One random selling point in the casting choices that could've inticed both American and Japanese fans, was that the big 400lb bad guy with the ball and chain is Leon White, the WWF/WCW wrestler named Vader (aka Big Van Vader in Japanese Wrestling). There is an interview/commentary video floating around somewhere on YT with one of the cast or crew talking about how he ate some funky powder that "gave him energy" (in real life) and would get all crazy and amped up, and when he was doing one of the scenes he really knocked one of the other actors down/out and everyone was all like, WTF... Just an interesting tidbit. IT'S TIME! IT'S TIME! IT'S VADER TIME!

Aww, I actually like the Streamline Pictures dub of the Fist of the North Star movie. It's at least a lot better than most other anime dubs of the era. Anyway, as for this film, I pretty much agree with everything you say. The tamed violence and lack of key characters seriously hurts it. Like, seriously, where's Rei? Rei was badass!

I don't mind the acting, I just don't like some of the liberties taken with the English script. Like Jagi telling Raoh to beat up Shin for beating up Ken creates a logical plothole because Jagi is the one who convinced Shin to kidnap Julia. Or Raoh being pissed he's not the successor to Hokuto Shinken when in the Japanese he wasn't at all interested (waiving the title down to Jagi) and wanted to conquer the world.

Streamline did some wonderful dubbing. My favorite had always been the (latter two) Dirty Pair movies (Affair on Nolandia was awful all around, but Project Eden and Flight 005 Conspiracy were well done). True, there were liberties taken with the script, but that created a more enjoyable movie than the true-to-original re-dub ADV did later (and seriously,... you cannot beat Laura Cody and Wendy Lee). I will admit though, my preference to the first dub of Akira is based purely on Nostalgia, as the Pioneer re-dub was of noticeably better quality. It is very sad that one of the side-effects of Orion Pictures going bankrupt is, the entire Streamline english library went with it, and you will never find them on DVD T~T

The dubbed anime is depressingly bad since it changes the music as well. I love the anime and the manga, and sitting through this flick was a heck of a time. Having a martial artist use a gun to shoot a man, is a little strange. Changing Lin's injury, and keeping only Yuria as asian out of the entire cast, was a bit odd, as well. I wish they had decided to play a longer game with the story, or did something else with it, I dunno, maybe a little nod or sequel hook such as "Shin's armies came into contact with the armies of the King of Fists" might have been interesting, had the movie been good. And the mystical elements are simultaneously minimal and far too out there for what they are, whereas in the original material it was eastern mysticism star prophecies, magical martial arts and destiny , this just has that weird scene with the zombie. Shin is portrayed as simply a bad guy; the original which wasn't necessarily deep even portrayed him into a much more sympathetic character. The lack of gore is notable. The music of the film, is quite a bit better than anything since, though my favorite soundtracks were from the original anime. The music in more recent entries is simply a lot of low effort metal and some typical movie music, and I found the anime soundtrack quite a bit more interesting.

They could have focus what school of martial arts Ken and Shin came from. I see them as tradional medicine practitioner as they use acu-pressure points as lethal strikes. Instead of jumping straight head on in the middle of the plotline of the series as they did. An original story sort of speak but attached to reality.

"All we want is a faithful movie adaptation!" Faithful movie adaptation:
@emmastrange5557
@emmastrange5557 2 жыл бұрын
Is it faithful? It's faithful in the sense that each scene comes from the manga, but they changed the motivations and mixed things up too much. The spirit is gone. The anime changes the events a lot compared to the manga, the animated film does the same. But both are faithful because they keep the characterization consistent. The story isn't just a bunch of set pieces stringed together.

Kinda hard to say the role of kenshiro would be better with a japanese actor. Ken always had a look similar to bruce lee, but shortly after hes starts to look like stallone. EDIT: BTW the inspirations on the series when part 2 came out where incredible. At that point we get dolph lundgren, some subtle star wars sinpiration and even sloth from Goonies (which gets his guts spilled, i get the creators didnt like the movie)

Speaking of music, the music for the Hokuto no Ken anime is fantastic. They really accentuate the emotional scenes in the show, reflective moments, or when Kenshiro triumphantly defeats an opponent. Some examples that stand out to me are: Hiai Dry Your Tears (Instrumental) Asunaki Tabi Minagoroshi no Theme Futatsu no Kyousei (Rei's theme) Sentou (aka Combat, an instrumental version of Ai Wo Torimodose that usually plays when Ken's 'splodin heads) Hard to pick a few, because there's a lot of great tracks in the show.

This movie is secretly brilliant if you know how to watch it. First, watch zoolander and get a pretty solid buzz on. Second, put it in your head that this movie is the post apocalyptic sequel to Zoolander. Every time Kenshiro does a face, yell "Blue Steel", and take a drink. Then, whenever Shin Swarms up on stage, yell "Hancel, he is so hot right now", and take a drink. Lastly, whenever Jackle does something douche, yell "I invented the piano tie", and take a drink. Do that and you are guaranteed to have an amazing experience.

I refuse to believe this movie is terrible. Bad? Absolutely! Terrible? No. Gary Daniels may have been miscast as Kenshiro, but he gave it his all, and became a huge fan of the Manga through the film. The apocalyptic wasteland looked slightly different than the manga, but still good. The change to Lin? i prefer her as being Blind rather than a mute, her losing her vision due to witnessing tragedy is a real thing, so i believe Ken helping her see more than talk. The rest of the cast felt fine to me. I really didn't think it was terrible. It's not horrid, it's just pretty bad, but i actually saw this before the anime, so i actually liked it until seeing the anime. All I'm saying is it's not the worst way it could have come out. Awesome job Olly! I still think this movie isn't that bad. There are much worse movies I have seen. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Batman and Robin. Guyver. At least there were some really cool elements in this. Though I do agree, getting off of the soundstage, and opening up the world a bit would have been a good thing. Also not holding back would have been nice. More cranial explosions. The more the merrier. It's Fist of the North Star after all.

Is the music at 12:58 from the actual score? It's actually a great piece that even makes this apparent schlock look interesting.

No matter what you think of this movie, it rocks till this day and yes Gary Daniels is misused a lot during his career.

I wish they could make a film today... as the audience are a lot better informed and there would be a demand for such a film to stay faithful to the origianl series. And the direct can't just fool around without having a deep understanding of the original series.

You may want to watch the movie "Steel Dawn" with Patrick Swayze as the lead actor. In my opinion it comes very close to a live action version of Fist of the North Star. How about a review about Steel Dawn Oliver???

11:52 Gary Daniels bug-eyed look reminds me of Trey Parker's. Maybe he would have been a better casting choice.

Yeah i got back into Fist of the North Star after playing the recent Ken's Rage games. I really enjoyed them despite what the reviews said. Yeah it seems they swapped jackal and Jagi around in the film and gave jackal Jagi's head wound.

Really great review, I hope you get around to reviewing the guyver movies at some point. I don't think I ever hsd a problem with gary daniels in the role, the movie just lacked the scope of the manga. The fights lacked any real intensity and due to nearly everything being filmed on a sound stage it just looks hokey.

I liked a lot this movie in the 90, was the best movie adaptation we could get over those years 😅

I think it is unfair to call this a bad film. Twenty five years ago, Hong Kong martial arts style action scenes had yet to break into mainstream films. Only some martial arts film nerds were even aware of John Woo and Yuen Wu Ping. Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would not even come out until '99 and 2000. Likewise, computer enhanced digital film making was still the realm of big budget studios. Not yet the democratizing force that it now has become. Where even low budget, poorly written films have acceptable SFX. This is a B film. It's cheap and dirty and full of flaws. The acting is all over the map with mumbled performances and over the top hammy acting, often in the same scene. What it is good for is a cool way to waste a rainy sunday evening with a couple friends. There is no in depth theme to uncover. There is nothing you will miss if you are talking. It's just a goofy movie with a few memorable parts. It's fun. As far as whether it follows the manga/anime correctly. That never happens when they make live actions adaptations of Anime. Heck, many Manga heads will claim the Anime waters down the graphic novel.

It's odd how I only recently got into Fist of the North star though the video game, then moved on to the manga and then you review the live action adaptation not a week after I subscribed. And just because I'm OCD about these things, Jagi and Jackal are two different characters in the manga. Jagi is one of Kenshiro's brothers while Jackal is just a gang leader.

Oliver H. I was supposed to work with my Grip crew but i fractured my elbow in three place s ...so Rocky the fight choreographer asked if i knew any martial arts. I work on with my crew for about three weeks but only did the fight seen for three days ..... it's the final fight scene with the Southern Cross. rocky didn't have enough martial artist so many of us have double fight scenes after we were killed....lol
