The main point about the reel is the 4:3 to 1, keeps you from cranking to fast geared up on coffee or like thinking you need 7:5 to 1 and still cranking like this young guy in the video, with the right glass rod and spinner bait slow rolling the bottom, it's a master piece and only thing Lew's is really known for, going below 5:3 to 1 for slow cranking in cold water.

A Black Bass reel that must be fished to be appreciated, When David Fritts heard it was discoed. He bought 30 of them. I just connected with 3 new ones ❤

My Dad just gave me one of these Lew's Speed Spools BB-1NG combos that he got from his Dad after he passed away in 1990. My Grandpa had several of them. I remember when he got his first Lew's reel in the early '80s. I remember it was expensive. I bought a Shimano casting reel back then because Lew's was out of my price range. It's nice to see a young guy using one of them who also got his from his Grandpa.

David Fritz made that reel famous for crank bait fishing about 20 years ago. Paired it with the all fiberglass Lew’s Crank’n Stick. Big heavy setup for men only. Love it

The original Lews BB1 Speed Spool was made by Shimano. The BB1N was made by Ryobi

That's a great reel. I ended up with two of them after my grandfather passed away. The classics never go bad if you keep them clean and oiled.

I'm currently using Ambassadeurs and a BB-1 Speed Spool I've owned since the late 70's. Keep 'em clean and lubed, they'll last a life time. I'm also using vintage 70's casting rods. Love the old stuff.

Best ever. That’s a second gen. Probably right on the 1980. I have the earlier one, the BB1 made between 73 and 77. The narrow spool makes these things cast a mile with none of the new tech. Before Lew brought these out, everything was the old big uncomfortable round thing. It was the first to contour the shape and left side plate for comfort, first one to have the level wind disengage for the cast, and a host of other things. When Lew died in a plane crash in 77, shimano stopped making them and offered their own first bantam reels in 78, stealing many of the ideas and innovations of course. Ryobi took over making the speed spools. These are the beginning of the BB1N

Wow this makes me feel old (at 46 lol). I have a Browning Lews BB1N that I bought new back in my early 20s in the mid 90s. David Fritts made those famous as crankin reels, 4.3 gear ratio is like maybe 19 inches per turn and just perfect for medium to deep diving crankbaits. I ended up with two more off ebay from back like 12 years ago or so....still use them today. Great video man!!

Great Job. My dad just gave me one of those that he found at a garage sale for two dollars! Anyway I fixed it up with new string at all and will try it out tomorrow. I looked up the price of the new models like that and they are around $160! 😁😁😁😁 i’m not very good at throwing bait caster so hopefully I will do OK and learn.Thanks again for the video and I will subscribe👍

The first ever Lew's Speed Spool model was my fist ever baitcasting reel. It was awesome for it's time and still a good reel compared to what's available today. Sadly, mine was stolen and I've never replaced it. This video makes me want to hunt one down to keep in my collection. These were made to Lew's specifications by Shimano Japan. They were technically the first fishing reels Shimano ever made. A lot of this design was used in Shimano's first baitcasters that carried the Shimano name. I do have a mint copy of the very first Shimano branded baitcast reel ever made. It was a tiny but very well made Bantam 100. It has the exact same brake system as the Lew's reel. You have to remove the spool to change break weights. Things have really evolved on these reels since then.

I belive thats a lews bb1ng they were made for many years from the early 70s to mid 90s but there kind of difficult to date because they looked the same for 20 years there were a few special modles I also belive it was the first lews reel to have the name speed spool. The values are all over the 0lace on them some on eBay for 90 bucks some on eBay for 400

@@LoganAndersonFishing all those old Lews reels are great. I have several including a saltwater model. Most are paired with vintage Lews Laser Speed Sticks. I also have several Lews Speed Spins also paired with Tennessee handle Speed Sticks. Classic high quality fishing equipment.
@peghead3 жыл бұрын
The Lew's Speed Spool BB-1 was very similar to the Ambassadeurs internally with the exception of the level wind. The Ambassadeurs drove the level wind from the left side of the reel while the Speed Spool drove it from the right side which made it possible to disengage the level wind while the reel was in freespool.
