Blackcurrant is delicious! We often use them in a similar way to the way you use grape, so our Skittles have a blackcurrant flavour rather than a grape one for example. Most times when you see an American trying British food, they will automatically assume any black sweet from the UK is grape flavour when 99% of the time, it's blackcurrant. As far as squash goes, we do have ready-made fruit drinks but also have squash as an alternative. Comes in tons of flavours such as orange, summer fruits, apple and blackcurrant etc.

Squash, I would call it cordial, is basically most of the still soft drink at home market. There are lots of brands doing lots of flavours, the most common being orange. Robinsons are probably tye biggest name. There are two brands that are accosted with particular drinks. The first is Ribena, which makes the most popular blackcurrant drink. The second is Vimto, which I grew up on, as it started as a regional product from Manchester. Its made from grape, blackcurrant , raspberry and a secret blend of herbs and spices. When I discovered this was just a British thing, I was genuinely amazed, I couldn't imagine not having it.

Fun fact - you'll rarely hear squash being called squash in Scotland...In Scotland we call it diluting juice...same as we call carbonated drinks fizzy juice or just juice...fruit juice is the same though...but basically everything that isn't milk, tea, coffee or alcohol is just juice here! I never knew America didn't have blackcurrants...they're great!! Blackcurrant Jam on toast is my fave. Haggis is also surprisingly good. You'll find it everywhere in Scotland but it's not an everyday food, it's more a once-in-a-while kind of food, except on Burns Night when most Scots have haggis for dinner.
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett 2 жыл бұрын
While I was doing IT work during the week, for a client in Dumbarton back in the mid 1980s, loads of friends and relatives would ask me to bring them back a proper haggis from a Scottish butchers. It took me a while to realise that each butcher tended to only produce and sell haggis, on one day per week, so I'd hunt around for a butcher who had it, on the day that I wanted it. Nowadays of course, it's available in chilled form every day, at many supermarkets north AND south of the border. A question for any Scottish people: Do high street banks in Scotland STILL close for an hour or so at lunchtime? That was a really annoying thing back in the '80s - cashpoints were fewer and harder to find in those days, and popping out to the bank in my lunch break was always a fruitless effort!

The Wandering Ravens have a lot of great videos, I highly recommend reacting to more of them. Squash is everywhere in the UK, every house with kids will definitely have some and a lot of houses with only adults will too. It can sometimes be very sugary, but there are healthier versions too with less/no added sugar and more juice. It's very cheap to buy because you only use a tiny bit in each drink and then fill the glass up with water (or as they mentioned, you can make your own fizzy drink using sparkling water). And yes, blackcurrant is a very popular flavour of squash, probably second only to orange.

So basically the USDA decided that, rather than making slaughterhouses do a better, cleaner and more accurate job of the slaughtering of animals to make use of all of what the animal can provide, they would just allow them to be more “sloppy” for lack of a better word, and just outright ban the body part(s) that are a little trickier… kinda reminiscent of the whole “chlorinated chicken and eggs” situation too; because they simply allow poorer upkeep of the living animals and just do what they need to do afterwards to the animal products afterwards to make them “safe for human consumption”… 🤷‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

As a child in the 60s I grew up with orange or lemon squash, it's a concentrated fruit juice which is diluted in water. You could only buy coco cola or Pepsi in the smaller bottles from a public house if your parents bought it for you. Cans of pop came later into supermarkets in the 70s, then larger bottles in the 80s. My mother wouldn't buy fizzy frinks for us because they had too much sugar. I'm not keen on fizzy pop but I occasionally have the odd Pepsi rather than a cola because I prefer the taste. Ribena is a well known blackcurrant drink that's been around for years.

Squash tastes like a watered down fruit juice, you can get cheapo and store made varients that taste different to the more expensive brands. Also if made with sweetners they can taste a bit clawing. You can get them in all kinds of fruit flavours and mixtures. Basically it's concentrated fruit syrup that you mix 1 part to five parts water, either tap water or fizzy or UK style lemonade (like 7Up/Sprite) Ribena is a famous Blackcurrant flavour of squash, it's often seen in supermarket own brands as Apple & Blackcurrant. You can also freeze these drinks to make ice lollies. We rarely call it Squash, it's just known as Juice and is common as a drink for kids & is available in orange, Summer Fruits, Lemon, Strawberry, Lemon barley water and other fruits, mixes and spices..

Some squashes have real fruit extract added, notably Ribena, but some of them seem to be largely flavouring, colouring and sweetener (not so much sugar these days). Still, they taste nice enough - often citric and refreshing with cold or iced water. A bit like diluted fruit juice. Tennis players seem to like one kind of squash 'Lemon or Orange Barley Water' - a traditional recipe involving soaked grain and lemon.

Blackcurrent is in Germany die "schwarze Johannisbeere". Also available here in white and red. Small berries that are relatively sour and a little bitter. Mainly used for jams, juice drinks and cakes. In France it is used to make a crème de cassis liqueur. It tastes great in sparkling wine as Kir Royal. Squash is in that meaning a fruit-concentrate. In Germany we call it syrup.

Hershey’s used to get their milk from Europe and it did go-off on the journey. That explains the sick taste. When they started using fresh milk from US cows the taste went away, but customers complained. So, they started adding the chemical that caused the the tase to make it artificially taste of sick.
@edwardgatter4610
@edwardgatter4610 3 жыл бұрын
Please do a little research…….. your comment is factually untrue, there is a really good video on this subject by a channel called “Cheddar” were they tell the history of Hershey and his process that adds butyric acid to milk in order to increase the shelf life of fresh milk sourced in the US., they also refer to US legislation at the time that stated surplus milk had to be disposed of after 72 hours, at this time there were no forms of transportation that could get milk from Europe to the US quick enough…….it would be completely rancid and unusable. Because of new technology butyric acid no longer needs to be used but is added because it’s the taste that most Americans know.
@thyop89
@thyop89 3 жыл бұрын
That vomit taste is actually butyric acid, like you find in parmesan cheese. People in the US are used to the taste so they don't really notice it however, to the rest of Europe, US chocolate is horrible. The first time I ate a Hersheys kiss, I legitimately thought someone had been sick in a vat of chocolate and that it was a mistake because American rave about these things. It's also weirdly grainy, but I'm not sure what causes that...

Squash is either concentrated fruit juice or whole fruit purée (depending on what type of fruit) mixed with water and sugar/sweetener, and sometimes some other flavourings and colourings. You dilute it approx 5:1 with water (or 10:1 if you buy double-strength). Best way to describe squash in US terms would be like a concentrated version of home-made lemonade (for lemon-flavoured squash) or Sunny Delight (for orange-flavoured squash). SunnyD is probably more artificial than orange squash, but it's the closest thing I can think of.

A few points (please excuse the ramble and I apologise if comments already made - so many to read through 🙂): Commercially available British 'Black' Pudding is almost always made with pigs' blood (and due to regulatory restrictions this is very often made with dried blood these days) never in my experience blood from cows, although Ox Blood Pudding does exist, also, there can be regional differences between pudding recipes, these are usually centred around the type of grain used namely barley or oats and the amount and sizes of the pieces of 'back-fat' (and sometimes beef suet) that may be included in the recipe. I make my own but one of my favourite commercially produced is the 'Bury Black Pudding'. Regarding our fruit squash, this really is not like juice mixed with water at all, I would think the closest US equivalent would be Kool-Aid or the like.
