I’ve not had to change the exhaust on my XK8 but did have to do this job after repairing the over axle section of the XJ8. There’s a little more clearance, but not much. Even worse when those 2 pieces are just a single item including muffler! Tried it on ramps first. No chance at all. Borrowed a pit. Still bloody difficult, but ultimately successful. I also bought clamps like yours and broke them. Went back to the U bolt type and got much more torque on them. Anyway, nice job John!

@@ToTheGarage I've had a few people tell me mine is too loud, and to be honest, I've never liked noisy cars, what with all the young lads in cars with the CATS removed. I think what makes the Xk8 different is the fact it's got a V8 engine that's can back up the sound it makes with performance. I read somewhere.....the XK8 was a bare knuckle fighter in a Saville Row suit.....just about sums it up.

John, Great idea not to edit-out the more troublesome aspects of the fit; we can learn more from what can go wrong vice what went according to plan and expectations. Pity about the broken clamp, but Molly did try to warn you not to go sub-par (18:55). Very much looking forward to the sound tests!

I wish that you had done this video 9 months ago. I really struggled getting the stage 2 sections on the car. Never thought to cut one down slightly. Duh! However since I am not hoppy with the fit of the right hand side and I have a two post lift available at a friend's house I think that I am going to remove that side and try again (with a shorter pipe). I agree with MK Auto Detailing that it seems odd that Adamesh didn't get it quite right.

Thanks John. You pitch these videos just right and I’ve learned a lot. Will you be doing a sound test with the Adamesh Stage 2 and the original rear boxes?
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mal No Im not doing that one purely as I want to move onto some of the other jobs. However, I contacted Geoff at Adamesh and he said that it is very much the same as only changing the rear boxes. The rear boxes are bigger, But the over axle boxes take the restricted pipe with them so the increase in volume is apparently very similar.

Hi John, Thanks for another informative video, can't wait to hear what it sounds like with stage 1 and 2. I recently fitted a full stainless system to my XJ-S and it came with the U clamps and like you I was not very impressed with them so got some stainless clamps, I tighten them as much as I dare (they also had a 6mm bolt) but couldn't make the fitting tight so reverted back to the U clamps and had no more problems, I did wonder after whether they would work better with four slots cut in the pipe instead of two. I would suggestion using RTV silicone sealer on the pipe joints works just as well as Firegum, maybe better and if you have to take it apart again it is much easier to dismantle.

john brilliant work, Erm just a quick question. them 2 separate pipes just after the center box they 40 / 45 degree bend ?
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
From memory they would not be far off 45 degrees. But bear in mind that they are also cranked in the other plane as well, elevating the exit point by about 50mm at a guess.

With my replacement straight-through system the over-axle section and the curved small piece which joins to the main silencer were just one section of pipe rather than two so I have two fewer joins in my system. I wonder whether your installation would be a bit easier if you loosely joined the over-axle section and the short section together as the first step, so replicating my system but with more flexibility around the joint?
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. I did actually wonder whilst watching the video back, if putting the the two pieces fully together before attaching to the centre box would change the experience.🤔 Im sure the next subscriber to fit one will give us their opinion. The issue for the majority is that a single piece over axle section like the variant you have fitted, is it is simply too long for installation without the use of a lift. So for the majority of home mechanics a two piece overall pipe remains the only way to go.

Hi, may I ask an unrelated question? My reverse parking sensor beeps have suddenly gone very quiet, it happened after a service. Is there a volume control of some kind? (2004 XKR)
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
No volume control im aware of but then again my car doesn't have them🤔. Any ideas anyone? There is a speaker inside the steering column cowl behind a series of small holes. And on some cars , another behind the pad at the back of the cenreconsole (facing rear seats) Did anything happen during the service that would have required either of these two areas to be disturbed and possibly the speaker got. dislodged and not returned to its correct position?
@ljw5768
@ljw5768 3 жыл бұрын
@@ToTheGarage the noise comes from the rear. I’ve been reading that sometimes the speaker gets moved from the cavity behind the rear seats into the boot and not replaced. I’m going to check next time I’m in the garage.

I think if you were prepared to drop the whole system and mount the front to the catalytic converters last, you would find the length perfect. But not too many folk will want to do that

I agree the 'U' clamps look awful and suck. I see you like hard work, out with the angle grinder to shorten that pipe :) SO it expands slightly then hardens up, my wife wants me to use it :). Love those clamps, where did you get them and are they stainless, like you ? Sorry gotta say with that hat you look like a Smerf :))

Is there much of a performance gain or is this just for aural pleasure?
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi woody For me it’s for the aural pleasure (nicely put) and I do enjoy a spot of hypermiling, and the stage 2 does allow a few more mpg. 15 to 20 hp gain is realistic according to those who use dyno’s however the increase in pick up is the most noticable performance trait ( it revs more freely )

I would think doing this job on axel stands or ramps would be practically impossible. I looked clostropobic with your system.
@ToTheGarage

Definitely can be done without a lift as long as you don't mind cutting the old over axle pipes up to remove them. But its certainly much less fun without a lift.

Don’t know why you didn’t flatten out the section of the ‘Adamesh’ to match the original exhaust...??? The cubic capacity of the pipe would be the same, it’s only the shape that changes, from circular to elliptical...which makes no difference to the volume of gases that can pass though it...so should not effect the performance at all...and may make life easier when it comes to fitting it...!!
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 3 жыл бұрын
The mathematical cross section is the same but the gas flow is entirely different and it is a very significant restriction. The detail is not for here, and I will do a video explanation on a white board some time, but if you imagine I squashed the pipe down till it had a 5mm internal bore, then it would still have exactly the same perimeter length on the cross section, and the cross sectional area may even remain the same. But you instinctively know that the pipe is now much harder to push gas through.
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 3 жыл бұрын
@@ToTheGarage And if you continued to squash it down to 1mm and then zero mm you would have no open cross-section and gas flow at all. As you squash the pipe, the cross-sectional area gets progressively less and less.
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 3 жыл бұрын
@Stu N :I'm afraid that this is not correct. Do not squash the pipes as the shortest circumference for a given cross-sectional area is always a perfect circle.
