A lot of manufacturers like Colmic now supply top kits with a reinforced area ready for drilling. If yours don’t have a reinforced area many of the pole repair companies like Esselle Pole Repairs can add a wrap for minimal cost. Gus

It points up the middle so the elastic doesn’t touch the sides... what about when the top kit bends when playing fish?

It very much depends on what pole you have and how strong the top kits are. To be 100% safe I would recommend getting a wrap put on them if the kits don't already have one. That said, if you are using power kits then they are usually strong enough to drill for a stipper bush provided that they aren't a really slim diameter. Ultimately only you can make the call unless you know someone who has already fitted them to the same pole as you have. If you do decide to do them I would definitely recommend doing one and trying it first before you drill them all.
