There’s this thing that the MR2 community commonly do with our cars and that is engine swaps. You don’t necessarily need the “Turbo” model MR2 for it to be a turbo. I have a 1987 Toyota MR2 and I have a 3SGTE engine swap and that thing is pretty quick. Total cost for overall swap would be $3-4k
@natesenft53763 жыл бұрын
@@TruNorthBandit how do you import them
@multitrackdriftu5 жыл бұрын
The third gen isn't the one to get if you want to mod it because it's a significantly better platform out of the box. Compared to the second gen, it's lighter but more rigid, shorter but with a longer wheelbase, and the engine bay can fit nearly anything you can swap in a second gen. If you want a straightforward swap for some more power, the 2ZZ is it. If you want to embarrass MR2s, Lotuses and Porsches alike, you can swap in the 2GR. You can fit wide tires in the rear without rolling the fenders or going wide body. And if you don't like the styling as much, there's more than a few kits out there that can change the look of the car. Personally, I like the styling of the third gen but a simple kit like the SARD type A enhances the look enough to make it stand out more among its peers. I love the second gen too, don't get me wrong, but too many people dismiss the third gen out of willful ignorance. At their own peril, I say.
@1TieDye14 жыл бұрын
Sincere thank you for the tip!! Unfortunately it is missing those pop up up and down headlights which will make it a hard sell for me but on the other hand, I can get it cheaper and do the same engine swap for probably better results.. once again, I am stuck with the age old question.. pop up up and down headlights or something that makes more sense in every other way?

The largest mistake from most people mocking the oversteer issue is that....the mr2 is so accessible to the normal driver that the normal driver treats them as just another car when they shouldnt. The balance should be taken into account for handling and people drive them like they are just ordinary cars. Big mistakes and thats all on the inexperienced driver. Ah yes, the MR2, THE AW11, AKA the mid engined AE86; The SW20, AKA the Poor's Man Ferrari and the Spyder, AKA the little Boxster/Elise
@neuronaut80304 жыл бұрын
The ZZW30 looked miles better than a Boxter and weighed 6-700 pounds less. Slap a hardtop on a Spyder and drop a 2ZZ or a turbo in and you've got one of the best looking, best cornering cars on the road. The Elise is a better comparison, it had the same engine and similar weight, but it was a huge miss that Toyota never offered the 2ZZ as an option in the MR-2. I've still to find out the reasoning why Toyota made this decision, best guesses are Lotus made them sign a contract prohibiting them from putting the 2ZZ in a mid-engine car. More work for me, but then again had the 2ZZ been an option in the ZZW30 they might've become more desirable and harder to get, and they're rare enough as it is so I'm glad I found one at a decent price and was able to swap in the 2ZZ. Silver linings, since I was gonna do an engine swap anyways I may as well fully build the engine before I install it....and I did ;) And as fast as it is now, it has upgraded bearings, valves, springs, crank, oil pump (known for failing) so it's hardened just in case I ever decide to really push it and turbo it. So maybe only offering the 1ZZ worked out pretty well for those few hardcore 3rd gen fans out there. Oh and pop up headlights....ruin cars, the only thing that makes the second gen look so.....basic.

After having owned three 91's both NA 5SPD, AT and finally getting a 93' they have been the most reliable, dependable, daily driver cars that I have ever had the opportunity to drive. Styling of the MR2 2nd gen still gets so many head turns and very few can figure out what car it is and who makes is. I love the mystery of owing a piece of Toyota heritage that still has yet to find a successor to the styling. It's the only mid-engine two seater that you can move the seats back or recline in, no other 2 seater can do this due to the seat is right against the back firewall. It's been incredible. 30 years going with mine and I would probably never let it go. No compromises with an MR2. If you happen to find a mint '93 don't hesitate to getting one.

Good fuel economy, was doing the same trip in a Peugeot 206 previously and the mileage out of a tank when driven the same as the 206, mileage was pretty close. Engines were 206 = 1.4 L pet mr2 =2.0 L pet. Makes actually somewhat usable daily driver car considering how compact it is, trunk/frunk space is good
@ACCAW115 жыл бұрын
Real talk, if everyone knew how easy it is to racecar or show car out a MK3 MR2 they wouldn't bother with the previous generations. The most overlooked factor is how easy it is to install a wide body on the car because every panel is bolt on. None of the exterior panels are welded and they are all easy to remove. Widebody kits are all bolt on replacement panels. slap in their engine and forced induction of choice and realize real quick it was the superior platform out of the 3 generations if you want to look good, go fast or do both at the same time. Aftermarket and OEM hard tops are available if you are willing to look for them but they can get pricey. By far the easiest of the 3 generations to work on as well. Best part is they are dirt cheap and easy to find.

So easy to work on. Oil changes were easy too. Toyota had some really clever guys and gals back then! 2ndgen MR2 is going to be hit with that classic Nostalgia tax pretty soon. You either fix a bunch of things wrong with highly modded ones or pay an exorbitant amount for a near stock one because there are not a bunch of these left sale at any given time.

So you want: Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Ford Focus SVT Nissan Sentra SE-R Honda Civic Si I figured since you did the MR2 and it’s one of my grail cars from the 90’s-00’s I figured I would give you the rest of them so you can make videos on those. Also to answer your question if I were able to get one of these? I would probably get the 3rd Gen due to the looks, and wanting the convertible; but I see your points about the second gen probably being the better deal for mod-ability, reliability, and stock quickness.

Ended up getting a 3rd gen about a year ago 😅 love it to death and the mr2 is a fun car but a body kit and some wrap to cover up half the off-brand porsche headlights is going to be needed. Its a bit bug faced.

There is a guy in Denmark who took a third gen Mr2/MrS and found that a 3.2 Vr6 engine swaps in scarily well. Like no frame changes, no firewall cutting, and all of a sudden your meh looking (from the factory) mid rear car has twice the power and the (arguably) best engine note for an engine 6 cyl or less.. that has been on my mind since I saw his videos driving around in it (swap complete). Look it up. Feckin bonkers. And just getting a little sideways when you arent even full into it pulling away. Sounds like so much fun.

Damn you kinda hate on the third gen when they are a fantastic Miata alternative. Celica gts 2zz motors can be swapped in without to much hassle and its a fantastic result. Check out Monkey Wrench Racing they have entire kits for this process. As well as turbo kits for more power. I also think that while they do look soft stock they look badass when fully kitted. Check out that APR widebody kit. It makes it look like a micro exotic.

the third one is by far the best handling car, it weights less than a miata, you swap in a 190hp 2zz, get coilovers, rear arb, brake pads, tune it properly and you pretty much have a touge beast that destroyed turbo s2k's and fd's at the gunsai touge

The MR-S gets so much hate only because it came after the Turbo, but really it's a great little car. It's fun in the twisties, you could turbo if you really wanted to, and with a body kit you can make it look like a little Porsche or Ferrari or even Lotus Evora. The MR-S deserves more respect man

The best underrated engine swap from Toyota on a MR-S and 2nd gen MR-2, is 2.4L 2AZ-FE. With a bolt on turbocharger kit. Make it up to 305 hp and 288 ibs pounds of torque. It would be epic

Misconception. Do you know what makes snap oversteer happen? Enlighten everyone
@pekonomials52465 жыл бұрын
Divergence Crew snap oversteer happens when there is a sudden disruption in weight transfer, as long as you don’t brake suddenly for a corner you’re a-ok. Besides you can correct it by counter steering it or letting go of the wheel before you spin out to redirect itself. The only reason why the MR2 is known as death trap is because of it’s suspensions which can increase chances of disrupted weight transfer thus snap oversteering. Basically just slap better suspensions and drive professionally in a MR2 and you’re a-ok. (Note: snap oversteer tends to make cars go tail first until it finds its balance)
@fcknsick5 жыл бұрын
@@pekonomials5246 pretty good explanation. Letting off throttle mid turn can also cause this, especially with the first two generations. I'm hoping to get a RHD turbo Sw20 in the next couple years personally 🤞

So here's a fun fact I learned a couple weeks ago from Togue Time (races a 3rd gen MR2 in autocross, possibly other events too) -- The MR2 has a longer wheelbase than the Miata, S2000, other generations of MR2, and even the RX-7. It's also more lightweight than all of those too. So from all the stuff I've been reading, the 3rd gen is definitely best when it comes to handling :P (plus it's MUCH less prone to snapback oversteer).

The second generation MR2 was my first car Second was the FC RX-7 Third was the BP Legacy GT Fourth was a 911 (996) Fifth was the second generation MR2 Sixth was the second generation MR2 Of all the cars I’ve driven, the MR2 was by far the most fun car I’ve owned (which is why I have 3 of them). And by no means the easiest to work on (that was the RX-7), but still easier to work on than the Subaru or Porsche IMO. In terms of availability of parts, nothing beats 911s, and the Subaru, the RX-7 was a little difficult at times, but good luck finding anything OEM for the MR2. If you buy one, you should expect to have to retrofit aftermarket parts to repair anything that breaks and luckily, there is a very sizable aftermarket for the second generation (as stated in the video). Hot tip if you’re gonna buy one, although the hardtop is the most sought after, if you can find a sunroof model, that’s not a bad option either. If possible, I’d avoid the t-bar models because they were notorious for leaks. Two of mine are t-bars and both have leaks. I don’t own a sunroof model, but I hear they are removable which I think is a neat feature I wouldn’t mind having. And imo, it’s not worth buying a turbo model unless you’re either A: not planning to modify the car or B: planning to run more than 400hp, but if you’re planning to sit in that 200-400 range, I’d say the better option is to get the naturally aspirated model and swap in either an MZ or GR Toyota V6. Personally, my plan is to build a “2.5MZ-FE” for mine.

I daily drive a MK1 Supercharged here in cali the whole snap oversteer thing is really overstated and mostly found in the early model MK2 SW20s that was corrected later in the generation. Most of it is due to people over driving the cars in wet conditions and not knowing the limits of it. In the dry it's virtually impossible to spin it out with good tires but in the rainy season or I've heard snow as well it gets a bit squirrelly.
