How to get soft lighting on the face while getting hard lighting on the body and arms... two totally different kinds of lighting but inches apart. This is especially useful in fitness photography where you want strong harsh lighting on the body to show off every tiny detail in muscles but not on the face. This tutorial shows how its possible without using soft boxes. Enjoy!

That was perfect. For competition bodybuilders, where bodyfat typically has to be in the 5% range to be in with a medal chance, they talk about "death face", because your face leans out so much. So definitely soft light would help them. This was very interesting, even for those of us without all the equipment. Still gives ideas for what to do with the light we have. And sticking paper of a window to partially obscure some light we don't want, or putting my pinky half over my camera flash lens to reduce light, well, there amateur "MacGyver" light flags 😃

Awesome Thanks for the great video! I believe it should have been possible to pull it off with less lights flagging off a soft fox for the face and add the hard light to the torso. I would have also blended the two types of light into each other a little bit. Might be just my personal taste. I learn from every video you post! Great job!

Super cool How too video.. My gym recently went to LED over head lighting ;-( now every place in the gym feels like a soft box.. But this setup I think would be ideal so in total about four lights and something to block the light to make sure its on target of face. One light above an behind and then one or two lights ether-side.. This setup is EZ to remember as well. Thanks!

Thank you Markus!! Great knowledge and video. Haven’t done this before. It’s funny with lighting, I find that the answer has been in front of me but I didn’t put it together all the different ways. I think if it could work almost as good with two soft boxes with grids at sides and one at front for the face? Lots of lights is meticulous and expensive. Lots of the old celebrity shots has had many lights to show the talents features the best ways, Playboy shoots as well renting 10 flashes - older guy at rentals told me. It’s s sophisticated and elegant this way but also time consuming.

Thanks for the master class on mixed lighting, this was great. Though I flag for lighting all the time, I've never thought about flagging to separate hard versus soft in this way, usually it's light soft and then add hard for effect. Big question: how to handle multiple lights with subjects wearing glasses?
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix 3 жыл бұрын
This might not help but in Hollywood the glasses are just empty frames with no glass. Otherwise you need to strategically place lights and camera and tell talent to strategically tilt head a few degrees away from reflection
@memathews
@memathews 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarkusPix Yes, my problem is I literally can't see the camera 4 feet away without glasses. Haha! But you are correct, I work on lighting angles too avoid major reflections.

Having a plethora of gear to play with... play is an essence of life... would you try the same concept of soft on top and hard on the body? This time by flagging left and right strip boxes - no diffusion - and, again flagging, a large-ish (2x3) close-in gridded softbox for the head? The overlapping shadows under the chin of the mannequin created by fresnel lights did dissipate once you put a human in the set but I questioned your choice in the beginning. Namaste.

Markus explained why he likes it that way. You can adjust the lighting to your taste using the principles he's showing. You can easily go a bit harsher with the lighting on the face by reducing the number of lights, and you can adjust the brightness by backing the lights away or by reducing light output.
