Five Day Ice Challenge brought to you by: www.coolersonsale.com
We tested the top names in the high end roto-molded cooler industry to see just how long they could hold ice. Is it worth spend the extra $100+ to get that name brand cooler? Our results may change your mind.
All coolers were pre chilled for 24 hours prior to the test beginning.
Coolers Tested:
▶Yeti Tundra 45: amzn.to/1WDaRfh
▶Grizzly Coolers 40 Q: amzn.to/1Tf7bAt
▶Engel Deep Blue Series 50 Q: amzn.to/1Tf7fjK
▶Pelican ProGear Elite 45Q: amzn.to/1WDaWQ6
▶Igloo Sportsman Series 40Q: amzn.to/1Tf7lIh
▶Igloo Sportsman Series 55Q: amzn.to/1ZIM9dj
▶Canyon Coolers Outfitter Series 35Q: amzn.to/1WDb9mv
▶Siberian Coolers 85 Q: amzn.to/1WDbdT7
▶Orca Coolers 58Q: amzn.to/1WDbx4g
Results: As you'll see in the video, some of the more expensive coolers such as Yeti and Grizzly did not hold ice as long as Pelican and Engel. Therefore we cannot say that spending that extra money on a name brand cooler (unless you are after than name brand only) is not worth it when it comes to ice retention. Watch for day by day progression over the five days of how each cooler performed. Below is a list of the results from top to bottom of best performing:
1. Orca Coolers 58Q: amzn.to/1WDbx4g
2.Pelican ProGear Elite 45Q: amzn.to/1WDaWQ6
3. Siberian Coolers 85 Q: amzn.to/1WDbdT7
4. Canyon Coolers Outfitter Series 35Q: amzn.to/1WDb9mv
5. Engel Deep Blue Series 50 Q: amzn.to/1Tf7fjK
6. Igloo Sportsman Series 55Q: amzn.to/1ZIM9dj
7. Igloo Sportsman Series 40Q: amzn.to/1Tf7lIh
8. Yeti Tundra 45: amzn.to/1WDaRfh
9. Grizzly Coolers 40 Q: amzn.to/1Tf7bAt

You don't need a rocket science degree to test melting ice, just use the same amount of ice in each cooler, that's all. Ever hear of a BTU? Any cooler that has more ice than others has an advantage over those with less. It really isn't that complicated....

Insulation doesn't mean much if your gasket doesn't seal. No matter the brand, they all vary. Stick a flashlight in your cooler and close it. Observe for light shining through. (if your gasket is permanently glued into place, you're S.O.L) If light shines through in any areas pull the gasket out and place a "worm" of rolled plumbers putty under said area to push the gasket out in that area. Replace gasket, and sit on the cooler to form the plumbers putty under the gasket. Unfortunately, no company can put out 100% perfect seals every time, sometimes its better to just modify something yourself. Plumbers putty doesn't cure or harden so you wouldn't be voiding any warranty. Many of these tests and results are inconstant and I believe gasket performance is the reason, yet you never hear this issue discussed.

Protip: Instead of buying bags of ice, fill a few Ziploc bags with water and leave them in your freezer. They will last far longer than cubes and won't get your food all wet. Also, they will take up space in your freezer so you'll save energy during the year as the otherwise empty space won't have to be cooled down every time you open the door. Plus, if your power ever goes out, they will save the rest of your food. One time, I was at a 3 day concert with a girl who was hot so I gave her one of the bags of water with the huge ice cube still in it and she loved it. She put her feet on it and it cooled her right down! This could actually save a life if you have a friend who's overheated! Protip #2: I knew a guy who put a couple pieces of aluminum foil over the top of his cooler before he closed it. It supposedly kept the cold air in better so you could just open the cover then pull up a corner to grab what you wanted. Also, I imagine it would also work as a radiant barrier if your cooler is going to be sitting in the sun for any length of time. You should buy two different color coolers of the exact same brand and test if having a light color that reflects more light actually makes the ice last longer.

As a Registered Maine Guide leading 10 day canoe trips on the Allagash River, I use the Cabela's Polar Cap® Equalizer Cooler and routinely will have ice (starting with block ice) after 7 -9 days on the water. I have found nothing that compares. They are heavy and expensive, but fit perfectly across the gunnels of Old Town XL Tripper Canoes and hold ice for the duration, which is a game changer for diet options on long trips. Great video, thanks....

I love these cooler tests, but one thing I never see tested/tried is something I used to do years ago with a Yeti 160qt (back when it was basically Yeti or nothing). I traveled extensively and I'd leave my Yeti in the back of my Ford Explorer all the time through heat/cold/etc. One of my tricks was to stop off at Publix and buy a block of Dry Ice and toss it in the bottom of the cooler, close the lid and give it an hour. After that, I'd hit up Sam's Club and toss in about 120lbs of ice (these were 30lb bags they sold) and I'd wait an hour. After my ice was sufficiently frozen as hard as it was going to get from the dry ice I'd load in a couple of cases worth of water and all of my food. Dry ice obviously pre-cools the cooler drastically. Ice on top is insulated underneath by the dry ice but the cooler doesn't get cold enough to freeze your food and drinks, because the ice itself is insulating your food/drinks from -109F temps. That Yeti would hold ice for 2-3 weeks in the winter and 7-10 days in the summer, sometimes sitting in the back of that SUV baking in 120F-130F temps. I'm a HUGE fan of pre chilling coolers and the contents that go into them, but if you have a large cooler, it's cheaper to buy dry ice from Publix @1.50/lb than it is to buy a bunch of ice, drain and then fill up with more ice. If you need to get as much longevity out of your ice as possible, buy a large cooler, pre-chill with ample dry ice and pack it with as much ice and pre-chilled products as possible. These days, almost all of these coolers are close enough to being the same as each other. If you're worried about day 5 vs day 6, buy the cheaper cooler and buy a chunk of dry ice. You don't need an entire block, I just went that route because mine was so large, and the temps so extreme.

I turn the dial a little more, it'll make ice. My primary use is for camping, but it also is our emergency fridge during power outages caused by tropical storms and hurricanes. Some of us believe that if you can just go down the street to pickup a second bag of ice you're not really camping yet. 5 days without human contact is an average excursion, short for some. Usually you need powered refrigeration or chucking dry-ice in to keep food cold between ice stations.

My results with grizzly coolers have been great! In addition to keeping ice longer than my buddy’s yeti my grizzly has a LIFETIME warranty with replaceable latches for when the rubber rips. All rubber exposed to the sun will eventually wear out, I had a set to wear out and grizzly sent me five latches free of charge. The rubber feet on the bottom prevents it from sliding all over the back of my truck too. To each their own but I’ll be a grizzly customer for life since my cooler will keep ice for a week straight with no problem!

Pro tip, when using ANY cooler with beverages. 1st, place the beverages the bottom of said cooler. 2nd, place ice on top of beverages to cover. 3rd, fill cooler with as much water to bring water level within an inch of cooler top rail. This procedure ensures ice cold beverages, probably not for 5 days but how often do you need beverages cold for 5 days in a row

Well no, in reality you wont open your cooler just once a day and you wont be filling it strictly with prechilled items. What this test comes down to is that, assuming a linear model of melt vs time, the rotomolded coolers keep ice twice as long. That means that if youre in conditions where your ice may last just 6 hrs in a rubbermaid, itll go for 12 in one of the rotomolded coolers. May or may not be important for you.

Money is not the issue and 4 -5 days is nothing try 20 when it's over 100 ever day. Cold for as long as possible is the issue. Take an 18 day trip down the Colorado River in July when temps are 105 every single day. You need the best. Build the ice up in an ice house over 10 days before leaving. Load vacuum sealed foods, more water, you want a solid block of ice with sealed frozen foods in the block. Leave a small amount of space for dry ice on top. Seal the cooler. Some of our coolers don't get opened until the second week of the trip. Always drain the water off the ice. Water sloshing around in the cooler generates energy and will melt ice faster then the air that gets in when drained. Think this stuff doesn't matter, what's an ice cold beer worth with a steak dinner 2 weeks after launching when it's 105. We pay big money for these coolers and for good reason.

The larger the ice is the longer it keeps. Crushed ice is colder because it has a total higher surface area than cubed. However, crushed iced melts more quickly. This may be why the orca cooler seemed to keep so long as it looks like the ice cubes are larger

This is a great video. If I can suggest one more test...tip it over while there is water in it. Many reviews I've read about the igloo, is it leaks if it tips over. I would like to see what coolers retain water when tipped. Thanks again for the awesome video. I actually bought the igloo sportsman 20 and very happy so far.

Just one time I want to see how an old steel Coleman does in one of these challenges against all these $500 coolers. You can get a brand new one in stainless for less than 1/3 of the price, I guarantee it will hold it's own, and it's got a bottle opener on the side.

Great test, too bad the coolers get different shading from the trees making the results questionable. At the very start of the video you can see the coolers on the right are shadowed and the ones on the left aren't. In the final results, the coolers on the right (shaded side) in general did better than the coolers on the left (unshaded side).

High end coolers with lid seals and strap latches are for mounting on top of vehicles or in back of pickup trucks. The seals prevent air circulation and melted ice water from sloshing out. They might also prevent food odors from attracting critters. Otherwise, a the red rubbermaid is good enough for most situations. Cover it with a $1 space blanket to keep ice a day longer. As an aside, surprised Tesla has not yet marketed a limited edition $1000 red cooler for their fan boys.

Yes Ice with water is often colder than just ice alone, so temps can actually go down on 2nd and third days. Leaching the water in seems the route to go if not replacing ice as you go.

Thing is, you are going to use up what ever food is in the cooler in less than 2 days. So you can just get more ice when you get more food. I would guess most people that buy Yetis don't use then more than a day, they just get them to show off.
@icedink87
@icedink87 8 жыл бұрын
Well if you use the cooler every day you save money in the long run. In theory you buy a bag of ice every 5 days instead of every day. My boring old colman lasts about 4 days and the yeti lasts 5 so if i save like $10 a month on ice it will take 2 years to pay for itself. Not worth it in my opinion

Not always. I'm part of a (large) group that camps for a week or two at a time, and often have frozen foods for a significant portion of that time (frequently prepared in advance and frozen meals). Only having to do an ice run once or twice during that time can be a major advantage.

This is really useful and for those that point out lack of perfection, do bear in mind this review given FOR FREE. The review is a great start to discussion on coolers. For example, what about the other features? I think WHEELS is a huge part of the deal, and many, maybe most do not have wheels. Watch your back without wheels and I don't care how strong you are, or think you are, carrying one of these fully loaded is not way to prove it, just a good way to get hurt. How about trays and partitions? That can matter a whole lot. And empty weight, let's say you are only going out for the day, any cooler can handle that so why not use the lightest cooler, with wheels? And don't forget price, why pay for more than you need?

when I go camping for a weekend Friday-Sunday, I put my food in a Coleman extreme 70 quart, and my drinks in another ice chest. Keep the cooler in the shade and don't open it that much only when getting food for lunch dinner it will keep the ice for the whole trip. No need for a $400 yeti!

I have a Siberian cooler. It works fantastic. But keep this in mind. If the weather is hot and your family is drinking a lot, and you have to add more drinks to the cooler that aren’t PRE-CHILLED (warm or room temp), you WILL be adding more ice. When you add in warm cans or bottles, you will be melting your ice at a much faster rate. If you can, add them early in the morning, when the drinks have cooled to the outside cooler temps. The more expensive coolers not only hold ice longer but they are built to be more durable.

Went on a 3 day fishing trip and spent nearly $40 on ice refilling “cheap” coolers. The average weekender douche that “has to have” a yeti to keep their beer cold is well... a douche, but if used regularly for camping, fishing, and keeping other game cold I could see the practicality of spending up for a cooler. It would eventually pay for itself.

Couple questions: did you ever record the temperatures of the exteriors of the ice chests and how much difference the color makes? It seems to me that although nice appearing a dark colored cooler would be defeating the purpose? Have you compared the Cabelas brand ice chests? Also anyone tested a plane non plastic Styrofoam ice chest? When I was a kid we took an 18 day private airplane trip from Seattle clear to the Arctic Ocean and Yukon Territories along with two other private planes. Weight was of course of paramount concern so my father bought two (likely) 50qt plain Styrofoam coolers, pre-froze everything, put down some newspaper and 5lbs of dry ice (frozen Co2) and sealed them with duct tape and never opened the second cooler until day 11. Everything was still frozen solid! As we used up the food we just gave the coolers to some of the local people. Over the years I saw my father do this many times on different trips and once the cooler had served it's purpose he always gifted them to someone along the way. So yes YETI'S are really nice quality, along with most of these new generation of ice chests. But $400-800 for a plastic molded, Styrofoam injected ice chest. Seems a tad excessive. Personally it seems to me a bit foolish to waste your money on things like this when you can more wisely invest your money in wine, woman, and song!

Doesn't the fact that the coolers are of Different Capacity, therefore, different Thermal Mass once fully loaded with Ice, going to give very different results. IE: The larger units will preform much better Anyway, great test, you have them outside in real conditions Most people in the real world would only load them with 2 or 3 frozen 2 ltr bottles or 2 bags of ice, then 48 cans :)

Awesome review and very interesting to see. Seems some perform marginally better then others. But a huge factor for me is warranty. Which ones offer lifetime warranty? Cause that should sway buyers a great deal if the top runners are within 10% performance of each other. I know yeti offers a short warranty at 5 years.

So the $20 cooler went 3+ days and the Dyske went 8.5 days ($379) Really what I get from this is buy the cheapest cooler, because 1. I seldom use a cooler for more than 3 days 2. I can spend the other 359 on beer and ice and 3 nobody is going to steal a $20 cooler and if they do I'm not going to cry about it.
