In this kayak fishing vlog I meet up with my old mate Jon for a day afloat outside West Bay harbour, on a rare October flat sea, for some fishing in Dorset. My hope is to catch a bass big enough to take home and eat but I forget my tape measure and find myself asking how big do sea bass have to be to keep!? Okay, I didn't actually use those words (KZbin made me use them). In the UK they're just called bass...unless you buy them from supermarkets. But if you found this video, you probably searched 'do i have to put my bass back in the sea' - current laws (2021) are that two bass can be taken per fisherman, per day and they have to be over 42cm long and caught between 1st March to 30th November.
Anyway...I’m keen to continue my recent successes of lure fishing for bass over rocky ground, but after a couple of lost rigs, Jon suggests finding cleaner ground to try and find some plaice. I head to the shore but on the way there Jon has a frantic hour of catching a wide range of fish species further out. I get a bit bored catching nothing close in so do a kayak rod holder review. I call Jon and hear he has ha big a blast! The fish seem to hanging back in the deeper, clearer water, so I join him…and go past him 😂🤣. Once the tide starts running, I focus on what I came for - an end of year celebratory bass for dinner. A lot of controversy seems to hang over the ethics of catching bass to eat. Most anglers couldn't even tell you what is the minimum size limit for bass and I found myself wrestling with my conscience. When you taste fish like this, it makes you wonder how fresh is supermarket fish?

Thanks Simon. Some people will no doubt find the attempts of humour unfunny or tedious but I have to amuse myself somehow - especially when the fish aren’t biting. 😅

Bril, Charles, very entertaining and informative. Very nice bass at the end and terrific range of species. I've got a pair of your recommended rod holders, but they're a bit worn and sometimes painful to use, not sure if it's possible to get replacements! Take care of yours 🤣

Nice video. Glad you caught something to eat. I love a Gurnard so great to see the footage of your's & Jon's. It looked lovely when I walked at Cogden yesterday. Sadly, I've no kayak here in Bridport until Friday evening when the new one arrives.

Thanks Patrick. The kids loved it for dinner tonight, which is great news as they had gone off fish since my undercooked mackerel! Fed all three of us. For some reason I thought you were already in Scotland!? Must be painful waiting for a yak while the weather is like this!?

@@Fishwish I'm pleased you didn't have to eat it all by yourself. I only dashed up to Scotland for 3 nights to take kayaks, garden furniture etc as well as meet my new boss. I drive to stay on 29th. No kayak is painful, you're right.

😂 thanks. They never took off unfortunately. Shouldn’t worry though as they’re pretty useless in winter.
