Dino Harrison They are likely using circle octopus hooks with the live bait, so to "set" the hook you simply pull steady and firmly on the line. Yank the line like you're setting the hook on a jig and you'll likely hurt the fish.

Mike when you're ice fishing you typically want to keep your hands out of the water when pulling the line in, if it's in the teens everything will freeze to each other (your hands to the line and whatnot). It just keeps your body safer and your setups working properly. Also, if you fish more finicky fish like lake trout let the reel spin for like 10-20 seconds then gently pull the tipup out and set the line. It's a lot more effective than pulling line off the reel and setting it on when feeling a tug.

4" using a gas auger!! Funny. Around here I'm on the ice end of November. Use a ice spear or light axe. (No gas smell) Also it's hard to start because it has a choke "zen master". Predator rig or sucker harness on a fresh herring (tip up). Or double smelts. Love your vids man. Free place to stay if you come for the big ones up north. 42" PB pike. Many bigger around here.
