That Roger Ramjet retainer was the best upgrade for that dry clutch IMO. I do want to clarify some comments I made earlier about the booster clutch. I had one on my 58, never had a problem with it. Haven't worked on the old iron for a while so when you said mousetrap I heard foot clutch, hand shift. Went cross country with 3 other buddies running jap bikes in the late 60's to Idaho. I can remember adjusting my primary in the gravel and goatheads with a flashlight in my teeth while they sat around drinking beer and complaining what a tough day it was. I do take comfort in the knowledge that my bike was the last to break down. Needing a set of brushes in Red Lodge MT. 2 of the 3 had Harleys by the end of the year, not old ones like mine but new cone motors. Later.

Harleys are highly addictive. Doubt we'll ever recover.

Great video Mike. Haven't been on you tube lately and I'm glad to see you're doing well. I've been wanting to ask about shirts and then there it is. Thank you sir, you've taught me so much and my old 61 FLH sure appreciates it😊

Ten bits of curly metal, wound spirals of their form, locked in space by temper, on the day that they were born. Their electrons float in stasis, small orbits well defined, only outside force can move them, pressing memories way off-line. But they'll push back with a vengeance, for their free length status quo, by treading on your plated sandwich, & making your brum-brum go! Greetings from England, this verdant & rain-swept jewel, 'neath Monday's dripping trees : )

Hey Mike, I bought a pan that has a 1.5 inch belt drive, 3 finger clutch set up. When I took the clutch apart I discovered it had a ram jet style retainer that was melted due to it having zero play and being very tight even on the A setting. All the parts seem relatively new with little wear and unfortunately I don’t have any spare hubs to measure or test fit to help find the issue. Have you ever encountered this or any idea of a possible cause / solution. It’s like the fibre disc on the hub is too thick stopping the hub sliding far enough into the basket. Another 2mm and it would work correctly. Any help would be much appreciated. All the best.
@pacificmike95013 ай бұрын
Difficult without seeing it. Is the hub sliding on too far? Very common to overtighten clutch hub nut and damage the hub, causing it to go on too far and cause a crack in the keyway. With a crack in the keyway, the hub gets loose on the trans mainshaft and just continue to spread. Remove the hub and get your best reading glasse and a flashlight. It's usually a damaged hub.

@@pacificmike9501 thanks for getting back to me Mike. It’s not sliding onto the main shaft too far no. I have it apart on my bench, to assemble it I have to force the circlips down into the groves and this puts a lot of pressure on the retainer and the basket causing friction. This is on the deepest setting on the retainer. For example with it assembled I have to grab the hub in one hand and use quite a bit of effort to spin the basket on the hub. Something isn’t right just not sure what. I will need to somehow get my hands on another hub and take some measurements. I think it has to be the friction disc that’s riveted to the hub being slightly too thick. The bike came to me this was so I’m just trying to figure out what someone else has done and make it work with what I have. Thanks again

I have faith. Having other parts to compare to is sometimes the way.

You did remove the tin bearing retainer from the clutch hub bearing, right?
@DanWhitehead3 ай бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 yep it was removed by whoever put this clutch together. Original cage and rollers have been removed as well and replaced with long rollers. I will work it out, thanks Mike.

Just swapped my tranny with one I built with Andrews close ratio gears. I used your mousetrap video for reference when I got to that part. That's one of the clearest, most useful videos I've ever seen. I pretty much have it memorized. As for primary chain tensioners, have you ever used the Hadyen (?) automatic tensioner?
@pacificmike95015 ай бұрын
Yes. I've run one in my Shovelhead for years. I don't know what your bike is, but, on Shovelheads, you need to trim one leg of the tensioner assembly to make it sit straight (the floor of the inner primary on Shovelheads is not parallel to the ground).
