As someone that wanted a bladeless multitool, and ended up with a modded cybertool lite, I will share my own research. To pass TSA guidelines there are four important things to note. First of all, they might try to stick the "No swiss army knife" rule on you, because of the cross Design on the front. However, TSA guidelines clearly state that you CAN have a multitool in your bag, as long as it doesn't have a knife blade. You will probably want to make a sheath for it to rest inside of to be extra compliant. Second is the scissors. TSA states that you are allowed to have scissors if they are less than four (4) inches to the fulcrum. Since this is a small set of scissors, it should be fine regardless of which fulcrum the agent chooses to try to use. The third is the most surprising. The bit driver will fall under the "collapsible tool" rule, and must be less than seven (7) inches long when fully extended and assembled. The bit driver should just barely squeak by this. The last one doesn't apply to your build, but is good to know. According to TAS guidelines, corkscrews are permitted on the plane, as long as they are not attached to a knife blade. Hope that is helpful!
@FittoSurvive3 жыл бұрын
Wow!! That is VERY helpful actually! Thank you for all of that information.
@nobodxy3 жыл бұрын
The problem i see is that it looks so cool that the agent might want it for themselves, thus trying to take it from you. I'd love an update once you actually went thru the airport with it

Yes, thank you very much! All info is helpful. Sadly I still feel that it will come down to the agent and how they are feeling that day and if you have the time to whip out the document and argue your point.
@dagger3413 жыл бұрын
@@korgan7779 if you want to fly with a tool like this, you will be served well by having a paper printout of the regulations, so that if there is a "Problem" you can show that you are in compliance.
@SuperSkylighter3 жыл бұрын
It is difficult to claim something is TSA compliant…because I’ve had a bladeless leatherman style confiscated on an international flight because of the scissors..and ive flown enough to know that it’s really up to what mood the agent is..They can pretty much say anything is non compliant if they feel it is.
@FittoSurvive3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that really does make it risky. It'd be so much easier if there was a set rule that tools had to comply to without the judgment of a grumpy TSA agent.

I’m a flight attendant and have taken a few bladeless tools through since 911, one for over a year of getting spot checked , only to have it removed by a tsa agent that probably wanted it for himself. While in uniform I can’t really argue my point as it gets me in trouble , I just have to roll with it . Multi tools are useful for us as we have stuff in the galleys that need tightening sometimes and all of the hotel windows are often screwed shut, posing an evacuation risk . It really is up to agents at tsa and if they want your stuff. There is no guideline of any sort just a no blade rule. Small scissors are allowed , and then you have the 12 inch knitting needles that are allowed so none of it makes any sense at all. I’m currently carrying a Gerber shard and a cheap set of Amazon mini pliers . I’ve had one shard confiscated, after hanging in there for 6 months .

I personally wouldn't try to take it on the plane only because if they didn't allow it, they might confiscate it unless you have a way to mail it back home? It may make the first leg, but the return flight may get it captured. I lost a white handled Swiss climber at the airport because I forgot I had it in my backpack. The TSA kept it. I forgot to put it back in the checked bag.

Hey! Thank you for subscribing! The person I made this knife for said that he plans to fly with it. He's a flight medic and said that he flies often. But definitely it is a risk every time. @@FittoSurvive thank you for the reply. Seems like the demand is high. I'm a AS9100 machinist and own my own mill and lathe. Do you see it as a viable income generating business?
@FittoSurvive2 жыл бұрын
@@ahole5407 The demand is high. If you were able to make quality scales but keep them in the budget range ($50-$80), it could possibly take off.

I’d love to have a TSA friendly tool. I would like to keep the cork screw and screw driver. I suspect the reamer would not be allowed.

Interesting that the awl would cause trouble being as short as it is.

You would think by now there would a Swiss style knife system out there that you can choose what you want to carry for the day. Make it east to swap out components like a quick connect/ disconnect system maybe? I think they would be very popular with folks.
@FittoSurvive2 жыл бұрын
That would be a major breakthrough for Victorinox. Having a modular Swiss Army Knife would be very popular for sure.

12:34 I think sandblasting them before or after might give it even more rugged texture, no ?
@FittoSurvive4 ай бұрын
@@adrianTNT Yes, sandblasting the titanium scales would give them a slightly courser texture.

@@adrianTNT Gotcha! I've never tried sand blasting the tools before acid etching. Might be interesting to try out.

Great build as always! I wondered about the liners, I think you said weight and durability is almost the same, but what about thickness? And how do carbon fiber liners compare? I imagine carbon fiber makes the SAK thinner, but maybe brittle and less durable?
@FittoSurvive3 жыл бұрын
The thickness is also identical. They are both 1 mm. Carbon fiber is very similar to the G10, I have tested to see how well it flexes, but I assume that it would perform just as well. The carbon fiber that I use for liners is also 1 mm, so it would not make the knife any thinner.

Did you also acid washed the spring for the scissors/plier?
@FittoSurvive2 жыл бұрын
No, I did not acid etch the scissors or pliers spring.

Just watched this again and a new question. Can the two blades be replaced with the file? (And the file tip ground round so it’s not a weapon)
@FittoSurvive2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the file layer could replace the blades layer. I think it should be TSA-OK.
@oxxnarrdflame88652 жыл бұрын
@@FittoSurvive cool, thanks. I don’t think the awl will pass TSA. Maybe replace it with the mini screwdriver or just cut it off and leave the hinge.

So how much would it be to make this tool leave the pliers out and add two lock picking tools to it that I would need? I would need a tension bar and a rake tool
@FittoSurvive2 жыл бұрын
It would cost around $350. I have added a lock picking shank from Sparrows to a SAK before, but I don't know how I would add both a tensioner and rake.

Ok can ya tell me where ya got the colored tweezers and picks? Have modded a few SAKs before but mostly taking a layer out and replacing with my Jeep key and front door key

The colored accessories are original from Victorinox. They can be found on their website, on Ebay, and some other websites. Search for "colored Victorinox tweezers" several options should come up. Swapping out a layer for keys is pretty cool. 👍🏻👍🏻
