A “fisher of men” is a violent, judgment-laden image in the Hebrew prophets, not a quaint play on words. When you are the “caught fish” in the Old Testament, life as you know it is now over; something very new is about to begin. What’s more, seas and waves are emblems of chaos and the Gentile world in the Old Testament. When, through Hebrew eyes, we read about Jesus calling his disciples to be fishers of men, this changes our perspective on their mission.
