Hey guys, James and Sarah here, back with another episode in our DIY Sprinter conversion series. In this video we’re taking you along with installing van windows on the side of our van. An equally nerve wracking and fulfilling experience.
We have two campervan windows on our nearside/passenger side. A bonded universal vent window with flyscreen at the back in our bedroom, and a bonded half slider window in our sliding door. One we installed ourselves, one we didn’t - watch on to find out why!
Find more detailed info about van conversion windows over on our blog: thewholeworldornothing.com/ca...
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this episode don’t forget to smash the thumbs up & don’t forget to subscribe.

Damp q-tip might get the iron fillings out! Guys, I'm loving this series - the build is pretty impressive so far and can't wait to what you both get up to in the next one!

Great trick prepositioning rolls of tape on the glass to be installed! Here's a tip if you cut more holes in your ride--borrow a nibbler. A nibbler looks like a jigsaw but has a notched, half-inch diameter pipe on the business end. It cuts sheet metal by shearing it, making no metal splinters/sawdust/fine shards.

Hi guys, actually if you go to a car maintanence shop you can buy small extending hand tools with a strong little magnet on the end that is about the size of a pen rubber made for reaching small metal ( obviously ) objects like screws etc that drop when you're working on a car engine. that should be small and strong enough for getting the fillings out. I know this from when my kids decided to throw things out the back door and extending that tool to catch them and pull them through the cat flap !! Be amazed at what your kids can teach you

If you crimp the two skins together it’s much easier get the single trim onto both edges. Great job though guys. Much more rewarding when you do these things yourself.

If you do crimp the two skins together and fit the trim does the window still sit flush against the outside?

a decent vacuum cleaner with a small nozzle would definitely work. The smaller nozzle creates a more powerful vacuum if you think about it. you can even tape something over the end of the tube using a cone

A decent vacuum cleaner was something we were lacking 😅 But we didn’t think about concentrating the suction - good idea!

How about canned compressed air for blowing the filings out - usually used for cleaning computers etc. Comes with a straw like a wd40 can that will let you direct it. Really enjoying the series.
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 жыл бұрын
Didn’t even know that stuff existed! But that would be perfect if it comes with a thin nozzle like on a can of wd40 👌 Glad you’re enjoying it 😀

Guys, this whole work is just wonderful! Actually your conversion and ideas are the best I've ever seen. As for the filings I'd have used a simple screwdriver to loosen and lift them up and vacuum them out. By the way. I see you used the glass adhesive only around the hole, though the window itself was bigger. I might think that water can get between the glass and the bodywork where there's no glue. Or did it spread enough to reach the edges?
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, that’s so nice of you to say. We did try loosening and vacuuming but they just wouldn’t budge unfortunately. The vacuum we used probably wasn’t powerful enough. Regards the adhesive, yes it spreads out quite a bit when you push the window on which is what we think creates the watertight seal. We’ve not had any issues so far so we think it’s ok 😀

Admire the efforts to do your own glass fitting. Curious as to why you drill so many holes prior to using a jigsaw? Drill one hole and jigsaw the rest

Hey you two, loving your series and I am excited to see all your other episodes. I think you could use a vacuum to suck them out if you take some tape and tape a little slot at the intake of the vacuum. (\ \) like so 😋

How bout a heavy duty vac at a car wash or a narrow way with your vacuum (use paper towel tube to squeeze in
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 жыл бұрын
The heavy duty car wash vac would probably have done it but I don’t think we’d have wanted to drive with a hole in the van door. That tube idea may well be a good one though, didn’t think about adapting the nozzle itself 👍

Is it normal that when you install the trim on the inner wall, you can still see the outer wall? Is there a way to make it look better and hide the outer wall as well?
@aldouseverard3900
@aldouseverard3900 Жыл бұрын
You're supposed to fit a trim that covers the inner and outer skin - so it buts up against the glass and you don't get a rough edge. They got it wrong in this video I'm sorry to say.

Just a couple of tips, drill one small hole then jigsaw the entire window in one even go, de burr with a rotary bit, put the straw on your vacuum cleaner nozzle to gain access, rough up the outside to prepare for primer, prime before touching up edge, apply sicoflex with a v groove using nozzle tip pressed against body... Basically please rename the video to how not to fit bonded windows.
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your very comprehensive tips @FairySox especially on the video name ⭐️ Maybe, since you’re clearly an expert in the field, you should make your own video about putting your own window into your own van. We followed the fitting instructions of the company we bought it from. Window is still in and going strong after a year btw 👍 And “sicoflex”?! Really?!!!

sometimes its good to watch other peoples mistakes and when you see two amateurs doing this it gives others confidence to go out and give it a try. As I will be doing soon. Its easy to criticise, I used to do it myself but I find it dosent really bring anything to the table unless it has genuine comedic clout.
