Blackcurrant is delicious! We often use them in a similar way to the way you use grape, so our Skittles have a blackcurrant flavour rather than a grape one for example. Most times when you see an American trying British food, they will automatically assume any black sweet from the UK is grape flavour when 99% of the time, it's blackcurrant. As far as squash goes, we do have ready-made fruit drinks but also have squash as an alternative. Comes in tons of flavours such as orange, summer fruits, apple and blackcurrant etc.

I never knew America didn't have blackcurrants...they're great!! Blackcurrant Jam on toast is my fave. Haggis is also surprisingly good. You'll find it everywhere in Scotland but it's not an everyday food, it's more a once-in-a-while kind of food, except on Burns Night when most Scots have haggis for dinner.

While I was doing IT work during the week, for a client in Dumbarton back in the mid 1980s, loads of friends and relatives would ask me to bring them back a proper haggis from a Scottish butchers. It took me a while to realise that each butcher tended to only produce and sell haggis, on one day per week, so I'd hunt around for a butcher who had it, on the day that I wanted it. Nowadays of course, it's available in chilled form every day, at many supermarkets north AND south of the border. A question for any Scottish people: Do high street banks in Scotland STILL close for an hour or so at lunchtime? That was a really annoying thing back in the '80s - cashpoints were fewer and harder to find in those days, and popping out to the bank in my lunch break was always a fruitless effort!

So basically the USDA decided that, rather than making slaughterhouses do a better, cleaner and more accurate job of the slaughtering of animals to make use of all of what the animal can provide, they would just allow them to be more “sloppy” for lack of a better word, and just outright ban the body part(s) that are a little trickier… kinda reminiscent of the whole “chlorinated chicken and eggs” situation too; because they simply allow poorer upkeep of the living animals and just do what they need to do afterwards to the animal products afterwards to make them “safe for human consumption”… 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️

As the Cadbury family were Quakers the selling of alcohol was banned in the village. Known as a "dry" village. 1905 George Cadbury Jnr was in charge when the Cadbury brand of chocolate took off. The rest is history. Fry & Rowntrees ( Quaker family built garden village outskirts of York) chocolate started in similar ways. Hershey’s used to get their milk from Europe and it did go-off on the journey. That explains the sick taste. When they started using fresh milk from US cows the taste went away, but customers complained. So, they started adding the chemical that caused the the tase to make it artificially taste of sick.
@edwardgatter46103 жыл бұрын
Please do a little research…….. your comment is factually untrue, there is a really good video on this subject by a channel called “Cheddar” were they tell the history of Hershey and his process that adds butyric acid to milk in order to increase the shelf life of fresh milk sourced in the US., they also refer to US legislation at the time that stated surplus milk had to be disposed of after 72 hours, at this time there were no forms of transportation that could get milk from Europe to the US quick enough…….it would be completely rancid and unusable. Because of new technology butyric acid no longer needs to be used but is added because it’s the taste that most Americans know.
@thyop893 жыл бұрын
That vomit taste is actually butyric acid, like you find in parmesan cheese. People in the US are used to the taste so they don't really notice it however, to the rest of Europe, US chocolate is horrible. The first time I ate a Hersheys kiss, I legitimately thought someone had been sick in a vat of chocolate and that it was a mistake because American rave about these things. It's also weirdly grainy, but I'm not sure what causes that...

Squash is either concentrated fruit juice or whole fruit purée (depending on what type of fruit) mixed with water and sugar/sweetener, and sometimes some other flavourings and colourings. You dilute it approx 5:1 with water (or 10:1 if you buy double-strength). Best way to describe squash in US terms would be like a concentrated version of home-made lemonade (for lemon-flavoured squash) or Sunny Delight (for orange-flavoured squash). SunnyD is probably more artificial than orange squash, but it's the closest thing I can think of.

A few points (please excuse the ramble and I apologise if comments already made - so many to read through 🙂): Commercially available British 'Black' Pudding is almost always made with pigs' blood (and due to regulatory restrictions this is very often made with dried blood these days) never in my experience blood from cows, although Ox Blood Pudding does exist, also, there can be regional differences between pudding recipes, these are usually centred around the type of grain used namely barley or oats and the amount and sizes of the pieces of 'back-fat' (and sometimes beef suet) that may be included in the recipe. I make my own but one of my favourite commercially produced is the 'Bury Black Pudding'. Regarding our fruit squash, this really is not like juice mixed with water at all, I would think the closest US equivalent would be Kool-Aid or the like.
@babycakes89183 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know about the black currents , that is interesting. It makes sense that there isn’t any food flavoured like that in the USA. Although I don’t agree that cranberries taste the same. Squash - I can’t believe you guys don’t have squash. I don’t think I ever thought about it not existing out of Britain. Lol, concentrated syrup. We wouldn’t call it that. Squash is cheap cheap cordial (mixer) that you can mix with water. There are different flavours and you can choose what you want. A small amount of squash topped off with water , or sometimes lemonade (British lemonade - (sprite) instead of USA lemonade). It’s juice but with the consistency of water. Flavoured water. Hershey’s are vile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It tastes like vomit 🤮. Literally.
