This was a blast! I took apart my trusty Victorinox/ Swiss Army Knife Compact and made it something more. After three years of carrying and two years of dreaming my Compact has leveled up. Through some workshop know how and a bit of elbow grease I made custom micarta scales and replaced the Parcel hook with a philips head screwdriver. In my mind this has made this Compact the best in pocket EDC tool out there! I hope you enjoy the process. Remember, cut once, measure twice. Catch you on the next one!

Love this video, wish victorinox made customisation much easier, would be amazing to see all the weird and different ways people would configure them. great to see someone actually do it on their own, just a thought though, wouldn't it have been easier to replace the cork screw with the phillips and re-profile the parcel hook into the glasses screwdriver? might leave a big gap between the spacers on the back is the only downside to that

Good work. I consider flat screwdriver on Handyman as a Philips replacement. That next to hook. If not that then I would miss Philips on any SAK. Swiss champ has it all but is too big. I think that if Victorinox made SAK that had Philips and that glasses screwdriver put somewhere else in different form , then it would be win win situation. Regarding scales you can make infinite number of scales on 3d printer in normal PLA. Superb quality and perfect fit. There is free model on thingiverse for it. Micaela FTW anyway 😊 of course.

Very cool video! Just a small tip, the corcscrew is also very useful for untying strong knots or popping off something like a broken stud that's no longer connected to the fabric and such extremely difficult to remove (something I had to do in my last ski holidays). It has a lot more usecases than you might think! So, I don't know If you resharpened the corcscrew tip, but it might be worth it.

For EDC I actually prefer the Pioneer with alox scales. But for backpacking and camping I take the Huntsman - the hook is great for taking hot pots with a wire handle off the fire and the core screw can be used as a marlinspike plus it can hold a fire ant tinder and steel. Totally under rated tools.

this was my first thought. Kudos for getting it in there. I would have removed as much of the corkscrew I could before removing the meat of the screwdriver. I'm sure he had his reasons and all-in-all for a prototype this turned out rad.

@DeputatKaktus
@DeputatKaktus Жыл бұрын
I totally get why you are worried about the integrity of the Philips head and yes, it is probably going to be a lot weaker now. On the other hand I am not sure if this matters - because at the end of the day it is still a „Jack of all Trades, Master of None, Use when in a pinch“ Swiss Army Knife and not a „proper“ T handle screwdriver you’d have in your tool box which is designed to withstand more torque. Also: the screwdriver on a SAK tends to fold down and out the way if you bear down on it too much at just the right angle. Depending on how you hold the knife, it can pinch your index, middle or finger pretty badly. And if you slip, you’ll probably skin your knuckles and unleash an unholy flood of cussing. Ask me how I know…. 🙄 If you really need to put serious torque on a screw, a SAK would probably not be the best tool option to begin with. There is only so much you can do with it. Even the venerable Swiss Army Knife has its limits. 😅

This may have been suggested already, but if you ever watch David C Anderson on The Knife Center's videos, the use he has found the corkscrew to be handy for is the removal of especially stubborn knots... otherwise he's like everyone else when it comes to that tool and finds no other use for it. ps. I know this video is two months old and you already made it but this might help other people. I've replaced the scales on a couple sak's and it helped to use the old scales as a stamp. You can ink them similar to how you would a rubber stamp and then transfer that onto the new scale material. Not perfect by any means but it works well if you want to make your own custom scales and still have the scale implements in the factory positions. Also, if you're transfering to micarta, it helps to scuff the surface so the ink can penetrate.

I believe on the compact the parcel hook also had a nail file, allowing you to use hook to clean and file to trim. Is this a function that might justify the hook? Also the corkscrew can be issued for undoing stubborn knots. I always have an awl on my SAKs but for some this is another use for the corkscrew. It also works as a parcel hook or rope handle. A knot in the end of some cord threaded into the corkscrew gives a strong hold.

Happy Friday Zac, its your money, your time & effort & if you like the end result then good luck to you, use your Compact in good health! My opinion for what its worth is that the Compact is an over priced under tooled & bad value for money SAK that has an inherent fault that cannot be remedied in that unlike most 91mm SAK's it cannot be fitted with a SwissQlip and also it only comes in boring red scales so I can understand why you wanted to replace them. I bought one a few years ago, in a very short while got "buyers remorse" & consigned it to the cupboard ever since. However, replacing them with Micarta scales IMO detracts from the knifes looks & makes them feel yucky to hold . I could understand you replacing the scales with decorative Plus scales in a more exciting color such as translucent rubi red or sapphire blue, hard to come by emerald green translucent scales or white, blue, black , yellow, pink or even a two color combination but equally boring & Yucky to grip Micarta when a skilled knife guy like you could have gone in for a decorative Titanium scale set or even stainless steel ones or 3D printed scales ( plain, fancy & even glow in the dark ones are available on line ) . Sorry Zac I give you 10 for effort but Zero each for style, usability & aesthetics. Recommendation :- sell or give away that ugly thingy & buy a 91mm Climber ( hands down the best 3 layer Urban users sAK ) & fit it with Plus scales & a SwissQlip & you will still have change in your pocket over the price of a Compact. Full Disclosure: I do not work for any knife seller or have any financial investment in knives or after market parts & my opinions are based on a lifetime of carrying & collecting SAK's of all sizes & shapes.
@zacinthewild

Great write up! Before settling on the Compact I carried a bunch of SAKs including the Climber and found the Compact just suited my EDC needs better. I 100% agree with you on the price. I’ve never understood while it is so much more expensive. The clip wouldn’t work for me either because I carry my Compact as an in pocket tool more then a single carry knife. I love that you got your system figured out! I also love how diverse the carry world is. Thanks for the insight and the 10 for effort👊

@@zacinthewild Thanks Zac for your very kind reply & sorry if I was in anyway rude, I'm just a crusty opinionated old guy with a lifetime of SAK carry experience & have amassed a collection of over 160 SAKS to date & am still buying more ( 100 are 58mm Classic & Classic SD's with decorative scales , 30+ are larger sized special & annual edition SAKS & 30 are EDC carry rotation SAK's ) I do carry other knives such as Flipper & OTF knives but my real passion ( obsession ) is for Victorinox SAKS and that includes a recent appreciation for a the now passed into legend Wenger line of SAK's ( including rarities like a new in box ultra rare Wenger / Swiss Buck Trekker) . If Victorinox would make a 2 layer 84 mm Alox Cadet with a scissors that IMO would make a perfect upscale alternative to the Compact & be worth buying & carrying as part of my EDC rotation.

Suggestion for next time: mark the scales from the back side and develop the inside slots and holes FIRST before you cut the scales out. That way, you have a lot of material to hold with as you do the tiny detailed work. Then, cut and fit to the knife. That would make it easier to hold and a LOT less cringeworthy!

Trick for transferring complicated things like the inside of the scales: coat them in a thin layer of paint and press them to the micarta. There's a ton of other pigments and stuff that's made specifically for this, but cheap acrylic paint, or better stamp pad ink are the best things I've used. If you go with ink you really need to layer it on thick, but it's sticky and transfers pretty exactly. Paint is more forgiving in transfer, but can smudge and be less exact. Still, I've done lots of stuff using paint.

'The Climber' with +Scales is superior. You loose the nail-file from the back of the hook. BUT :o For just ONE layer, you gain SO much more: 1 extra small blade. 1 Bottle-opener that has a nice Pry. 1 Can-opener with good Driver (Also on Compact) Two tools that are somewhat better than the combo- MOST important: - The Awl. - The Awl is essential for drilling, sowing, poking, etc. SO. SO - Many more + than minuses with the Climber. --- I hereby challenge you to carry a Climber with +scales. See if the 1 extra layer is significant to dissuade from EDC. For a little while, at least. At worst: I was right; and you are better off. ;)

I'm kinda of the mind that, to "MacGyver" an SAK, really makes it more one's own (get the reference, peeps? 😉 lol) - Great vid, man! 🙂 Just one thing sorta sticks out, though... the way you reshaped that screwdriver... d'ya think if you tried working on a stubborn screw, that it might twist the crap out of your hard work? It'd be interesting to see a field test... just puttin' that out there 👍

Corkscrew is more than a smal screwdriver holder. For example: 1. Opens corked bottles (duh!) 2. Untie knots. 3. Pry the battery out of a cell phone. 4. Screw it into a wall and hang your coat on the SAK. 5. Staple remover. 6. Smooth out the hole you just made with the reamer. 7. Clear clogged faucet sprayer. 8. Bicycle tire valve tool. 9. Holds the micro screwdriver. 10. Pick gravel out of tires. 11. Rip open a blister package. 12. Ice pick. 13. Mark a pilot hole. 14. Clean mud out of shoe soles. 15. Knot the end of a cord. Thread it through the corkscrew. Handle. 16. Pop balloons. 17. Aides in sewing. 18. Clean mud out of sprinkler heads. 19. Push used snare wire through it, to straighten out the wire and remove coils or kinks. 20. Pulls the drain plug out of a tub. 21. Open the corkscrew and screw it tightly into a broomstick-thickness stick. Now open the blade. Tie it securely. Survival spear for fishing. 22. Hang the SAK from a piece of cordage from the ceiling. Plumb bob (I have the middle of the handle marked on one mine). 23. Corkscrew + a metal lid = a filter or wire mesh for cooking. 24. Carry a chunk of C4. 25. Pull frozen shoestrings tight, or help loosen them. 26. Helps get the innards out of a squirrel. 27. Gets the candle stub out of a candle holder. 28. Start fights on multitool forums. 29. Remove the fuel filter from a lawn mower. 30. Although the new corkscrews are 4 turns, you can use them for range estimation. 31. O-ring remover for your flashlights. 32. Pry out partially-exposed nails. 33. Tighten the apron strings on a wrestling ring. 34. The inside diameter of the corkscrew is 1/4". I'm sure you know what you can do with this. 35. Open just a small hole in a coconut. 36. Lift stuck items out of boxes. 37. Fish the tape out of a clogged VHS tape. 38. Remove patches from a flintlock gun. 39. Remove the inside of a shotgun shell, making a blank. Remove the wad and powder too. 40. If you don't want the mini screwdriver, the corkscrew can hold a ferro rod. 41. Tap a tree for sap. 42. Undo zip ties without breaking them. ✌️😉

Zak, I have been modding SAKs and Leathermen for years. You did a great job on your mod and that it is your first mod. Did you know the combo tool also works on Phillips screws? It is not perfect but it works. There is a to make an inline 1/4-inch bit exchanger adapter to fit on your combo tool. Do a Google search (1/4-inch socket wrench to 1/4 hex-bit adapter. Buy one you need a 3/16 magnet to put in the square drive side. You can bed the adapter to the combo tool like you bed a rifle action to a stock. Just to try it out to see if you like it buy some Tacky It a sticky clay used for hanging pictures. fill the square drive side with Tacky and push your combo into the Tacky and try it out. The only bad part is you will have to carry the adapter in your pocket. If you decide you like it and want to bed an adapter with J-B Weld Message me and I can tell you how to do it. It's not hard.

The GOPRO doesn't autofocus! Its focus is locked. Anything less than 12 inches from it will look blurry. Hand doesn't help. Found out about this recently too. Great video BTW!

Super tinker and tinker deluxe are my favorites as well as compact. The downfall of the compact is no screw driver. Even the flat head sucks.

I just watched many of your videos today and I have really enjoyed your content and philosophy (I subscribed). I wondered, have you ever had your hands on a Swiss Army Mechanic? I have had mine for 35 years. It is great and pretty compact at only 3 layers.

You do you... Should be the name of this video. I never found PHILLIPS a screw driver useful in any pocket knife, mainly because it never actually works, too short shaft, no space to rotate and inability to apply torque. It's still a fun and interesting watch though!

pound for pound, the Compact is almost the perfect Swiss Army Knife… but the parcel hook, while rather whimsical, isn’t nearly as useful as the rest of the tools, so: parcel hook -> Phillips head or… -parcel hook -> rounded awl -add in-line Phillips head to main side, as well as the “orange-peeler,” and a nail file if it would fit… -maybe keep parcel hook, since I added a layer?

The perfect EDC SAK is the Craftsman, but sadly they don't offer it any more. I had to transform a Handyman in to one by replacing the corkscrew with the Phillips screwdriver. Well .... perfect for me.

You have way more patience than I will ever possess. I think I would have replaced the corkscrew with the Phillips or buy the SAK version with the corkscrew and find an eyeglass screwdriver for my keychain. Maybe the parcel hook was just aggravating your OCD in which case I fully understand. Now I want a SAK with a parcel hook simply cuz I don't have one.

I wouldn't even think to modify my beloved Victorinox SAK! But if you like to do so why not? This hook (like Felix Immler showed 13 tricks for the hook!) is great for fixing the pen to the knife to write more comfortable with it! 😇 This Philips is a very one dimensional tool IMHO. 😔

Use the parcel hook for the flip flop repair. Stick the hook through the bottom, hook the thong and pull through. Much easier than using the pin Also works for the strings in sweatpants/hoodies

I only discovered your channel a few days ago and liked it at first sight... until I watched THIS video. I'm gonna cancel my subsciption immediately. As a young man I worked at a DIY shop. We cut hunderdeds of pieces with what you call a 'table saw'. One worker thought himself a rotutinier and didn't use the safety equipment, just like the way you do (or better: don't). I then had the pleasure of driving him - fast - to the emergency hospital while he held parts of his fingers in his other hand while bleeding on my car's floor. So I first 'hand' saw what a few hundereds of rpm by a 3mm rotating saw blade can do to human flesh and bones and I later could hear him through the door during his treatment in the surgery. How irresponsible can one be to show such a way of handling a buzz saw (6:41, 7:05)!

It would be sooo easy for Victorinox to put the mini screwdriver in the scales, like toothpick, pen, tweezers, and terminate the corkscrew's reign of terror once and for all.

I can see that you think differently but, this seems to be a huge amount of fiddeley work for a small amount of payoff. I expect that if it made sense Victorinox would have already done it.

I can't wait for each one of your videos to come out. I wanted to come back to this one to place the comment because it is what I'm looking for. I usually carry a bugout or an elementum and a SOG powerpint but don't need the pliers/ tweezers because I carry a leatherman in my sling bag. If I were to send you a Compact could you at least put the Phillips head in? I don't need the handmade scales but it would be cool if I could say they were made by you. DM me this is at all possible. PS i can't do or have the availability to the equivalent you do to try on my own
