I love Mikayla sacrificing a pair of point shoes to show people what happens if you dye them that way. I wonder if people have tried to pancake point shoes with sunset makeup's colorful foundation yet, cause that seems like it would get a better color payout than sharpies

I'm glad some other dancers from the 70's era commented about what we did to the tips of pointe shoes. I thought I was remembering wrong! You know those little crocheted bun covers? Well that but smaller was what we put on the tips. They only took a few minutes to crochet, then you just sew them on. I think it was mainly for anti-slip, but probably extended the life of the shoe too. 😊
@revinaque1342Ай бұрын
Oh wow, you have no idea how relieved I am knowing that those tops were crocheted separately! I do a bit of hand-sewing and crocheting, and my hands were aching at the thought of basically embroidering the entire top of a pointe shoe with such densely packed stitches. That would take forever!

@susanneschlomer871Ай бұрын
I am a dancer trained in the 70's. Returning to dance in the last year was a WHOLE new thing...so many new innovations, most of which I find useless. Jet glue or super glue is the most toxic and rough uncomfortable thing to have in your shoe and near to your skin! I have always preferred natural shellack and actually did three pairs of shoes with it today before seeing this post. It's so much smoother than jet glue and cheaper! Love the videos and you too Josephine!
@hissingcatsАй бұрын
Yeah i know rightttt why so many toxic things on the feet
@robynmartin6759Ай бұрын
Yes I agree, we used shellack and I had a gas powered drying cupboard where I lived in the 80s so after each performance, I'd take several of my colleagues pointe shoes home, apply shellack, dry them for an hour in the cupboard and leave them in overnight, it prolonged the life of our pointe shoes as our company had a strict budged and we were only allocated one pair per season.
@susanneschlomer871Ай бұрын
@@robynmartin6759 that's awesome, never heard of the drying cupboard , however definitely about the low budgets. What we went through in the good old days. Talk about hardcore. I got $50 cdn a week for my sacrifices...though I never noticed because it was all about the dance!
@celestegross6622Ай бұрын
I think the dancer who dyed her shoes was doing it to prove that you shouldn’t do that. She was talking to the people in her comments who suggested it was a good idea.
@robynmartin6759Ай бұрын
When I was in the Queensland Ballet (more than a few years ago) we had a quick change in the ballet Pappion which included changing pointe shoes from pink to silver to matched the unitards, this all had to be achieved in 16 bars of music which included getting onstage into a long diagnoal line and positioning ourselves down on the floor on our special marks with our huge primitave pleated silk butterfly wings covering our bodies so that each one of us would be in a spotlight when the lights came up. We only just got our pointe shoe ribbons done up and tucked in in time, so no way could we have sewed our shoes onto our heels!
@caronyardley8834Ай бұрын
I used to darn mine like that too. Stopped slipping on the floors back in the day before Tarkett. Also, the darn absorbed rosin and helped as well.

RE the "how many threads does she have in there?!": with the caveat that I haven't taken ballet in 30 years and I am a leatherworker, not a shoemaker (well, I've made shoes, but def not point shoes), sailmaker's needles are great for stuff like that. They have a triangular sharpened tip, so they'll go through extremely tough materials without ripping or distorting, and a long, large eye, so it can hold heavy/multiple threads (like the heavy waxed/braided cord used in leatherwork) without having a big wad of them at the eye that you need to drag through. And there are models that have a little bend at the end that helps with going across a right angle. Glover's needles are a finer/smaller version, but I don't know that they'd survive getting drilled through all that hard glue.

Makes me wonder if I should sacrifice some rosin for my daughters dance classes lol.
@mrs_faolАй бұрын
@@lizlilliman3644 I love that you want to help kiddo BUT if she doesn't have any at dance class, it's probably not needed/discouraged. Its primarily used with pointe shoes on wood floors as satin is very slippery and has to be crushed up to be useful. Most studios have a form of rubber floor that doesn't need rosin and will actually get messed up if you use rosin.
@mermaidopulence8539Ай бұрын
@@mrs_faol hi ballet dancer here and the rosin is primarily used on the marley floors as that's what we typically dance on the most. Some studios may have hardwood floors (as they may also offer other styles of dance that isn't ballet) which in that case they would also use rosin.
@mrs_faolАй бұрын
@@mermaidopulence8539 I'm a ballet dancer as well, I've danced on Marley and hardwood. They may allow the use of rosin on the Marley at your studio, but it will actually ruin the texture over time and make it too slippery.

I’m hoping that someone can help, I’m confused with jet glue. Should I use it right when I get my first pair of pointe shoes? And if it does help last longer that would be amazing because it would save my family money. And can I use jet glue on my first pair of pointe shoes?
@RachaelTheRedАй бұрын
As a former fitter and a dancer, I would not recommend jet glueing or shellacking your first pair. Both of these materials harden the shoe which can make it tougher to break in for a first timer. Additionally, on your first pair you won't have the knowledge of where your individual shoe breaks down the fastest to know where to apply the glue. Many dancers also switch what shoe they wear over the first few pairs before stalling on the one the prefer so the wear and tear spots are going to keep changing as you try different shoes. I would recommend waiting until you've been wearing the same shoe for a couple pairs and you know where you need the extra strength.

Use some UV resin ! Instant dry with the light, and will definitely make all the parts stronger! Shoot you could try it with clear gel nail polish, or that thicker nail builder, hit it with the UV light and BAM!
