Dude! Black/clear ice is stronger than cloudy ice. Please do not spread misinformation about ice fishing. No ice no matter what color is gonna be safe under 2 inches. But 4" of cloudy ice is a lot more dangerous than 4" of black clear ice.

OK, Mike! As a "General Rule" Ice that cracks is safe, Ice that bows will break! That rule is only for walking on it and NOT bouncing up and down on it. Also, you should have KEPT your ice picks around your neck the WHOLE time you were on the ice, and you should have sat in the sled while you were fishing to dissipate your weight. Not harping on you dude, just teaching and would sure hate to see something happen to you! Take care!

that noise is just the ice settling we walk on the lake in our woods all the time as it's easier than walking through the mountains. One thing to note is to avoid the areas where the ice meets any land or thing erected from the water as these areas are weaker. Happy fishing!

Just a future tip, you probably didn't know this but do not let the blades of a hand auger or any auger hit dirt. Dirt can dull the blades and the blades need to be really sharp to cut the ice you can ruin the blades so may need to replace them. It can hit ice and snow but don't test depths, hope this saves you some money in the future.

Clear ice is usually safer because it is pure ice, cloudy ice has been disturbed. Of course on that little pond it may seem that way, but on larger bodies of water stick to the thicker clear ice.
