Ohhh I'll have to check out your video about your issues with contemporary German lit!! I don't know much about German lit so I'm always eager to learn. (Only recently I realized what you mentioned re what is considered German lit; at first I was very confused when Swiss or Austrian authors were considered "German lit", haha) As you know, I've read and loved Faust, haha, but I'll add everything else to my tbr! My German is not even kid lit level yet, so I'll have to settle for the translations, though.

Good point about the German *language* area, I really enjoy the subtle cultural diversity that can be found in it nonetheless :) I really should check our Der Goldne Topf of you say it's your favourite! I was *obsessed* with Kabale and Liebe and Ferdinand and Luise's love story as a teenager but I wonder if I wouldn't be rolling my eyes the whole time if I re-read it now. I guess there's only one way to find out :D Looking forward to your next German Lit video :)

I was never overly invested in the love story, I think. Maybe because I read the play very quickly and therefore it turned sour pretty fast. 😆 I do think that it works extremely well on the level of the romantic tragedy, though. I like how Ferdinand is pictured as both the cause of Luise's ruin and as a sympathetic and even loveable character at the same time, and how he isn't demonised even while is class *is*.

@@evastrange I think I was too much of a teenager to get the nuance and *real* tragedy of their relationship :P That is such a good point. I also remember him feeling trapped by his class. Hmmm, maybe I *should* read it again :D

I was a student of Germanistik at uni, and I cannot believe we didn't have to read a single one of these--even Faust. Such a huge gap in my German literary knowledge. I'll definitely be putting Faust on my TBR for the year, and I'm curious about Der goldne Topf as well. I've read other Hoffmann stories, but not that one... On the topic of German literature, are there any novels you do like (even if they aren't your favorites)? I've really enjoyed novels by Robert Musil for instance. Great, thoughtful bookish content, as always! :))

by coincidence I bought a book titled "The Best Tales of Hoffmann" the other day on ebay, which includes the stories you mentioned, so I'll be reading them... soon(ish)

😀 I recommend you start with The Golden Pot, obviously. I think it's more simply enjoyable than the more famous Sandman(n)
