The best way to prevent over feeding a single tank when you enjoy watching the shrimp eat, is to have multiple shrimp tanks and feed them at different times of day. There is always a tank that can be fed when you want to watch the little guys run around and eat.

I have taken to writing the date on my tank with a wet erase paint marker when I clean the sponge filters, that way the last date is staring me in the face and I know when I really should clean them again.

great video! shrimp mania is such a great channel. I love your comment about experience and credentials, it's like that for any hobby, I find, anyone and everyone can make a video, make a post make a comment or troll, but that's the internet for you. I have the same bad habit, i over feed my shrimp, so i wrote a sticky note on my shrimp rack saying only feed on wed and sundays. I love the comment you wrote about water changes/stability and testing the water to see if it needs a change. that's such a much better approach! until next video!

I found baby shrimp recently but I’m worried that they’re getting picked off by the fish in the tank (Green neon tetra and Chili Rasbora) and I would appreciate some tips for increasing the survival rate (I’m in the process of obtaining Java moss) and I’m also considering getting a hatchery breeder net that sits inside the tank with a 1mm grid size, don’t know if the babies can fit through it or if it’ll just not work out.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, ANY fish will eat baby shrimp given the chance. Java moss will certainly help as will large piles of rocks. At the end of the day, when you keep fish and shrimp together, it is a numbers game. Over time, providing you breed more shrimp than the fish eat, the colony will grow. This is essentially what happens in the wild.

What about water parameters that we don’t or can’t measure and their impact on the shrimp? Might it be helpful to change water regularly to correct for these unmeasured parameters( perhaps hormone levels as one example)?
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers 5 ай бұрын
Possibly right, but then we are weighing up things we don’t know and don’t/can’t measure versus real world experience of shrimp keepers on platforms like KZbin who are literally saying ‘I stopped doing water changes and my shrimp colony improved!’ At the end of the day I genuinely believe, if it is working for you, stick with it. 🫶🏻

i admit that i wash my intake sponges on my hob filters with tap water. yes, it kills the biofilter function, but i've got *so many* nooks and crannies and plants and the internals of the filter to all support the beneficial bacteria cultures i'm not too worried about it. but if that's someone's primary biofiltration they definitely shouldn't do that.

@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Жыл бұрын
Hi. When you have a large colony, you will always get the occasional death. The more shrimp in a given tank, the less calcium is available per individual in that tank. If I lost one shrimp a week out of 300, I would not worry at all. That’s a die off rate of 0.3%. I reckon you are doing pretty well 👍🏻

Would a dwarf cori be a good compromise in tanks big enough? They don’t bother shrimp, wouldn’t really contribute much to the bio load, and they’d make quick work of the worms. If the shrimp are spawning in the moss, would that keep the fry out of reach of the cori? (I know you don’t have them now, but I’m also asking for myself as I’m planning my shrimp tank lol)

Please follow the channel's advice but don't get just one, or even 2 Corydoras. They're all fish that need to be kept in groups. The more the merrier and you can have a group of 6 pygmy Corys in even a 5g tank if it's just them and shrimp and snails. And dwarf Corys shouldn't affect your shrimp breeding. If anything, the shrimp will help the Corys breeding. I have Celestial Pearl Danios in a colony breeding tank with snowball shrimp and the shrimp tend to and clean the fish eggs!

@FishKeepingAnswers

Detritus worms themselves are not bad. In fact they make up part of a healthy ecosystem. However, in a shrimp only tank where there are no predators to keep the number of worms in check, they can run rampant and eventually out compete the shrimp for food 😞

Haven't seen the negative effects from a weekend WC. I have many times observed the fish become more energetic and the neons will start schooling, Hatchets are less likely to defend their territories etc. The only problem is the amounts that are removed and the other point is the way I return the water is very slow flow using a little Sicce pump !!! Every system is different and observation is right in line with the testing
