Fitting new tyres on a Hyundai Kona EV. The noise rating makes a huge difference.

In this video I was fitting new tyres to a Hyundai Kona EV, so thought I'd share tyre information. When buying new tyres for an EV, take note of the noise rating (in decibels). You may not think that a few decibels will make much of a difference, but when looking at tyres, 3dB is actually twice the noise!
In this case I was replacing the tyres on a 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric and replacing the existing Uniroyal tyres (rated 71dB) with Goodyears (rated 68dB) and apparently the difference was extremely noticeable even on very wet roads.
To learn more about the EU labelling on tyres and that important 3dB actually is double the amount of external noise, see www.goodyear.eu/en_gb/consume...

I have had Efficient Grip tyres on my wife's ICE car, which is lighter than an EV I know and they have currently done around 35000 miles with 3mm left, which is 2x the mileage of the factory fit tyres. I've been very satisfied with them.

Just changed the fronts on my Ioniq. The original Michelin energy savers are hard to get and expensive so I went for Hancock Ecogrips which have a 1db higher rating but same A rating. I could detect a slight increase in noise but I’ve tuned it out.

The tyre noise rating relates to the external noise the tyre generates. The noise you hear from the tyres within the car comes up through the suspension and body. With tyres worn to the wear marks it is noticeably louder inside the car and can sound like a bad wheel bearing. When tyres are new the noise inside the car is reduced due to there being more depth of rubber absorbing the vibration between tyre and road surface. Your customer just noticed new tyres are quieter but his neighbours noticed his tyre noise is less than it was.

I fitted efficientgrip performance 2 tyres to my previous a4 and it was so much quieter and softer and the efficiency on that was insane. I will definitely fit them to the Ioniq when the time comes.

I changed from the original Michelin Primacy 3 tyres on my MY20 eNiro because at 19k miles they were making an awful noise and it seemed to be getting worse as they wore. I’ve been running with the same Goodyear tyres that you recommend in this video and I can confirm that they are much quieter and remain so as they wear. I’ve just replaced the front ones but the rear ones are still fine. The mileage is now 50k. It’s important to note however that different road surfaces do cause more road noise than others and this seems to be magnified or at least more noticeable in an EV. It’s also worth remembering that some EVs are worse than others in this regard. I find Tesla’s particularly bad for this while newer Kia’s and Hyundai car have improved imo.

The Efficiency Grip are great tyres. Pretty quiet, wears well, great grip in dry and wet alike. Predictable in bends and tight twisting country lanes. Not good in snow but they’re a summer tyre. Well worth the price I’d say.

Kona’s were terrible for noisy tyres as well as easily wheel spinning. We fitted those efficient Grip tyres to our daughters Yaris and noticed when my wife bought her new ID3 last year it had same tyres, albeit summer as well. Very quiet tyres. My Ioniq electric has the new Michelin E-Primacy tyres which are very quiet. Bought them at Costco for a great price.

I used to have the Michelin Pilot Super Sports or Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and I’ve changed them to the Hankook iON Evo (EV Tyre). They are much better for maximising range, noise and longevity where these should last way more than the Michelin. The Michelin were rated 71 db and the Hankook are 68 gb.

Yes tyres are one of the most imporatnt elements on an EV not only for safety but also comfort. You should probably have mentioned tyre load rating because EVs are heavier generally you need to buy adequate weight rating tyres.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 6 ай бұрын
As always, tyres have to be the right spec for the vehicle as I said. But EVs aren't that much heavier, if at all in many cases.
@CampGareth

Does the weight rating on a tyre affect ride comfort? My leaf came from the factory with 90 weight rated tyres but someone put 95 XL on it and the ride is firmer than I would like.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 2 ай бұрын
Yes a tyre rated for a higher load will naturally have stiffer sidewalls. It's a bit of a myth that EVs are heavy. They're not as heavy as people think.

I had the Good Years on my Dynamo conversion. Then I put the Conti all seasons on. Increased noise, and vibration as I don’t think the mobile van balanced them properly. I’ll stick to Good Year and a garage next time

Got Michelin Crossclimate 2 on mine, made a big difference to the cheap rubbish tyres that the 3rd party dealer had fitted. I find these ok and great winter grip. I went for XL extra load tyres , is this something you would do or are they not necessary? I was thinking about the weight of the battery..
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 6 ай бұрын
Xl or not, you need the appropriate load rated tyres. In this case, the Kona requires 94 (or greater), which is 670kg. So 4 x 670 = 2680kg, which is much greater than the vehicle and a full payload. No point in XL in this case (unless they were quieter or cheaper).
@ricco123tube

XL have a stiffer makeup which can result in a harsher rider and much noisier tyre.

I still have the summer original tires on my 11/2015 Zoe R240 - actualy Kleber winter tires (horrible!) and need to replace the summer tires. Thanks to your video, I think I will go with these Goodyear all seasons Fulda Multicontrol (€86,-) are cheap and not that bad, but not so good as these Goodyear tires (€122,-) Firestone Multiseason GEN02 € 100,- Dunlop Sport All Season € 102,- Bridgestone Turanza All season 6 € 120,- what do you think? We don't have a real winter in germany and the tires should be a bit efficient (as I have the small 22kWh battery) and be good on dry and wet road...

@@GoGreenAutos that's good to hear( no pun intended) I've had Goodyear efficient grip performance on a 2013 focus, and to be honest didn't notice a difference in noise compared to the kuhmos that were on there before. The Kona EV is a noisey car with the o.e Michelin's on. But last extremely well. Done 22k and still pair on 4mm and pair 6mm. Next set will definitely be goodyears though.

Pay attention to weight,the rating on these good year is 94, very low. Means that they will wear down quickly..

94 is the manufacturer's rating. That's 670kg load rating per tyre. So 2,680kg in total which is way more than the car and its maximum payload. So well over spec.

How does 3db less equal half the noise? ?
@davidmenasco5743
@davidmenasco5743 6 ай бұрын
The decibel scale is logarithmic. To increase the sound pressure level by 3dB, you have to double the power. So 3dB less represents half the acoustic power. On the other hand, in terms of human perception, a reduction of 3dB is a modest amount. A reduction of 10dB is supposed to sound half as loud. On the other other hand, these single number ratings obscure differences in the frequency spectrum of the noise, which can make a big difference.

Generally you need an amplitude attenuation of between 6-10dB to create the perception of the volume being halved. The rule of thumb in audio engineering is -10dB.
