Fishing new colour soft plastics for reef fish

Ahoy legends! In this weeks episode we throw back to Swains Reef where Whytey and I are the lucky fisho's that get to field test the new lure colours from the Zerek range. So new in fact they didn't even have names yet! But that's all good! We made up our own ahaha! Needless to say it didn't take long for the new range to start producing the goods! Used fish traps on my last trip to the Swains -= only had 3 and they worked great on the trout. Unfortunately lost them all to the reef, but enjoyed using them and will be using them all the time locally for snapper down around Newcastle.

I haven't used a zerek lure before but ide love to take a fishtrap out over the wide bay bar and try and catch my first legal pearly. Only ever managed pearlies of the smaller size

Craziest capture was actually very different fish on the same day with a zerek live shrimp 2 inch. Went out at dawn on Lake Purrumbete and caught a bag of Redfin with 2 over 40cm. Then drove to port Phillip bay in the afternoon and caught a handful of pinkie snapper and a nice 60cm flathead. Same rod, same leader, same lure. Didn’t even have to retie from fresh to the salt 😂🐟🤙🏼 great session. Great video Sammy and Nick 👍

Hey Sammy and thanks for the opportunity to win some top lures. Like a lot of fishermen in Sydney I'm land locked until the lock-down ends but I've no doubt that these lures would pull plenty of bottom biters on the reefs and gravel of Maroubra, Kurnell, Cronulla and Jibbon. Flatties, snapper, mulloway, mowong definitely a chance and wouldn't be surprised to snare some tailor, salmon and probably kings. As always another enjoyable video mate, thanks.

Another great video Sammy. My Zerek story happens at Copeton dam. While jigging a fish trap in some thick trees I hooked up to a respectable yellow belly. The fish was coming up and we saw it at about 1 meter under the surface. It was zigging and zagging wildly which is a bit unusual we thought. Suddenly we realised why. A giant cod of approximately 1.2 meters came up from the depths and devoured my yella. Needless to say, a 4kg stick, 2500 reel and 8 pound leader was no match. Result……..no fish, and no Zerek fish trap. I would use this prize pack at my own Swains reef trip next year (Covid permitting). I’ll definitely take the big “come here gear” when I go.

The zerek tango shads have been my go to lure to troll for flathead as they work a treat! My 8 year old son loves the bright colours!

Cheers for the content! Best way to finish a weekend! Haven’t had much luck on lures honestly but trying to work on perfecting or practicing I guess. The Zerek “live mullet” in the red with black top. The goal is a mangrove Jack or nice size flathead in the Logan system. It’s up there on the bucket list. Wouldn’t mind trying those shrimps for a flathead or Jew in the system as well.

G'Day Sammy, after many years away from boating and fishing I have just purchased myself a new SeaJay 483 Territory and have now had 4 trips in it. The last one was to Lake Monduran where my son and I went fishing for Barra. The local guide who runs the charters at Lake Monduran give me the heads up and suggested I purchase some Zerek Flat Shad's in the 7 inch size and to upgrade the hook size to a 10/0 which at the time seemed extreme. Lucky I took his advice because not only did I catch a Barra but I got my first ever "metery". It measured 101cm which is only just over the metre mark but hey I'll claim it. Thanks for your videos and for also sharing your knowledge, I really enjoy watching them.

Sammy, a few weeks ago i managed to catch a tagged bass in the clear island waters lake system on a zerek 65mm fish trap. It was previously caught in 2016, in hinze dam (37 km from where I caught it) at a length of 38.5cm. When I caught it it was 42cm. Overall it was a pretty sick capture, interesting to find out a little bit of info about the fish in the lake and it was my first tagged fish.

Being a land based fisher, can't wait to try a few of these plastics off the Stockton break wall and across the flats around the entrance to Lake Macquarie for some flatties. In my 70's now I have seen fishing come along in leaps and bounds from my first Rangoon Cane beach rod and a side cast to the Venom rods of today and lures from the fantastic Wonder Wobbler for almost every fish but especially Flatties. Wishing myself luck.

Hi Sammy You are currently keeping me sane while I watch all your videos while in the 236th day of lockdown in beautiful Melbourne.😡 I did manage to get away with the lovely wife between lockdowns in late April to the Kimberleys where we enjoyed a 2 week cruise from Wyndham to Broome. Managed to smuggle a travel rod and some lures into my 10kg luggage limit. Caught numerous Barra around the 60-80 cm range using zerek prawns and fish traps. Absolute dynamite. Cracker episode Sammy mate, am going to deffo get some of them lures in those colours. My craziest catch on a Zerek lure is when I was fishing on south wall Brunswick and I was using a zerek fish trap targeting mulloway but I wasn’t having much luck so I decided I would start watching your blackfish video where you went with your dad but halfway through the show I hooked something massive it started screaming off and may I add I was not ready for it but after a 50 minute fight I pulled in a 108cm mulloway and I was absolutely shell shocked at this fish ended up letting that beast go but it would be amazing to get one of those packs cheers Sammy lovely lot of trout you got there well done 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

Hey Sammy. Awesome lures mate. I use the 110 mm fish trap to fish the brissy river for threadfine and Jewish. Slow jigging around the pylons. Caught 3 fish in total my Pb 100cm Jewfish and also pb111 cm threadfin on the the same lure. The third fish was also a threading going 87cm. All in all great day on the water. Just for info my mate fishing with me was also using the fish traps but a different colour. They seemed to like mine better. Cheers mate. Keep up the good work. 👍

Love the fish trap in the 110cm for Mulloway on the estuary rivers along the South NSW coast - hard to beat for jigging the deep holes near bridge pylons in the classic ‘Qantas’ flying bear colour.

Hey Sammy I've only used the fish trap version in the zerek range so far caught a few flathead and the odd wrase, I'm hoping to get a couple of snapper or kingfish when the weather warms up. My craziest catch so far though is a 14lb Atlantic salmon on the white body red head with the black dot job lol. I’m a mad keen spearo, but always carry a fish trap rigged up in case the water is pea soup. WA dhufish love it! Had around a 9-10kg model up along side the boat and phone out ready to take photos, when the knot slipped and away went the fish. Safe to say I was “knot” happy🙃 Cant wait for the water to clear up this summer so I can head back to that spot and settle the score!

So I decided to give the fat Betty a go and wouldn't you know it, first cast up onto a shallow bank, two twitches and... BANG, onto a solid 65cm flatty! My mates face was priceless!!! I first saw the fish traps catching red after red on your channel sammy!!! I headed down to Freddy's and picked up a about 3 fish traps in every colour and size! I was using a blueish fish trap chasing some snapper at North reef off Newcastle, it got absolutely slammed about halfway to the bottom and nearly spooled me on the first run, fought that fish for over 40mins was nearly spooled twice but finally had a longtail beside the boat... 17kgs of longtail, not bad for my 20lb braid and live fibre custom xx7 baitcast rod and old abu 6500 reel 🤘

We use the Zerek FishTrap in Fat Betty colours here on the reefs around Wollongong. It’s been an absolute weapon of a lure. We have caught flathead, mowies , snapper, even kingies on them. The missus loves the fat Betty lure so much she even went to BCF and bought me a Fat Betty hat !!!

Hey Sammy First flick off Cleveland point when the zerek prawn came out switched out the hook to a quarter ounce jig head landed first cast 2 flicks of the tip and got smacked by a 42cm parrot fish let go to fight another day , first ever parrot landed ,land based was stoked 🤙🎣 also hopefully heading out to the swains next year onboard a 7.4 mate plate boat so need a few more lures to feed to the fish ha ha yewwwww 🎣🎣🎣🎣🤙

Me and the misses use the 95mm weedless fish traps the variety of fish you hook up to is unreal we use ours on the reef in the gutters and in the river and creeks they are our go to lure her favourite is the fab fat betty mines the FB Flying bear cheers 👍🎣

I have used the purple 95mm fish trap in the dams and find they work a treat on weed edges for yellow belly to flatties down the pin. Great lure for all applications.

Hi Sammy, I watched one of your episodes, where you caught heaps of Gr8 fish on the Zerek live prawns, like the Nemo!!. I bought some (3 of the black stripped realistic looking ones that you recommended as the lure of choice that day) and tossed them from Broome to Shark Bay, all the way down the West coast just recently, and did not get 1 touch!!! Mainly from shore, Tried in creeks for Mangrove Jack, Even deep dropped them like you do off Broome trying for a trout - nada!! Thought I'd be a chance for a Tuskie at Monkey Mia....nothing!!! Not giving up just yet, but was a tad disappointed not to at least snag a trev!! or a Spango... I intend to keep using them until I catch something!! :) I have a charter to the Abrolhous Islands book for May 2022, am keen to give em a try there, hope it is similar fishing to what you are getting on the GBR... My best Zerek capture was on the famous fat Betty fish trap. It was dusk on a pretty quite snapper session when my fish trap got tailed up by my first ever long tail tune. Definitely not one to forget.

Best and latest catch was that 4kg snubnose dart on 15lb gear with a Zerek jerkbait on Fraser Island early Sep-21 Sammy! Zerek are my go to lures those ones you guys just tested would be awesome for our Ken Reef trip we have planned next Oct-22 with Big Cat Charters.

Don't know about craziest capture mate, but gave the Zerek Tango Shads a troll down the pin (thanks Sammy!) first Lizard engulfed the whole thing sideways in its gob, running 6lb fluorocarbon and could not believe I got the big girl in! Released to swim another day too!

Just had it dangling over the edge of the boat as I was putting away some leader as we first got there. Got smashed by an 85cm Barra. Was the only Barra of our 10 day trip. Hi Sammy, if the Nemo glows in the dark, and you could get the orange actions to glow reddish, they would be mint for catching reef jacks. They are aggressive towards anything red, so a red glow would be super enticing for the big night time fish.

Was teaching the missus how to fish with a Fat Betty fish trap and she hooked up to a 69cm dusky on her first cast. Now she always goes straight for Fat Betty every time we fish. They truly are a great lure.

Haven't managed to land a fish yet on the live shrimp but have had a fair few lost to the toothy critters. Would love to get a few lures to hopefully turn that 0 into a more favorable number. Awesome video like always Sammy.

Craziest Zerek Lure moment would have to be earlier this year, I was up the estuary with my mates and it was pretty slow going. I had a 5inch Zerek Prawn on and made a cast out into the mangroves. Couple winds of the reel and big hookup. I was pulling hard but it wouldn’t come in until it all of a sudden bounced out of the mangrove but still had some weight behind it. It didn’t fight much into the boat and when we landed it it was strange. Long, brown, slimy. Got on Mr Google and he reckons it was a Rhizophora mangle or a common mangrove.

Use the fish trap regularly to target snapper, threadies and Jew in the brissy river. But my most memorable catch on a fish trap was a 45cm bream while chasing Barra at clear island waters… That nemo colour looks mint👌👌

Last Chrissy mate and I took the tinny out to a local island in close because the weather was average, Was using a live shrimp in the 5" jigging for trout and tuskies in 15 feet using light baitcast gear. Ended up hooking and landing a 93cm Golden Trevally. Made the trip all worth it.

Thanks for the watch, I’m sitting in Sydney on a wet weekend in lockdown dreaming of getting back to the Swains. I have another trip planned in 2023 with mates that we are saving for, hopefully the borders will be open by then! I caught a Purple Maori Cod back in April on the flying bear ( Qantas colours) then got sharked on the next cast. Only took one but will be loading up on them for next time
