We join Mountain West Muskie Chapter 65 at Pineview Reservoir to chase the elusive Tiger Muskie. Watch as these muskie maniacs catch and release the beasts in less then a minute. We show you the gear and knowledge you need to try your hand at fishing for Tiger Muskie yourself.
Plus, how the DWR is saving native cutthroat trout from southern Utah's wildfires.

Do you think the musky are going back and telling alien abduction stories? The other fish are “gtfo Craig. You had too many bud lights.” Then he flips over and shows the missing fin. The other ski just lose their fish minds.

I thought you might enjoy the Tiger Muskie show we shot in 2000. It never got to air due to 9/11. We caught 5 Tigers and Tom Pettengill DWR Fisheries Mgr caught his first ever!

Great vid but 8:26 looked unnecessary, that would certainly have hurt the fish, just didn't sit right with me

Caught an estimated 46 inch Tiger Muskie at Pineview last Thursday. It's my first Muskie. Caught it on a lipless crankbait and 15 lb Flourocarbon. I was fishing for bass!

Tiger Muskie are a sterile fish hybrid between a Northern Pike and a Muskelunge, producing a Tiger Muskie.

8:20 Could someone fill me in on why they remove such a large chunk of the pelvic fin? I'm guessing it's for a flesh/DNA sample, but why cut off what looks like a main portion of the fin? I've seen scientists remove fin material from the less meaty trailing edge of fish fins, but never the thicker leading edge. Does it grow back by chance? Thanks, just curious and trying to understand.

RoboTekno pretty sure it’s another way to track the fish, same thing as a fin clip in a hatchery

To answer your questions: 1. The more material there is, the better the sample and quantity of testable material they get. 2. Because they are idiots that don't know how to properly sample a fish's fin is why they cut right there. 3. No it won't grow back and yes it does affect the fish's ability to swim. probably not much, but even if it has to move it's fins 2 more times a minute to stay in position, it still affects them.

Why cut off the one fin? I love fishing here in Utah, and haven't yet gone to pineview.

Cutting the fin when the fish is already tagged, that´s nonsense. And why such a big chunk. The sound from the cutting is giving me a bad feeling.

Why fin clipping? Traditionally it is practiced at hatcheries so people know a stocked fish vs a wild. but tigers are all stocked. saltwater fins can be clipped to get a dna sample and figure out where the fish are from and their migratory patterns. but tigers are isolated to pineview.

@1:50 looks a hell of a lot like snagging. Don't condone that kind of behavior. @3:26 you can see, that hook is set in the chin NOT the mouth. A common result of snagging. And don't tell me it's to get the bait deeper down. BS

So every single fish you have hooked was perfectly in the mouth? Yeah sure clown.

The bait is called a "jerk bait". You twitch the rod to get the bait to move around in the water, it's how they're designed. The water clarity at this reservoir isn't good enough to be able to see the fish and actively try to snag them. Also big baits with treble hooks, it's much better for the fish to be hooked on the edges of the mouth that in the throat. That's why baits like this are designed with 3 hooks, less likely for the fish to swallow it and get the hooks in their gills. If the fish swallows an 8 inch bait with 3 hooks, hell even 1 hook, it will die. 9/10 times a fish hooked in the gills or the throat will die.
