I just found your channel. It is amazing, down to earth, with no nonsens, and a professional handsome couple. I'm going trou all your movies, it looks like a documentary of a national geography. One off the best I ever seen. Go on. I look forward to your next steps. Many thumbs up. I wised I was 40 years younger. By the day I made old school oak livibable sheds. 👍👍👍👍👍

I’m so happy I found your channel, your build is so amazing, nothing quite like taking a chainsaw to one of the most important blocks of timber on your boat!!! I liked having you say “It had to be done” about 4 times....stressful for sure!

Yes it certainly “had to be done”! It was more trying to convince each other that it was the time to do it. Scary!

Love this channel. Can’t imagine taking a chain saw to something I have worked 2 years on. You are a brave couple.

Thank you! That's a lovely compliment. It was scary but I like how you can see Matt's confidence growing in the process. There are some fantastic examples out there of people carving the most beautiful things with chainsaws. Thank you again for watching.

I've seen some fine work done with chainsaws (Arabella's stern post) and arbortech angle grinders (for Tally Ho's propellers) so you are in good company. Great post, you should be proud of your skill.

Yes there are some fine channels out there! I think we still need some more practice before we are as skilled as Arabella or Tally ho!

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Maybe to make you feel better about your shoulder; We saved our entire lives to buy a small farm. In 2015 we bought it. The first thing I did was make compost - about 10 tons of it! It took 4 1/2 hours to turn one pile. The long and the short of it, I got a lung infection and am allergic to my garden.. The last two times I planted out I had to be driven to the hospital, in an ambulance. This year I wore the respirator religiously and showered immediately after working in the garden. I'm wheezing right now but I'm not in the hospital! "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." - John Lennon

Even when you know its correct and you have to do it it is still not easy to cut a big chunk out of something it took ages to make. But when you do a chainsaw is definitely the way to go. A good job done.

Hi Glenn, we don't have our prop yet but we know the size of it! And Matt has tripple checked it all before cutting away so much timber. It was scary at first but he got the confidence up quickly and away he went with the chainsaw! Thanks for commenting!

May help . But 1.75" clearance to stern post is minimum. Any less and you'll get cavitation. Really form a good profile , minimum spoilage . My names Ian and I'm a marine engineer of 35 yrs . So built a few

Those types of cut cause a bit of nervousness but it has to be done nevertheless. Therefore you ploud forward then the nervousness just fades away.
@jerrylynch5611

Good work, am idea for next time, get an arborists pruning chainsaw, they are much more manageable and if you use the top of the chain, you actually get more control because the chain isnt getting pulled into the cut, you have to work against the chains motion, if that makes sense. Plus you can get carving bars and low profile chains, it's amazing how precise you can be, with a bit of practice..

Thankyou for the advice! Always a bit wary of using top of chain. You can probably tell I’m a self taught left handed chainsaw man which looks a little odd to a trained eye such as yours.

If you ever have to remove the prop you need way more free space in the rudder blade. otherwise you'll have to struggle with taking of the whole blade, or take out the shaft inside the boat which is a big pain..

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River forgot to mention the bearings - cutlass or stave bearings do loosen up after some time and need replacing. Some boats I have seen have their shafts offset from the centerline. So half an inch there and half an inch on the rudder might do the trick without much work. I love your boat - she sure looks great!

That seems to leave perilously little in the way of sternpost. I REALLY hope you've got that right. I wonder if Gartside might have suggested less out of the sternpost, and more out of the rudder, even if it meant having a slightly bigger rudder to compensate.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Ah yes it would seem that way but do not fear there is plenty of sternpost remaining! It’s deceptive with the planking, especially strip planking that has no “rabbet”. This is also very similar to what gartside drew, Tarkines stern post is still plenty strong enough.
