I bet this channel hits 100k subs by next summer. Fishing is more informationally and financially accessible than ever before, and channels like this are critical to sharing and teaching the sport. I casually fished growing up, but folks like yourself have really helped me understand and apply bits of knowledge that always eluded me- now I actually catch fish (and good ones at that)!!😂 And in turn I've been able to share that with others who want to learn. Keep up the momentum, you've got a really good thing going on here!

Love your channel! Thank you for not doing click baits and being straight to the point! What lures would you recommend for fishing from the shore on Lake Michigan near Chicago?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
I used to fish from piers on Lake Michigan a lot many years ago, but now do it mostly from kayaks. I had good luck for trout and salmon with casting spoons and deep diving crankbaits. I have seen a lot of people jig spoons vertically off of the piers with good luck for salmon too. Lake Michigan harbors have a lot of big perch and pike too...cranks and spoons work for pike and I like to use small jigs and soft swimbaits for the perch, or live minnows near the bottom.

3:18 -- Video idea: Which boots for fishing? I mostly fish offshore from Southern California and also from shore in Anchorage, Alaska. My Alaskan friends said buy XtraTuff brand boots. Unfortunately I've been very disappointed by XtraTuff's performance across three different pairs over just four years. Do you have suggestions for fishing footwear? Doesn't have to be boots either.

I am a big fan of neoprene boots and waders for their comfort and stretchability. For summertime, I wade into streams and lakes with simple water shoes. They are mostly mesh but with tough soles for walking over rocks, sticks, and other debris. I like the thin Simms waders for summertime if I want to keep my clothes dry (instead of using water shoes).

Thoughts on windy conditions? Having trouble now that the wind has picked up for the season.
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
Someone else asked me the same question earlier today. Here's my thoughts: Wind/waves produce a lot of vibration in the water, so you may have to throw a noisier lure to get the fish's attention. It's harder to throw finesse baits in wind and waves too since you can't watch your line movement for indications of a bite. Heavier, faster, noisier baits tend to be better in those conditions. Good luck!

Is there anywhere online you’d recommend sourcing lures and other gear? Where I live we only have Walmart and Academy. Both are stocked fairly well, but just yesterday I couldn’t find a single spinner bait with a gold spinner.

Northern lakes are cooling off quite a bit but southern lakes will still be pretty warm, so that will impact lure choice a bit. Dropshot rigs, soft jerkbaits, hard jerkbaits, jigs, and small, slow creature baits are good in general during this time of year. Single colorado-blade spinnerbaits are good too. Colorado blades give more lift at a slower speed, so you can run the baits slower.

Just starting out fishing with a buddy of mine and your videos have been a great resource! Looking into getting my first rod and was curious on your thoughts on a medium heavy fast action rod (i.e googan go-to spinning rod, st. Croix triumph/bass x, shimano slx, etc)? I’ve seen that you recommend medium light/medium but was curious on your thoughts on medium heavy and if it’s much different than medium
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
I think any of those would be good. My favorite medium-heavy are my two Ugly Stik Carbons and they are probably less than half the cost of any of those. They are awesome for jigs, texas rigs, and frogs. Depending on the brand, a medium can be quite a bit lighter than a medium-heavy.
@hiphip808
@hiphip808 8 ай бұрын
@@FishingwithNat will check those out as well, thanks for the reply! Since you recommended those MH, which do you like/favor in medium (mainly looking at spinning rods for now)?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
@@hiphip808 I have a bunch of mediums (St Croix Triumph, Ugly Stik Carbon, Fenwick HMG, Pflueger President, Diawa Revros). The St Croix feels more like a MH but it's nice for topwater frogs. The Carbon and the HMG are probably tied for me. I troll for salmon with them on Lake Michigan, bottom-fish for carp and channel cats with them, and just about everything else. They are strong but lightweight and are very comfortable to use all day long.

The confusion I have at the moment is what sortof rig to use, whether Carolina rig or texas rig ect. with a lure. I have several of each type of lure, spinners, soft scented lures, hard lures.
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 23 күн бұрын
A Texas rig or Carolina rig is used with soft plastic baits like worms and creature baits. A spinner or other hard lure is just tied directly to the line or leader, or you could use a snap/snap swivel between the line and the lure.

Do you have any advice on what types of lures to use for windy/cloudy/sunny/rainy days? Does it really matter with the weather in combination with water temps or water clarity?
@FishingwithNat

Wind/waves produce a lot of vibration in the water, so you may have to throw a noisier lure to get the fish's attention. It's harder to throw finesse baits in wind and waves too since you can't watch your line movement for indications of a bite. Heavier, faster, noisier baits tend to be better in those conditions. If you're using something with a spinnerblade, silver or colored blades often work best on sunny days. Gold blades are good on cloudy days.

@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
Live bait like small fish or shrimp works well, plastic swimbaits (4-6"), or some people have good luck with topwater baits. They will gather near artificial lights at night to feed on schools of baitfish so that can be a productive time to get into a bunch of snook.
