I love how you give tips and facts in your fishing videos. I was unaware that brown bullheads were venomous. Good thing to know before my next cat fishing trip. That trip could have ended badly LOL.
@extremephillyfishing9 жыл бұрын
+Amplify Swift Thanks, Amplify Swift! The Bullhead genus - _Ameiurus_ - is usually venomous. It's not some kind of venom that will kill you. It's a type of venom that will delay blood coagulation and delay the healing process. In other words, when you get injured by a Bullhead, it's hard to stop the blood flow for the first couple minutes. Additionally, upon pressure, you will fell sharp pain at the site of the injury even if the outside is already healed. Tight lines!

dont see why you dislike bullheads. they are honestly a great fish to catch in my opinion. also. the hooks you are using for those bullhead are much too small. id suggest an octopus circle hook thats about a size or two bigger than the hook size you were just using. also leave a bit more of the tip exposed on the hook and it can help prevent guthooks. but really you need bigger hooks for bullhead than youd think.

+Drix I would not consider eating it because I am not a big fan of eating Catfish (my family does, however). Therefore, I would very likely keep them as bait, in case I came to the conclusion that they swallowed the hook so deep that they wouldn't make it. Tight lines, Drix!

You should set the hook right away because all of the fish are getting the chance to swallow the hook. When you cut the line the fish have a very slim chance of survival. Especially since they were all gut hooked. Or use circle hooks.
@melvinthefisherman9 жыл бұрын
bullheads are notorious hook swallowers. they can swallow the hook even if you set the hook instantly
@extremephillyfishing9 жыл бұрын
+SOCAL ANGLER 1 First of all, I would like to point out that I am glad that you are showing some concern for the safety of the fish in this video. It's always good to care about fishes; after all, there is no fishing without them! As for your comment...there are many reasons why I didn't use circle hooks for this fishing session or didn't set the hook "instantly." I could go on and on to talk about those reasons, but that would be too troublesome. Thus, let's just focus on the "fish swallowing the hook" aspect here. As a multi-species angler, I am mostly catch-and-release. I also practice what is called "Selective Harvest" (you may google it for its definition). In this video, I think I was pretty fast when it comes to setting the hook up! Evidence of my words lies in the fact that not every Bullhead in the video was _"gut hooked."_ For the ones that swallowed the hook, I had two alternatives for the fish: (1) I could cut the hook and release the fish IF my conclusion was that the fish bled just a bit. In other words, its survival rate is maximized. (2) I could have taken the fish home for bait IF my conclusion was that the fish bled a lot. In other words, its survival rate was minimized. As you can see, just because I have released all the fish in this video, that doesn't necessarily mean that I release gut hooked fishes all the time! I evaluate each case individually and THEN I take the smartest approach. Now comes the main question here: *What are their chances of survival after cutting the line and letting the hook stay in?!* You mentioned in your comment that _"when you cut the line the fish have a very slim chance of survival."_ Unfortunately, that statement is too general. Also, what primary sources do you have to back that up? And ultimately, what is the meaning of _"slim chance of survival"_ in your sentence? Statistically speaking, what does _"slim"_ mean? Those questions *must* be taken in consideration when talking about this topic. First of all...to make your statement less general, let's think of the following scenario: we have three different Species that swallowed the hook. One is a Rainbow Trout (_Oncorhynchus mykiss_). The second one is a Smallmouth Bass (_Micropterus salmoides_). The last one is our Brown Bullhead (_Ameiurus nebulosus_). We have to now take in consideration that these three different Species of fish have different sensitivities when it comes to "survival rates." A Trout is more sensitive than a Bass, and both the Trout and the Bass are more sensitive than a Catfish. If you want to know why, I advise you to google _Childress and Muoneke's_ 1994 research paper on fish mortality. But anyways...that means that under the same circumstances, a Trout is more apt to die than a Smallmouth Bass, and both are more apt to die than a Bullhead. The following is data that was extracted from different research papers, and I quote: _"A much higher percentage of fish that are hooked deeply survive when the hook is left in and the line cut compared to those where a deep hook is removed. In the few scientific studies where the fate of hooks that were left in fish released by anglers were tracked, it has been learned that hooks were eventually shed by the fish or surrounded by new tissue. One study found that rainbow trout shed hooks in about 40 days. The study of 200 hundred trout released without removal of hooks 66 percent survived, of the 200 where the hook was removed 11.5 percent survived.In a 1989 study of smallmouth bass, study mortality ranged between 32.5 and 47.3 percent (depending upon hook size) for hooks that were immediately removed, whereas mortality for hooks that were not removed was 4.2 percent. In the case of juvenile smallmouth bass, the study found that upon dissection, some hooks were lodged in internal organs but that new tissue surrounded the hooks. The study further noted that dissected hooks exhibited minimal corrosion after 20 days. If you are wise to cut the line and leave the hook in, the fish will likely survive to be caught another day."_ Considering the fact that in terms of sensitivity Brown Bullhead is the least sensitive, we have that the statistical percentage of this Species mortality rate *must be* less than 4.2% of the mortality ratio of the Smallmouth Bass. That is to say that if I released 100 Brown Bullhead with swallowed hooks, considering that they bled little and the hook wasn't forced out, *less than* 4 of them would die. Therefore, as you can see, you are underestimating fishes when you say that they have a _"very slim chance of survival."_ Once again -- it depends on how much they bled and which Species they are. For Brown Bullhead in this video, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Tight lines and fish on!

Bullheads were brought here for meat purposes but they escaped and now there is a law that you have to kill each bullhead you catch because they are dominating in waters they are released to and pretty much eating away most of fish so you can sometimes catch like 400 of these within few hours 3-15cm at best as they grow only to 30cm in europe
@extremephillyfishing9 жыл бұрын
+felaa94 I think you need to inform yourself better about Bullhead Catfish, felaa94. First, you need to tell me which Bullheads are you talking about. In other words, which Species are invasive? As far as Science goes, Brown Bullhead (_Ameiurus nebulosus_) and White Bullhead (_Ameiurus catus_) are both native in Pennsylvania, USA. You also failed to give me location -- some Species may be native to certain watersheds and completely invasive in other watersheds. The Brown Bullhead and White Bullhead may be native in PA, but be invasive somewhere else. An example of this is the Warmouth (_Lepomis gulosus_), which is a _"candidate"_ fish in PA but an invasive Species in NJ. Summarizing...your comment is too general and it certainly doesn't apply to every Species of Bullhead out there. Tight lines and fish on!
@felaa949 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry for not giving more information, i meant it in Poland and Ameiurus Nebulosus. it was brought here in 1885 and since then continue to spread in lakes and rivers. in some it i even dominate so hard that most of other fish are on brink of extinction
