@@fishingmad be careful there. Seriously well engineered reels, like the smaller size D.A.M. Quicks, are bringing much higher prices than they did, when new, in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Beyond that, newish "cheapies" seem to exceed their fair service life so easily and you don't get to check them out beforehand. Maybe a trip to Cash Converters could be a useful exercise.

hey mate, i’ve been bass fishing for a few months but recently i’ve been getting into more saltwater fishing and your videos have greatly helped me. i caught my first flathead 2 days ago, measuring in at 64cm, i know it’s crazy lucky for my first flatty to be that big but anyway i am stoked. i also caught my first few whiting after watching some of your whiting fishing videos, keep doing what you’re doing. thanks Alan.

Hadn't considered the fishing permit. Not sure that should be part of the $65 budget, especially in the USA since different licenses are required for fresh and salt water. $55 is going to be tough to get anything that's will last more than a season in salt water but fresh water it's possible.

Hi Alan, Any tips on how to sense the bite on flatty and when to 'strike' and how? Thanks
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 10 ай бұрын
Flatties can be a sluggish fish, you don't want to rush the strike. You need to resist the urge to strike with those subtle nibbles and wait until you feel some weight. Flathead engage plastics really well so you wont drop to many. All comes down to practice but they are an awesome fish to target with plastics

Great helpful vid, I bought a Kmart rod yesterday but yours looks better! I was just wondering when is best to use swivels, for bigger lures maybe?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 11 ай бұрын
I only use swivels when bait fish, or when fishing offshore with lure clips for big fish. When using plastics I wont use a swivel as it adds weight and changes the swimming action of the plastic and if your not careful can ruin your guides. I will always use a FG knot or double uni

Great project there, just illustrating that you don't have to always spend big buck to go fishing. Something I saw several times was the "memory" of the monofiliment bundled in with the reel/rod combo. When you cast, you could see the spiral loops of line that would hinder casting by causing flogging in the runners, something you don't see with braid. Is it worthwhile to use some of that footage in discussing fishing lines at some convenient point? ps. I'm 69YO, about to set sail alone for home (Australia), from Panama. How does the "older than 70YO" work regarding licence exemption in Victoria? Does your 70th birthday + 1 day qualify you or does it mean 71YO?

@fishingmad
@fishingmad 11 ай бұрын
I'm glad it inspired you !! Lorimar was fishing really well about a month ago, but as the water temp increases the bigger fish have gone to deeper waters. When things are going slow I will generally add some scent like s-factor, work the plastic slowly, and try fishing peak times such as tide changes and on mornings and evenings. I hope that helps

When doing a "beginners" fishing video, could you please talk about then "when, where, and how" of fishing. For example, if fishing in a lake: - when is the best times of the day to fish (and why); - what should you look out for when deciding where on the lake to fish (shade, structures, current, wind, movement on the water, etc.); - what weather conditions are best for fishing (hot sunny days vs. cold & rainy days vs. mild overcast days vs. other conditions); - how should you change how you fish (different rigging, lures/baits, etc.) depending on conditions, time of day, characteristics of the lake; - anything else of similar relevance. This could also be done for fishing on rivers/creeks, fishing in bays/inlets/estuaries, fishing in salt water. Complete newbies (like myself & my daughter) have no idea about this stuff - but I know it can make a HUGE difference. Thank you for your excellent videos.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate the comment and feedback. I have another beginners video on our channel which shows a lot more about technique you can see that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/imPdomp9rdKhnaM in terms of times, tides, conditions its really challenging to piece that in a video as every location and system is different. When we do our usual videos covering a location we will generally talk about the best gear, times to fish, techniques etc specific to that location. Eg Lakes are non tidal, some species fish best on sunrise/sunset some during the middle of the day when the water temp is at its warmest. We also have a members area which has very detailed and lengthy workshops for beginners on the gear to use, how to use them, how to target specific species, fish certain locations so a lot more detail on the when, what and how stuff. That might be worth looking into. Thanks
