"This Fluence Classic Humbucker set is very impressive and should go a long way to convincing guitar players that traditional pickup design...... is not the only way to great....... tone. "
Fishman Fluence Classic Humbuckers Review by Guitar Interactive Magazine. Reviewed in Issue 37 of Guitar Interactive Magazine by Tom Quayle.
Welcome to GI 37, a very special issue as it features the amazing Albert Lee. We've been trying to catch-up with Albert since GI began but so busy is his schedule (even at 70!) that we've only just managed. Don't miss our exclusive interview or Lee Hodgson's unmatchable Albert Lee Tech Session! bit.ly/GI_37
Also in this issue is the hugely gifted Thomas Blug - not just one of the world's top Rock players but also a noted amp designer, which you have to admit is an unusual combination! Tom Quayle's delivers a truly fascinating interview with a great player. bit.ly/GI_37
With a full review line-up of guitars, amps, FX, basses, acoustics, home/project studio and live gear (not to mention the amazing Jaime Vendera teaching us all how to be the next Ian Gillan!) and tuition columns we think it's a pretty tempting package! bit.ly/GI_37
Oh, and freebies? Well how about the chance to win a superb Sennheiser wireless mic system or the brand new Red Witch Zeus FX pedal? bit.ly/GI_37
GI - still growing and still unique! bit.ly/GI_37

Thank you Tom for a proper demo. I don’t understand why someone would play dent or metal music to demo classic pickups. Yours is they only demo I found which plays the music the pickup was designed for.

I wouldn't say they are the first major change in pickup design, although the design is a major progression. There have been others...Lace sensors come to mind, but I'm sure there's more.

Installed these in a LP recently...nice PU's, but for the record, they do not eliminate all noise. I still have some issues with EMI/RFI. I was hoping these would be the cure to my issue, but it doesn't seem to be...

So am I understanding this correct, no longer a need for a noise gate? I called Fishman it does reduce the amount of the amount of noise gate but you would still need a noise gate on high gain amp with metal distortion.

I think voice 2 is meant to be a jb copy. Its described as a hotrodded 70s sound and satchel who used jb for ages, uses these now so I'm pretty sure these would give you that sound. Try them first - don't quote me : |

What about parallel and single coil tones with these? Would have been nice if the guitar had switches to demo that. They sound great but I dunno if these are as versatile with just the voicing changes as what I'm used to, with standard passive hum buckers combined with a 5-way selector for parallel tones & a coil-tap push / pull on the tone knob for single coil tones.

I have a Godin LG HMB that I would consider putting these in. They have only a single set of knobs, like your guitar. I don't see anywhere on Fishman's web site that accommodates this hummbucker setup. What product set are you using? With separate pickup controls, you can split each pickup individually. How does that work with your setup?

It's not true as of this time that you can put these in "any" guitar that has humbuckers. You can buy a Telecaster for instance with one or two humbuckers on it. If you want to replace them with Fishman, the Telecaster system is made for the standard of two single coils. The battery is built into the guts of the replacement control plate with the pots, blade and one button. It can't use the battery pack show here for the Strat style nor can it use a 9 volt. If you want to use the USB battery, they make one that fits the cover that fits the cavity on a Les Paul. If you don't have that shape, you are going to have to use a 9 volt and route for it if your guitar doesn't have a place for a 9 volt. I put the Fluence Greg Koch Gristle Tone in a G&L ASAT, there were some issues that came up but they weren't impossible to overcome. I am super-pleased with the sound. No noise. Great neck pickup sound. I suggest contacting Fishman to be sure you can use their current Fluence offering unless they are for Genuine Fender Strats in SSS, Telecaster SS or Les Paul HH. USB cavity cover does not come with the Humbuckers--even Les Pauls. It's $99 extra

you can run a regualr old 9 volt, but you could run any battery that supplies at least 9 volts, some lithium batteries are very small and will supply the voltage you need, might be worth looking into if you need to fit a batt in a tight spot

Do you have to buy the backplate with the battery pack separate?? Or will the battery be included in the pickup set?
@Graiskye
@Graiskye 6 жыл бұрын
battery pack is optional, i assume you can go with a regualr old 9 volt. The regular humbuckers are ony slightly more than your other options, so I assume they are just a pickup whereas the sets seem to be over priced by about 60-70 dollars so maybe they come with the battery plate included ? Or that is the prcie you pay for the artist endprsement....lol.

Yes. Also parallel/series. Can even wire up the single version voice to run through the humbucker if you have the fluence single coil as well. So rather than a single-ish tone, you can have a 100% authentic single coil tone from a humbucker.

Nice review, but I don't get the "unlike any other pickup on the market" comment, all my guitars have coil split and a push push, giving me the exact same feature - but without having to worry about charing my guitar between gigs or practice. What is the difference with these pickups?
@MojoStrummer

it's not a coil split, thats the difference, its essentially 2 different windings in one pickup witha switch between the two

there are no 'windings' there is no wire so to speak as there is in a classic pick up design. The battery lasts for 200 hours, did you not hear that, for a lot of people that is months of playing. you dont have to charge it every time you play, its not a phone.

These pickups costs too much, it's like buying a brand new Made in Mexico Fender Strat...I'd rather get the Seymour Duncans like Pearly Gates or SH1-59 or SH-4 JB or any SD Humbuckers, your choice, you can't go wrong with Seymour Duncan pickups...Between Fishman and the SD, it's not big of a difference when it comes to the tones, anyway...Be smart, guys, that's all...:)

+Robstafarian You are right there. I've re watched the video and now realise that there is only one switch for the clearer sound. I thought the volume pot switched the neck pickup. Position two on the pickup selector would have three sounds then. Your maths was correct, my observation was at fault.

I don't get it. I see and hear no advantages over my Gibson humbuckers. Mine sound better actually. I'll be damned if I would have a usb port on my guitar to charge it. Pff. There is literally no advantage. Voicings? Really? Like we have no way to tweak our sound otherwise, lmao. Hum and interference? Really? From humbuckers? I think this is a company trying to create a market where there is none. And a lot of foolish reviewers pretending it's great.

"...creating a market for replacement pickups..."? You've got to be kidding. Fishman is an outstanding company with a stellar reputation. They've entered the market with a new design. Not for you? That's fair. But, there's no reason to cast dispersions on the company or those who like the pickups. I have the Tele pickups. They're fantastic.
