Was a big fan of Empire and the follow up, Empire Uprising. I seem to remember it being stopped mid story. I kept hoping they would continue it but haven't seen it since.

Empire Uprising was completed because I bought the collection from IDW. I keep hoping that Waid and Kitson will do another sequel.

Some interesting choices in there! For me, I always shout out Brandon Graham's Prophet series. Criminally underread. Tom Scioli's American Barbarian, Kaijumax, Michael DeForge's Ant Colony, The Case of the Missing Men, The Spire, MCMLXXV, Season of the Snake, Tarantula, OMWOT, and Aama are all fantastic.

I remember Empire as much as I forgot it. FYI my suggestion from Radical Comics, the people who gave the Rock as Hercules, Caliber. I love King Arthur and read many takes on this story. Caliber takes place in the old west. Merlin is a Native American Shaman. Lancelot is basically Doc Holliday. Guinevere is a Lady for sale who hangs with Lance. Arthur is a farm kid who draws a special gun Caliber for justice nor revenge. Great art. If you haven't read it, pick it up. I have an oversized hc which i hunted down and loved.

So happy to see some Wasted Space love! I'm madly in love with the concept of a satirical existential space opera and the realization is outstading. This is the book that made me fall in love with Vault comics and especially Moreci's writing (both The Plot and Barbaric rule too, btw). Unfortunately the third volume seems out of print right now, so I have that painful hole in my collection

Empire is so freaking good. It might be my favorite thing Mark Waid ever wrote. And while it does work as an all in one story, I still think anyone who likes it should get Empire Uprising as well, also from IDW. I was worried the sequel wouldn't be as good based on what a letdown The Kingdom was after Kingdom Come but actually the Empire sequel was really good. Empire Uprising also has art from Barry Kitson. Other hidden gems I recommend: Maestros by Steve Skroce (Image), The Psycho by James Hudnall and Dan Brereton (originally DC but later collected at Image), Giantkiller by Dan Brereton (also originally a DC book but collected at Image), and Zenith by Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell (2000 Ad).

Empire is one of the best and most unique superhero comics out there. I've been telling people to read it since in came out. I think Jess picked it up on my recommendation. The despair is the whole point. There's not a single redeeming character in the entire book and it leaves you with a feeling that only great stories do.

Just like to say Amen to your review of Empire . It also has a Game Of Thrones type of intrigue to it. I dug all the issues out of dollar boxes years ago & wondered why it`s not on the popular lists of best comic ever. Some of the best art & story I`ve ever read . it deserves some type of deluxe edition .

Omar, you gotta read Midas from Boom! This is the collected 2 TPB that was once called The Midas Flesh. The story of what happened when King Midas got his wish, but turned the entire World to Gold. Such a fun sci-fi adventure.

A connected hidden gem to Empire is the Barry Kitson, Keith Giffen, Alan Grant DC L.E.G.I.O.N series (later in that series the same Kitson/Waid team that even later made Empire) that too had some non-sympathetic lead characters and interesting plot lines with great Kitson art. Though this has very little chance of a DC collection ever, but I think old issues can be picked up relatively inexpensively (unless Lobo ever gets hot again!).

Omar, going to recommend bring some love to Hard Time the complete series by Steve Gerber and Brian Hurtt. An underseen masterpiece from the writer who produced so many masterpieces. It’s never been collected in full and it was one of the last things Gerber did before his death in 2008. From DC comics.

( love the format of this series ) MISS BETTER LIVING THROUGH CRIME: crime story during the 20's ( Humanoids ) SET TO SEA by Drew Weing : beautiful little book ( Fantagraphics ) REED GUNTHER funny and entertaining western tale ( Image / 2 volumes ) THE BIBLE EDEN : the Adam and Eve story with gorgeious painted art by Scott Hampton THE STUFF OF LEGEND : a mix of Fables, Toy Story, The Wizard of Oz and scary stories, but has its own voice ( 5 volumes, so far ) BABY BLUES ( several collections ) by Rick Kirkman : if you like Calvin and Hobbes, then you'll love this RUSE Enter the detective and RUSE The silent partner by Mark Waid, Perkins, Guice ( Crossgen ) SIEGFRIED by Alex Alice ; prepare to be blown away, once you've seen the art ( Archaia, 3 volumes )

First thing that came to my mind upon hearing “Friendo” was Ghüs’s giant walrus buddy in Saga. Also, I’m surprised that Martin Simmonds isn’t trying to be Bill Sienkiewicz in this book (see Dying Is Easy, Department of Truth), and it looks way better.

Empire definitely has to be one of Mark waid's best work it's cover totally from a villain that's actually what the world and he's just really try to hold on to this is trying to hold on to everything he has and actually discovering several secrets about his own life it's like really crazy with some of the twists and turns on you do with the whole entire wife how she died was crazy

Nothing wrong with the art on Wasted Space. Would have liked a 1980's coloring better, though. The flashy color takes away from the scribbling and noodling, which would make the art stand out better. Booh, modern coloring, booh! Great tip, anyway.

@davidpressley56533 жыл бұрын
Yeah wasted space for me definitely has a lot of inspiration of preacher in there wouldn't talk about the subject of God and it really makes you think about what God does and really his actions and motivations in believing and stuff like it takes the whole concept of religious of a really turned it on its head now that I really do think waste of space is definitely under the radar this is one of those series that it should be talked about a lot more but it's not for some odd reason Michael deadly has another series that's really good the plot I really hope you do like an old reader new reader on this series and the plot
