5:00 I don't understand how the matchlocks could fire so quickly, when I play in campaign they always have to wait for like 5 seconds for no reason before firiring

Karl Meisner Back in the early months of this game, matchlocks were capable of shooting stupidly fast, if you maxed their reload speed they could shoot a volley just about every second. It was really really dumb.

It could be a positioning issue, if they're not directly facing tghe enemy they often take time to adjust and won't shoot until everyone's ready

@vetren23 A normal charge into the unit will also make them go into melee. Once the unit is engaged, every soldier in the unit is considered engaged, even if they're in the back.

When attacking castles you generally want to spread the defender's forces by making your infantry climb multiple areas on the walls. It makes the defender spread his force and engage you on multiple fronts and if he doesn't you get an easy flanking advantage. Cavalry imo is completely usless on sieges unless you open the gates and range is only useful when your troops are on the same ground level as the enemy so really only siege weapons and quality infantry units are good for siege battles.

I always hear you not to use wedge formation to charge attacks. What is wedge formation for then? It is used to move though units?

Historically speaking, most battles are won by fielding more units. More men will typically beat a few but more experienced men. Even if you are a combat expert with 20 years of experience, it only takes 2-3 mildly fit and physically capable guys with absolutely no combat experience to tackle you and bring you down.

I'm still as novice as it gets when it comes to playing this game, this is my first total war game and I'm really enjoying it. Its very difficult to grasp everything that goes on though. Is there any piece of advice that you have that you would recommend doing or not doing. I'v bin playing the campaign all day and I'v got the whole diplomacy thing down just not when comes to attacking castles. Any advice would be heard and headed =)

So let me get this straight. If you use best quality with good strategy it will almost always defeat numbers. That is seeming like the smarter choice to me.

I have won most of my battles. My armies consist of huge quantities of peasant bowman and No-Dach+Yari Pikes, Yari Cav. Mostly because of the rise of Fall of the Samurai Rifle Spam. Numbers allow Hammer and anvil

just had sort of similar fight... A guy spamming naginata warrior monks. with bad strategy. Kept his general so far back of his troops and I flank him with my cav (yari +great guard) and just smashed his general before he reached my troops. Then just manouvered my cav to hammer and anvil and the morale broke soon enough. I saved the replay:) Had a katana samurai 6 chevron I didnt even use in the battle. Build my army using your katana core tips btw ;)

fish i'm not sure if i'm right but if someone has a ranged unit in a deep form could you use wedge form to expose there ranged to melee or is it better to keep them in normal form

this comment is perhaps a bit late :3 but if you wanna def castles in the classical shogun i would recommend you to get bow samurai since they are great archers, cheap, easy to get and they also beat yari ashigaru in melee which the comp always spam them

Exactly, the problem isn't that he spammed Hero units, though that's a pretty poor strategy in general, the problem is that the guy was a pathetic tactician. I'm fully aware that I'm OK at best with Total War, I don't know why you think I'm acting like an expert when I said that from the start

You know exactly what that guy meant, 'no dach' = no dachi', 'pesant bowmen' 'ahigaru archers' 'yari pikes' = yari ashigaru Besides, the encyclopedic article on ashigaru units describe them as such and they are in context, peasants because they are cheap, have very poor morale and more numerous. Whicb in TW terms = peasants. Okay?

@fishsandwichpatrol I'm still level 8 (almost 8 and half) so my level 10 opponents have a better general and they can use 1 additional retainer. This is not enough, they love to spam super-veteran monks and rush them without any tactic. This is not funny to me, so i think i'll take a break too and i hope to enjoy the single player campaign. I think I'll still try a 1vs1 online from time to time, becouse i'm masochist :P And i'll always look forward to your videos of course ;)

Good victory, nice to see that. To me _sadly_ the game is getting boring, my last 6 battles have been vs level 10 monk spammers, and when i beat them, they simply ragequit. I'm thinking of starting a single player campaign maybe.

Tactics win a game not what you have(in almost every case) so don't shit on a guy because he brought hero units. Its how he used them. Also don't act like an expert there is always someone better.
