Between planking we are working on some other projects. The transom finally get fastened in its place and we make good progress on fitting the sternpost.

Really liked the way the sternpost came together. As you say way too heavy to do in one piece so building it up in stages was a great solution. The transom as we knew it would looked fantastic and those home made copper bolts will be a great addition.

Hi Tim thank you again for your great comment and all your words of encouragement on all the videos! We appreciate it so much. It all came together so well even with some hiccups along the way. The result is once again worth all the effort!

This is just fantastic content - among the very best on this silly site. Truly joyful stuff you've shared with your audience. Even more remarkable is the scale and scope of your project, and how relaxed you two are pulling it off so well. Tarkine is a true work of art. Nicely done, folks!

Little by little.... I've built a few big projects over the years (I'm 8 years into a 3 year project at the moment), and I am a big believer in just plodding on. Think a lot, plan in advance, but more than anything, just turn up every day and do a solid day's work. It'll get done when it gets done.

Brilliant Philosophy. The only way to get things done is just giving it a good go and keeping at it. It will get done, I like that thought too. Thank you for your comment Mike!

Your choice of music reflects the style with which you both work. Work is more satisfying when it is done slowly and with grace. You may have dogs but your work style is more cat-like.

Just sat here and watched all five episodes, really nice to see the progress you're making building your boat. I hope you don't mind me saying but the copper nails should be used with a copper rove and the nail cut and dressed with a ball hammer to round the nail over the copper rove. It's not only much stronger than turning the copper nail into a bolt but also by putting the copper nail with a stainless steel bolt the two will react together and copper galvanic corrosion will occur.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Hey mark thankyou for watching! These bolts are too big to be messing around with roves, and the bolt/nut combination is plenty strong enough for this, especially with the aid of epoxy. We’ve done plenty of roving and clenching in the past and we will rove our sheer clamp for sure! There will also be no galvanic corrosion here as we are using bronze nuts - currently being made now. Thanks for your input, advise and experience is always appreciated.

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Many thanks for your reply, Is it common practice to use a copper threaded nail for a structural fixing where you are from? I only ask as I am a shipwright based in the UK and in the 35yrs I've been building and restoring boats I have never seen threaded copper bar of any description in any boat construction wether traditional or new. I have seen plenty of silicon bronze, bronze, A2/A4 SS used this way but never copper due to how soft it is which is why a roved fixing would be more suitable. Personally with the way your transom is held on I would use silicon bronze or A4 SS treaded bar. Over my career I have built and restored many boats and ships of all sizes, many too Lloyds A1 standards as well as off shore coding. Best of luck with the rest of your build.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Well yes we’ve seen plenty of this, have you ever seen copper dumps? The transom is essentially laminated to the transom frame which the planking is screwed and glued to. This is cold moulded boat building, epoxy plays a big part. The transom is also notched into the frame, there will be knees and back stays will also be through bolted, the deck is glued and screwed into the top of transom, then the fibreglass will overlap the whole surround of the transom, the load the nuts and thread take are not an relevant and minimal, We are sure copper bolt and bronze nuts will suffice for this, there is a time and place for stainless or bronze and this is not it. We have more than 35years boatbuilding advise surrounding us so don’t fear we are in safe hands.

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River My concerns had nothing to do with the capabilities of holding the transom whilst being attached to the transom frame nor holding the transom on under sail. More to do with the mechanical fixings being able to do there job should the transom be struck side on. In such a case epoxy will only do so much and by not having sufficient fixings in that area that would be a concern for me and a copper nail turned into a threaded bolt wouldn't get the ok from a surveyor in the UK which is why I mentioned it.

Hi there, thank you for commenting and watching! Both our backgrounds are in square rigged sailing, we did maintenance and woodwork on big ships but no background in boat building. We learn as we go and are lucky to have found jobs at a wooden boat yard where Matt has almost finished an apprenticeship in boatbuilding alongside our project. Thank you for your interest!

Guessing that it's quite a bit cheaper laminating pieces than building it from a single large piece of timber
