You're a rare breed. I'm sure there's many tradesmen out there who'd do an unsafe bodge job if they'd eyeballed it low, just to make sure they were quids in. In fairness, there's also many who would take the time to make sure it was safe & compliant if they'd eyeballed it low, but that'd be it. However, to take the time, hassle & cost of fitting a brand new board (even when you could have got away with filling the other one up) to make sure you're doing the best job possible, even when you lowballed the estimate?! Hats off to you sir.

Hi Tom I'm sure that in this case the kitchen doesnt switch all their equipment on at once but it's always worth considering what load could be applied in one go. Right call to put in the DB. Will make future maintenance much easier (as you said). Also makes your job (or anybody else in the future) with fault finding. Stealing ways off a variety of boards can make future work much more time consuming. Also right thing to do as the school will trust you to do a good job and you will get repeat work which will pay for the DB many times over without ripping them off. In my experience people who give out this work want an easy life and if you can be part of their inner circle you will do well

That “Paxton power supply” is a whole door controller kit, it just needs some sort of lock and 1 or 2 card readers attached to finish it off. The power supply is the white unit on the right inside, and can take a 12v sealed battery in the bottom of the unit in case of power failure, the yellow board which is rattling around the box is the actual controller itself, and it looks to be a Net2 Plus. The units can be daisy chained together with RS485 (4 wire serial bus) if you have several close together. Before the Plus was the “Net2 Classic” (presumably retrospectively renamed when the Plus came out) which didn’t have the Ethernet and just used the serial bus. You can still just build a system with just the serial bus and a USB to RS485 adapter (back in the day it would have been a RS232 to RS485 adapter. The units hold all the information about which cards are valid and when so it’s no problem if they are isolated for a while (you just don’t see which card went through the door), in fact when one of our doors was offline, we didn’t notice until some new staff complained they couldn’t get through the door... They also do a video door entry system (Net2 Entry) which uses the same door controllers, but has a video bits which operates independently apart from signalling the door controller about all the events (ring, video viewed, door opened while viewed, etc), and to open the door (you have to use a separate tool to configure which doors talk to which handsets, but you only need do that once).

We have Paxton stuff at my work and being in charge of IT I'm in charge of the Net2 software, issuing new fobs, setting door access, time zones etc. We have the very basic system (pre ethernet) and it requires the PC connected to the system to enable unlocking of all doors when the fire alarm is triggered. A few years ago it was pointed out that if the PC was off/disconnected at the time of a fire alarm trigger, the doors wouldn't release - so we hastily had green break glass boxes fitted to break the power to the electromagnets! But I agree, it's a great system and very, very reliable.

You can interface them to intruder alarm systems too so that authorised users can unset the alarm zone at the same time... Also replace the card reader on an entry system with an ANPR camera amd you can do vehicle entry gates with them

@@stevebrown1974 your supposed to have break glasses on the exiting side of each door incase of emergency. On the fire alarm side you would normally have a fire relay that breaks the lock circuit but getting the fire guys in is expensive and not always easy to juggle with access control guys so the easiest way and cheaper way is to do the fire over network like how yours is set up where only one board has an input from the fire wich then tells the rest to drop the lock

Glad I'm not involved with pricing and dealing with customers anymore.

You can buy a 20 mm ( + other sizes ) drill bit - , with a reduced size shank that it will fit into your Battery Drill - a Spade Bit will wear out quickly because of the amount of friction created by the hard material. I find that a nice sharp 20 mm bit will go through Paxolin easily 👍🏻

One thing to watch Tom. When you get a situation like 4A flowing into the "Earth bar" be careful not to touch other metal. The reason I say that is that the chances are that "Earth bar" will have some resistance with respect to the real earth and if the other piece of metal that you touch has a lower resistance to the real earth you will get a belt!! Don't ask me how I know :-)

Good video and commentary as always. I think you are correct about the time, 5 or 6 days, I would charge $60 per hour ($45 for labor and $15 for cost of labor or burden) for labor. I have no idea about parts cost because I'm not familiar enough with that specific equipment, a rule of thumb would yield 0.66:1 ratio (or 60/40) of equipment to labor yields 40hrs x $60 = $2,400 at 60/40 that's $6,000 for the total cost. There's people that have wrote books about labor to parts ratio of various jobs. Like I said I that's the best I can do with my limited knowledge of specifics on the parts required. I only become an expert AFTER I watch your videos. lol!! Keep up the great work work Tom.

Seems like a bit of a faf you got there. Personally I would have made a control panel with everything built in. If you wanted to go while hog, use a Schneider acti9 board and you can remote monitor the system. None-the-less a very tidy job coming along there.

Good video. Please show all the little details for us learners. For example the breaker did not fit but it would be nice to see exactly why. Also it would be nice to know possible reasons for large earth leakages rather than just telling us the amps.

Do you have a video on how to supply and connect a grid switch with 8X 20amp switches plus emergency lighting. How many supply cables would I need etc. Would the supply cables run through a contactor then a RCBO? Help please. I do domestic. First time commercial 🤞👍

4 Amps leakage doesn't mean it will pass 4 Amps through your body if you were to disconnect it. What would happen is the earth rail potential would rise to the supply voltage and then you would get a 'normal' electric shock. The current could be dependant upon the actual voltage and your body resistance to ground. Would also mean that some other appliance earths may rise in voltage but I'm sure you are aware of that already.

You could have used a hand electric saw with steal blades in it, that one does a good job and no sparks as well. Angle grinder is for something much more hard I guess. I have seen people cutting trays with such heavey tools , the trays can be cut with jig saw as well as a small electric saw but honestly I have seen people using angle grinder on it too.

Yep, we were made to do this when I was an apprentice, twist drills too. Our instructor would take something like an 8 or 10mm hss bit, grind it flat and say 'over to you boys, drill me a hole with it'.

Just an FYI at 12:30, if you did disconnect that 4a line from the earth bar, 4A would not flow through you, because your skin is not very conductive. If there's a 250v different in potential between the line and ground, your skin would have to be 62ohms to pass 4A, but your skin is definitely not 62ohm dry. At most, you'd pass a couple milliamps, because skin's resistance is on the order of megaohms, when dry.

on the money, i would like to know my own resistance between entry and exit with various situations, but i dont want to throw 250-500v between my hand and foot ^^
@Monkeh616
@Monkeh616 4 жыл бұрын
And the voltage required to get 4A to flow through those conductors is not exactly much - so what's driving 4A, an actual fault, leakage, or just some stray potential between multiple huge pieces of conductive material stuck in the ground? There's a good chance there's really nothing happening but physics at work.

Yeah, we sometimes screw up on pricing. Like you say, live and learn. Colleague has a habit of not realizing that data/aerial stuff costs money... Splitters and an amplifier can eat into the profits. He seems to think you can just tee into aerial cables. LOL And cat 6 isn't cheap

Hi Tom, Enjoyed enormously your video's. I did comment on your last video about the Earth leakage, I know I'm an old spark who left the trade in 1969 but still try to keep up with the latest. I still think it could still be an unbalanced system giving rise to high neutral current and using the parallel paths as a return because of high impedance neutral, that could be caused by duff joint or harmonics from the switch mode computer supplies, but I doubt if it was the cause of the leakage, your High quality clamp meters as yours obviously is have an harmonic filter so you only read the true 50Hz I would estimate it would only be 15-20mA for about 40 computers so wouldn't amount to anywhere near the measured leakage you have. If possible try turning off each supply at a time with the clamp meter connected to see where the origin of the leaked is from. Not tell you your job you are 100 times a better spark than I was, but just intellectual curiosity.

How is the Paxton system being integrated on with the contactors, I thought Paxton was a Access Control System, Swipe card brings in the contactors from a set of Aux contacts in the Paxton panel??? But then won’t it time out like when you swipe through a door, please explain Tom I love the integration between security control panels and electrical installations

I wonder how many of those damned PaxLocks have had to be replaced. I think all of our PaxLocks in work had a mechanical failure. Maglock connected to a Net2 box and reader are much more reliable, plus they can be remotely accessed, released in the event of a fire (which PaxLocks will sleep through), etc.
