I was in LA in 2004 then 2016 and the fire was always a big fear specially up in the hills. Friends from Topanga Canyon had to evacuate this time. Very worried about them and their family. Can't imagine how difficult this is.

I could see the Santa Anas getting worse over the decades. In the 60s, 70s, they use to be only in October, early November. It's only going to get worse. Homes in the UK are built out of bricks and mortar because we’re (at least here in Scotland) as far north as Newfoundland. Its freezing. Insulation purposes. New fires spread EXPONENTIALLY especially with wind. SPEED is key. An OLD guy saved his house with a fire hose. Houses don't burn that easily. There are a few vulnerable parts but you just protect that with your garden hose. We should train people in the neighborhoods. Neighbors are ON-SITE and there long before crews get there. Large fires can burn for hours before crews get there.

What's sad is even if these homes had measures in place to protect people's most valuable belongings it didn't matter. Most measures have a time limit before the blazing inferno overcomes them. It took way too long for fires to be smothered.

Winter is basically a uk summer in America so not enough rain to hold off the element of fire, plus that whole area was in a drought up until 2 years ago when it rained a lot which made rapid growth of shrubs, trees and grass which is perfect fuel for the fire. Which is why you see the fire you see today

California is warm all year round. They haven't had any rain since October. The ground was like tinder ready for one spark to light it. They just got out of a severe drought early last year but have had almost no rain since then.

Rebuild smaller, re-evaluate value systems, focus on community and people and safety, and growing food in communities, and planet health, and give up the chase for stuff and distraction....make sacrifices, scale back and be grateful and content with less. It is time for people to make sacrifices and live simply so we may simply survive. This is not going away, and there is another trauma, just around the corner, worldwide. It could be you next.
