My 1st time fishing the River Roding, I managed to find a nice secluded little swim and caught my 1st London Minnow. Great fun after work.

Brilliant video that's my old river I grew up fishing that stretch that's one of my old swims the river there is still tidal looked like you was fishing it on the flood my experience of the river is to fish it on the ebb the bigger fish come back from following the tide further upstream If it still fishes like it use to 20yrs ago you will fall in love with the old girl just like I did 👍

Thanks Shaun, I'm not sure if it's tidal anymore, there is lock and weir at Barking near the small area that some house boats Moor. I haven't got round to fishing below the lock 😀

@@TheBudgetAngler thanks for the reply It's still tidal there it stops being tidal believe it or not about 300 yds upstream of where you was fishing it only goes beyond that on a spring tide It was renowned for flooding in the winter yrs ago that's what the barrier at barking is for I always fished on the opposite bank I've caught everything out of that river over the yrs excluding a Barbel

They were some proper specimen Minnow, you should bring some small scales that people often use to weigh bags of “herbs” and get a weight on them 👍👍

Hi Andy. I am hoping you can help me out here. Since lockdown, I have taken an interest in freshwater fishing (I have done sea fishing on and off for years). So with this in mind, I have bought a rod license from the EA. I live in Barking and wanted to try the River Roding stretch. Since doing some research, I found that regardless of having a rod license, there’s still areas I need permission to fish. Can you tell me if you know anything on permission required for the Roding stretch near me (or maybe further afield). I have also found the same for canals, which again, you need to liaise with the Canal and River Trust before you go ahead and fish. I think this is what put me off freshwater fishing in the first place. I can understand the need for permission and rules but I think I have found it misleading in the sense of buying a rod license but still finding out you potentially need to buy a day ticket or be a member of a club before you can fish in most rivers and canals in the UK. Any advice would be much appreciated and if preferred.

Hi Mark, thanks for your comments, technically there is no such thing as "free" in freshwater fishing. All fresh water has fishing rights that are owned by someone. This link on the CRT website is helpful: canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/fishing/places-to-fish/where-can-i-fish-for-free As far as I know no one actively managed the roding around Barking out to Buckhurst hill so you can probably fish it without worrying. I know further out it is managed by a club I think it's Debden fishing club. Personally I do some research online, maybe ask some questions on Facebook groups then go and have a look myself. As for canals they are nearly all managed by the CrT some pleces they lease the fishing rights to a club other places you need a wanderers permit.

This river is full of lovely fish I’ve had chub to 5lb + barbel to 8lb carp to 13 pike to just below 10

@@Lordo They were stocked years back by the EA in the upper reaches. Not too sure how well they did from there, probably a rare find. I used to fish it massively around Woodford and Buckhurst Hill. So I can add golden orfe, tench and bream to the "odd" caught species list. I've also seen brown trout (they were stocked and soon vanished) and a couple of koi carp who were no doubt escapees from a back garden flood. Main target for me was the chub although you could have some good roach fishing in the right spots. I never targetted the perch although there were some good ones caught - I was too scared of hitting a pike!

Enter Wanstead Park from Wanstead Park Road. When you get to the bridge before The Ornamentals try fishing the river there. I reckon access is better. Even though it was many years ago that I fished there, chub to 3lb were not uncommon.

Cool Andy I am one of the upper Roding anglers fishing near Ongar. Great excitement over a minnow! I have not caught a Roding Gudgeon for at least 5 years. About 6 weeks ago I raked out a fish I could not identify and put it on traditional Fisherman River Roding forum and there were guess suggestions so you never know what you can catch from the Roding Good luck

Start a grounbaiting campaign - there's bound to be carp in there (there are towards Barking) - stick a loaf of liquidized bread out there every few days for a week or two and they'll show up when you're there.

The Carp ain't there any more they only spawn in Barking I had a lovely 20 this year after kicking romainians out my spot they ain't there anymore would you stick around in Barking with all the foreighn filth I pre bait when ever it's hot and only seen silvers I live 2 mins from it and look everyday so honest opinion waste of time plus it's tidal bread won't last two seconds
