With all the different sizes of split shot available, newer anglers may be confused about exactly which sizes they really need to carry and how that relates to the amount of split shot needed to correctly shot a float.
Float shotting capacities marked on the side of floats are also expressed in a variety of styles like Grams, Swan Shot, 4 x 14 and so on. This can lead to confusion for newbies, especially when they are abbreviated to names like Dust Shot, Swan Shot or simply numbers. In addition to that, there are also the other types of shot like Stotz and Styls to contend with.
This video will hopefully clear up any confusion and enable those anglers to understand all the technical terms and jargon surrounding the subject.

Good video Den, I wished I'd seen something similar 50 or 60 years ago. The only way I deal with dust these days is via the Hoover; hands, eyes and age conspire against their use on my line - in fact most, if not all, of my rigs are tied before I leave home because juggling shot by the water doesn't work for me. Thanks again

That was really helpful- thanks Den. This will save me “winging it” on the bank, as per usual, this weekend.

Great minds think alike Den, I printed off a sheet like yours some years ago then laminated it and stuck it on the inside of one of my pole float boxes. All the best to you and keep those videos coming.

I’ve got a shot chart saved on my phone from Google images and refer to that, but you know what? .. I never noticed that each shot was half the weight of the proceeding shot … doh! So this opened my eyes, thanks Den 👍

With being long in the tooth, and in the uk,I remember the shot sizes were actually shotgun pellet sizes. I think the confusion is deliberate by the manufacturers so that you will by a range of shots to cover you at the bank.My fingers are like pork sausages these days,so I mainly fish the ledgering method.

Thanks for doing this video, shot weights have been bothering me since I got back into fishing after a 40 year break! FYI (6:19) Lighter objects fall at the same rate (acceleration) as heavier objects (assuming the water resistance remains the same for each object...which for #6 and #8 shot should be very close). So, the lighter weight would only affect the buoyancy of the hook & bait, meaning it falls slower? If the hook and bait are not buoyant, the weight should not make any difference? This has always confused me...I'd like to see a movie of shot patterns falling through water to see what actually happens! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your comments. I would be interested in seeing a video of rigs falling through the water too. It's something I have been pondering upon for a while, but I haven't come up with a way to do the video in controlled conditions in very clear water.

@@FishingwithDen In a swimming pool? Set up a GoPro in one spot, cast the rig in the same way every time. White card behind the line & shot? Use dark line? Fluorescent hook/bait? Good underwater lighting (difficult!). A synchronized camera on the surface too - watch as the float cocks!

Cheers Den. I've fished for many years but still end up guessing weights on occasion. Mostly pole rigs that I set up at home but still annoying.

I have 3d printed a number of floats of different guises mainly waggler with the odd tweak in them. I tend to shot mostly bb and still try to use very small to dust in the bottom (tend to lose most in the grass around me) I will copy the chart as a handy Goto in my box. Great vid once more.
