Fitting wheels to axles

This is a bit of a departure for my channel. I actually build my own engines and coaches, as you'll know from reading many of my previous ramblings. Currently, I'm building A GWR 51xx. I've had awful problems with wheeling the chassis, I've gone through 2 sets of wheels. I use the GW wheel press to mount wheels, and I've had a good run of success...until now. So I approached my friend Morgan Gilbert who uses a watch makers lathe to mount his wheels. This is a fairly lengthy clip of how the process works. It's not very formal, it's a bit two mates chatting and having a laugh.
There will be another clip called 'The Result' showing the outcome of the wheel mounting.
I'm not suggesting that this method should be a norm, it is just another method of mounting wheels. For those of you who model in 7mm, you have no idea how lucky you are to have axles that accept wheels that are already quartered and fit without much bother.
Thanks Morgan for doing such a top job!

That's an interesting approach. Thanks for sharing the video.

Thanks for the comment, but it is just another approach to mounting wheels. I like systems that reduce the chance of error. regards Mike

Interesting but why such elaboration..?? Slight pressure of wheel down onto vertical axle, thumb against outside face of wheel and press axle against firm wood surface. Turn around and align 90 degree angle (12+3...12+9) and push home, set back-to-back ... Job Done! All my models run fine and wheels perfectly aligned...replacing tyre-traction wheels on 2P..14xx., etc :-) Fingers, thumbs, and eye-sight...sorry but it would drive me around the proverbial having to set-up such elaborate machinery.

GWR wheels from Gibson have a substantial front boss that extends beyond the rim of the wheel. The first job was to remove the excess boss so that it was level with the rim. I've used a GW wheel press for all my engines since I started building P4 chassis 30 years ago. I like systems that remove the chance of error. As I said in my introduction...it's just another method.
