A lot of people don’t. I find that it saves time. When you have a shaker or seaweed on you have to bring them both up anyway. If you winch it in with the downrigger it seems like less work and you can get it done faster.

Id recommend downloading the Fish Washington app. Rock fish retention is often open for certain species at various times through the summer and fall in marine areas 1-4 and I think sometimes 5. Rules change annually and emergency regulations pop up over night. So I just check the app before every trip.

You should try snap on weights. Look up spilt milt productions. He mainly does Kokanee fishing but also larger salmon species as well. I was using my down rigger on my yak but once I found out about the easy clip on weights and a chart that shows how far back for a particular weight I was hooked. Also I usually troll around 2.1-2.5 mph and I use dodgers and hoochies. Always hook up almost like shopping and not fishing! I subscribed though! We’re in the same ish area if you ever make it near whidbey I’d go out with ya! Lastly season is still open in zone 8-1 till the 13th. Near deception pass. I’ll be out that way till then. Tight lines !

@kayakfishingpnw 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing your tips! I definitely like the simplicity of attaching weights to the line. I tend to prefer rigs that don’t require me to set the hook. That’s the only reason I tend to favor downriggers and divers. When either unclips the rod lurches forward for me to set the hook. That’s just me though. Glad you have success with clip on weights!

I've run that lot in my 15' aluminum. But if you get in the way of a container ship or a barge it could be deadly. I don't understand why you don't fly a flag on a mast for visual. I've seen several collisions out there in the last 50 years.

It’s probably not obvious in the video, but my net extends about 4’ in the air and I put about 4 square feet of blaze orange duck tape on it for visibility. I also made a point of going with a bright orange kayak with a brightly colored life jacket. I also keep a really careful eye out for all boats-not just commercial traffic. I’m also definitely aware that doesn’t eliminate any risk.

I was trying to fish the sound a couple of weeks ago in my kayak but with the 4 lb downrigger out I had to pedal so hard and was barely able to keep the speed I needed to. Ended up using a dropper weight instead and that reduced the drag considerably. What are you doing differently to mitigate that?

A lot of factors go into it. Sounds like you were likely in a higher current area than I was. I have the fastest kayak Hobie makes (revo 13) and I upgraded to turbo fins. I also try to go with the current. I might go out an hour before high tide and troll one direction then reverse later.

Hi, this is Patrick, I am a subscriber and wanted to let you know I really like your videos. The one thing that can be challenging is hearing you properly, but not sure how that can be fixed with the wind noise. As a suggestion, throwing in maps once in a while may be helpful, as well as more detail on gear/lures used. I also had a question: What are the pants you are wearing when kayaking?
@kayakfishingpnw
@kayakfishingpnw 13 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. It is especially difficult with the wind noise. Some people use Bluetooth mics. I'll consider it. I'm a little wary about bringing more water-sensitive electronics aboard, but I will investigate. I've started providing the gear and bait I use in the description. I was assuming it would be sort of boring to hear in each video. Happy to start including it if it would be helpful. I was wearing a dry suit in this video. On hot days, I often wear hiking pants. They're made of fast-wicking UV-protective material. I get them at Costco for about $12.

Can you share how your fishing strategy changes when specifically targeting coho vs chinook?
@kayakfishingpnw
@kayakfishingpnw 15 күн бұрын
Coho: I go fast (3 mph+) and target depths between 40 and 70 feet often in 200+ foot water. I generally use hoochies to avoid shakers. Chinook: I go slow (1.5 to no more than 2.5 mph) and keep the bait 10-20 ft off bottom in depths of 80-140 feet. I generally use spoons because I don't catch as many shakers at depth. Hoochies work too. That said you will catch one using the other technique with some regularity. Small chinook are virtually unavoidable while coho fishing.
@wizzle89
@wizzle89 15 күн бұрын
so is there a way to control the depth with the dispy diver/deep 6? os does it just go where it wants to go, around 40ft?
@kayakfishingpnw
@kayakfishingpnw 15 күн бұрын
The best I've come up with is just putting out less line. E.g. use a 70' diver but only let out 50' of line to get it down to about 30-35'. They definitely will still bite on a 70' diver 35' down. It seems to add a lot of drag to do that though.

I’ve only caught one, so definitely not an expert but I’ve been told they don’t make it that far south in the sound. They’re more in the strait and ocean. Be very careful if you want to target them there. The weather is much rougher and it tends to be notably cooler. Lingcod are a good warm up fish and they are definitely in the sound. Glad I could help! To date I haven’t caught a shaker on a hoochie. That’s part of the reason I use them almost exclusively for coho. Brads cut plugs are ok at avoiding shakers but it happens. Here's a thought. In dry land deer hunting the season is much longer for "Bow hunters" because obviously there aren't as many bow hunters out there, it's a much more back to nature type of hunting, and it takes more effort and good fortune to bag a deer or elk, etc; with a bow. Has there ever been any effort by the fishing Kayak population to lobby for an extended salmon fishing season for human propulsion only kayak fishing? Hmmm.....
@kayakfishingpnw
@kayakfishingpnw Ай бұрын
I can’t tell you how many times I had the exact same thought. It’s pretty hard to catch salmon from a human powered vehicle on a single barbless hook. I also can’t imagine that we do material damage to the populations by keeping at most two fish in a day. It does seem like we should be afforded a longer season or exempt from certain emergency regulations. Our season is functionally shorter because we can’t go out in high winds or big waves.

One thing when landing lings: try not to pull the head out of water before it’s in the net. Sometimes they’ve clamped hard on the bait but they aren’t actually hooked. They’ll stay clamped on in the water, but they’ll usually let go if their head comes out. This happens more frequently with live bait like Greenling.
