This saga shares my experiences and tips replacing the Standard exhaust from my 1996 Jaguar XK8. With a stage 1 and 2 Adamesh system
In this episode. we remove the overaxle pipes and look at the deign.
This multipart Video saga follows the entire journey of fitting an Adamesh stage 1 & 2 exhaust to my 1996 Jaguar XK8 called Purdey. Part 1 covered the decision process (Why I chose to buy this system) and an unboxing of the parts supplied. And the last part will be a before and after comparison and overview of the experience and results.
If you want to see part 1 first then follow this link

In this episode we remove the old rear boxes and tailpipes (After some effort!) We take a look at how 25 year old Original equipment exhaust parts have fared. And we go inside the silencer with an inspection camera.

Phew, think you deserve a cuppa & a couple of digies after that marathon effort, made me tired watching. Amazing they went with such a constriction in the first place.

Hi John. Referring back to your previous video in this series, don't let anyone ever tell you that squashing the circular tube does not reduce the cross-sectional area, and thereby the volume of gas being passed, as well as disrupting the flow. Simply imagine that you keep squashing the tube until the "slot" is only 1mm across. A bit more squashing and the gap is zero and at that point the flow is zero. Of course, this reduction is happening progressively as the tube is squashed. Richard

Thank you kindly! And yes the relief was genuine. The original footage was over an hour long👍. (couple of breaks to get the blood back into my arm, and shirt on more wd 40)

Good work John. I also decided to remove my system, complete with main silencer, without recourse to the angle grinder or the big hammer as I wished to sell it on eBay. I was able to remove the offside over-axle pipe with a bit of jiggling but there was no way that I could push the nearside one back enough to get the metal rod out of the rubber bushing. The answer was to unbolt the U-support holding the rubber bushing (two 10mm bolts) and remove the whole assembly. I was able to get the new system back in with the U-support bolted back in place before offering it up. I suspect that on my XK8 the exhaust system was installed on the production line before the rear sub-frame was bolted in.

Yes the exhausts were already on the IRS when the running gear was lifted up and attached to the underside of the car. This station is called the 'Marriage' station. The Compression in the pipe provided more tolerance for this operation to take place, whilst also meaning that exhausts could be removed at dealers without lowering the IRS.

Having done this exercise very recently, I am in awe that you persevered in getting them off without recourse to the spinning, grindy thing. Well done. Take a break, you deserve a cup of tea. Actually, I am embarassed that you made it look so easy and I took the easy route. I am not looking forward to the next one, when you reinstall the over axle pipe, as once again I will feel inadequate. 😢 Once again John, superb video, so well presented.

As mentioned John, it is possible to have the Stage 2, over axle only, fitted with the original rear boxes still in place, this is what I ahve had done, it provides a nicer sound and of course keeps the pipe work even throughout the system.

Another great video John thankyou, it was worth the struggle tackling these pesky bolts eh, been there done that😆. Ive already done the exhaust change, and like you , would recommend it to anyone pondering whether or not to do it. I love your videos and you're a great chap 🙂. Even if its not totally me what you are talking about on certain videos, its always a great watch. You're doing a really great job as it were with this fantastic channel 😀 . Take care and look foward to the next video Best wishes Andrew.

A scissor lift would be so nice! My 400hp XKR being strangled at the over axle section is quite sad I feel 😨...you'd think they would have had a better solution. Another great video John which no doubt will be very helpful to those who may attempt this themselves. 👍 Top-notch mate!

when I worked on the rear suspension I had the same problem ….. frozen. Since then I bought an Induction heater and recently had to open the pipes in the front (replaced Cat converter) and with the heater they where off in 5 minutes. Expensive but great. You may wonder why I had such clamps in the front? There was a Hi Flow Cat installed and they shortened the original exhaust system.

Thanks John, really informative and superbly presented. I think I’ll wait until my 24 year old pipes give up the ghost, but it may be a long wait! How come we had to replace exhausts so frequently in the old days 🤣. Cheers, Tim.

@@awalk5177 ive got the same system on my 05 4.2 XKR and I can't see any difference but its a big old V8 you know, would it really stop you changing it if it was slightly worse on fuel?
@awalk5177

@@DPW864 I don't really see any reason to change the stock XKR system yet. I do regular long drives across Europe to Geneva in one day and don't really want a headache or any negative effects. Also as mine is an 05 there is nothing wrong with the existing system so far. All my cars I like to keep as original as possible. If it ain't bust don't fix it. But I am still interested in if anything would change before I need to decide. Always looking forward.

Much as a few pound saved on fuel is not why I have done this mod, It will improve the fuel consumption a little. (as long as you drive it in exactly the same way) But I love this sort of detail also. So I will let you know what the difference is. I have a regular 250 mile each way trip that I can do some direct comparrissons before and after on.👍

Maybe I missed it and sorry to ask, I usually do things in reverse order, ie you do something then think, I think I'll do what I should have done first now, but, why did you do the stage one before you did the stage two? Were you inspired to get the 2nd stage after you'd done the first or was there a cunning reason to it all?

Purely so I could demonstrate the two levels of sound output. (Stage 2 on its own with the original tail pipes does not sound much different to stage 1 with original over axle pipes.) I aways intended to fit stage one and two and just filmed it in this way for everyone else entertainment👍. Glad you enjoyed them Bernard🍺
