Fishing With The DAIWA PROCYON Ultralight Rod!

Another day, another ultralight rod! I have actually had this Daiwa Procyon since late last year but just now got around to doing a video with it. This rod is definitely a cool one, and I must say, it is probably one of the most unique ultralight rods I have used yet.
The Daiwa Procyon is probably the fastest action rod I have found yet. I would actually consider this 6'1 UL Fast more of a Light Extra Fast personally. Either way, it is a fun stick to fish with, especially for jig anglers. I don't think I would ever throw a treble-hooked bait on this particular rod though - I just think it is too stout to handle those properly. Same thing goes for trout fishing - probably just too fast of a rod for that type of fishing.

Not only did I get some nice bonus bass on this trip, I even managed to hook and land a Carp. The funny part is the fact that the Carp inhaled my Donkey Tail after I skipped it under a tree. Not sure why, but I will take it!

Loved this video for several reasons, including ultralight multi-species, but the carp brought back some memories of a month ago when I was finesse tubing on my light rod for largemouth and hooked a carp. First time ever for me. I was like “oh, no…” I’m not kidding - took me almost 10 minutes to land it. Very fun, though!

I just got a Goture UL casting rod that's extremely similar to that rod. Mine is an 8'6" though, casting (obviously), but it has the same crazy fast tip, and the orange wrapping on the last few guides. Also the very thin rod tip. I paid a lot less for this rod though, $40 off Amazon. I immediately ordered it even though it was new and had no reviews (I own a couple tenkara rods from the brand already). It's been a very good rod so far. Crazy fun to use, definitely an UL, but like an extra extra fast tip.

Yeah that Procyon seems a bit stiffer if a rod but I think it would be a good middle ground rod. I prefer a UL that gets a little more bend but that isn’t necessary a bad thing. This is not a brand-specific question. For ultralight spinning fishing, if you can splurge on just a high-end reel OR a high end rod (NOT BOTH) which one gets the bigger investment? Does your answer change if we aren't addressing ultralight spinning gear but are instead considering a standard finesse 7' medium power spinning rod and a 3000 size spinning reel? Do you go high-end with the finesse spinning reel OR the finesse rod? Final wrinkle, if we put aside spinning gear altogether and consider a standard power fishing bass BAITCASTER (7-foot medium heavy power fast action baitcaster rod) with a baitcaster reel do you go high-end on the reel OR the rod? Ethan your fans ARE DYING TO KNOW! (Or at least I'm dying to know.)
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
1) I am pretty even on spinning reels vs rods. I would rather spend equal on both and get mid-range. 2) Same as answer 1. 3) I would go fancier on the casting reel. I think spinning reels are a lot more consistent across price ranges whereas casting reels have a steeper curve of performance based on the amount you spend.

As Micah said, St Croix as well as Temple Fork are both "fast" but they have a more tapered experience. Very versatile rods for that reason. Work well for jig fishing but you can still use trebled baits. Otherwise, if you want something cheaper, I would get one of the Okuma Celilo rods. Inexpensive and definitely has a more Moderate feel. The longer the rod, the more noodly they get. Stick to the shorter ones if possible.

Does being extra fast add to its sensitivity? What’s the most sensitive ultra light you’ve used to date? The dobyns?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
So this and the Dobyns both have a solid tip which is what makes them so fast. This rod is definitely extreme though - seems to have very little flex down the backbone on a typical ultralight fish (let alone that carp). The solid tip does add to sensitivity but this rod isn't that different than most $80-100 rods in my opinion. The Dobyns would be the most sensitive rod I personally own, whereas the St Croix Legend Elite is definitely the most sensitive I have ever used. Generally speaking, the more expensive rods use higher grade blanks and components which leads to better sensitivity.

Yes and no. It doesn't load up on smaller baits so it actually casts shorter than a lot of my ultralights. That is why I always search for a truly fast rod that isn't whippy, however I want it to have a little load-up to it on a 1/32oz jig. This rod is just a little too stout for true UL gear. Great for the slightly larger UL presentations though.
