It's time for another 5 Play Challenge, with five plays involving basket interference and goaltending. You will watch five basket interference & goaltending plays with the opportunity to decide the ruling before an analysis is revealed. These videos, as always, are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball. Every basket interference and goaltending situation in this 5 play challenge is played 3 different ways. The first version is in real time, as you would watch it in a normal game situation. Then we slow it down and zoom it in for a closer look at what happened. The last view breaks down and marks the video with annotated diagrams to show what actually happened providing an analyzed ruling based on the written rule.
The 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but instead simply references rules as they are written and guidelines to help appropriately apply those rules. Every basket interference & goaltending video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see basket interference and goaltending plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
Video #1
- A player dunks the ball but it bounces out and back in while the player continues hang on the ring. The official calls basket interference. What do you think?
Video #2
- An offensive player tries to lay the ball in crossing over the basket and throwing it up on the other side. The ball is blocked by a defender who has to go through the net to get to it. The official calls basket interference. Was it?
Video #3
- Easy shot goes up and the defender swats it away keeping it from entering the basket. The official calls basket interference. What is your ruling?
Video #4
- On a fast break layup, again a defender blocks it before it enters the basket. The official rules goaltending but does it qualify? Watch and find out.
Video #5
- The ball is shot for an easy basket but a secondary defender comes from behind and blocks the shot. No whistle is sounded. Should it have been a goaltending violation?
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule, such as basket interference and goaltending, is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.
