Neurology student here! They are a dramatic example, but it’s actually a researched idea called the “mismatch hypothesis”. Basically saying mental health today is so terrible because our brains haven’t evolved to match our modern environment. Because of that, mental illness has skyrocketed since industrialization. Technically our brains are still made for much less than what we’re doing, we cannot mentally catch up to our physical evolution.

I basically grew up in a forest and hated shoes as a kid.... until I got bit by a spider on my heel, which almost resulted in my leg being amputated at the hip. Not safe to go running around in nature without shoes either. Humans started wearing shoes tens of thousands of years ago. Our feet aren't built for running around shoeless anymore.

Personal trainer here, crawling movements are legitimately an incredible exercise due to the mobility required in the legs, hips, and spine, and the load it places on the arms (bodies are heavy and arms rarely move that kind of weight). Also really good for our brains to perform contralateral movements. When my clients are able, I incorporate crawls as often as their ego will let me 😅

Fun fact: there is actual, genuine research done into barefoot running, and the scientists found that extensive use of Nike and other running shoes cause weakness and stuff. They developed this sock-like shoe that protects the feet from the environment without any of the padding. So it’s not as weird as you think, although going entirely barefoot is not the best idea either

Growing up in a forested area, I never wore shoes and it was honestly incredible. I could walk on sticks and rocks and my feet never hurt because they built up callouses. Being able to really feel the earth below you is really special so I don't think this guy is weird for expressing that to others. That being said, after a few years of wearing shoes my callouses went away and it would hurt to walk around the forest barefoot. I honestly miss it all the time.

I used to work at a gym (a functional fitness gym for context) and we were encouraged not to wear shoes. you think that would be weird but I was almost always behind a desk and my boss was never there (i worked the 5am-10am shift so i barely saw her). The reason for it is just ankle strength, our footwear takes most of the brunt from everyday actions so walking bearfoot is actually better for your ankle strength, leading to less sprains, letting your natural foot adapt to being unsupported
