The world is so full of lost treasures that new discoveries are being found every year. Today we look at five recent discoveries including over 650 ancient Roman silver coins, textile dyed with royal purple from 3,000 years ago, famous pirate Captain Every’s lost treasure, one of the largest caches of ancient Roman gold coins ever found, and the San Jose Galleon, the most valuable sunken wreck of all time!

I live on the Treasure Coast of Florida and one of my friends is a professional treasure diver. Every time a tropical storm or hurricane comes through, so many new discovers are uncovered. It’s pretty damn cool.

I live in Jacksonville and always wondered if pirates or the Spanish ever cam up the St. John's and buried treasure around Jacksonville/ St. Augustine area. I've had the treasure seeking bug after living in the Florida keys for 20 years and searching for shipwrecks. I actually went out and searched/ marked submerged or derelict vessels after hurricane Irma. I'm in the process of getting my non profit ocean cleanup and conservation group up and running and if I find artifacts or treasure in the process that would be cool.

Who gets to keep the treasure? Do the government claim it and give a finders fee or do they take the whole lot.... or do the people that find the treasure get to keep it all? If you have any answers to these questions it would be much appreciated..... cheers.

The purple dye was one of the things that made the Phoenician city of Tyre wealthy. A contemporary account comments that the price of that wealth was having to breathe the air. All those dead snails in the hot sun. . .

Ew. I never considered this consequence of the textile industry of ancient times… Though I can’t imagine the smell that rotting snails would have… I’m sure it was incredibly unpleasant. Especially if the necessary amount of snails needed was in the hundreds of thousands…yuk.

I suspect that many old treasuries that are found go unreported. If I found a ton of gold, I wouldn’t tell a soul! Just for the government to confiscate it, or tax the crap out of it. Too many stories of such treasures lost to crooked governments, or some insurance claim that returns it to the owner who lost it 600 years ago.

some guy walked past a dead snail in the sun and saw that the slime oozing out of it had changed purple. this person was able to do some basic critical thinking and smashed another snail and placed it in the sun, getting the same result. centuries of trial and error ironed out the kinks, and history was left with a profitable method of producing a rare color of pigment. fascinating, yes, but also perfectly reasonable.

@@nurichniemandsonst9639 That will be a whole can of worms, Spain has a claim as it was their ship, the Colombia has a claim as it is in their territory, but as the ship sailed from Panama its unlikely the cargo originated in Colombia so other Central and South American nations could make a claim as the gold probably came from their nations territory. Overall seems a bit of a mess though as Colombia controls the physical area they seem to have an advantage on claims.

Yeah...if I’m metal detecting and find a hoard of silver, gold, or other precious valuables; you can bet I’m not letting anyone know. The shit part for random people who find buried treasure is that once they let people know, the treasure is stolen from them and not single payment is made to the person who found it. With the pirate treasure, I gotta take a closer look at that, since I lived in Middletown RI, for about a year, years before this finding happened. That said, I doubt it was found on a farm, unless it is a fish farm, or a spot in someone's backyard where they grow some crops for personal consumption. Middletown is one of three towns on a rather small island, inside of the bay that nearly divides the state in half.

The purple cloth of a king found in a slag heap? The ancient Egyptians used purple dyes from molluscs. I'm not sure this find actually confirms king David's existence, although he probably did exist. In ancient Egypt a time came when non royals were allowed to wear purple, perhaps others were allowed in Israel or the wearer being a foreign visitor? A lot of conclusions based on little evidence with this find i believe.

Well, when Jesus was born, Emperor Tiberius thought, "Wow, this could be big", so with his advisors they projected that well into the future, the corner of the Empire that is the U.K. today would eventually end up enjoying some fleeting supremacy, and that they'd also need to project the migration of post Empirical peoples, and how their language would morph and evolve. That's how they came up with "Before Christ." Then they had everyone in the Roman Empire bring in all their coins so they could be re-stamped with the correct date. I'm surprised you didn't hear about that, it was in all the news scrolls.

As he got change, he dropped it in the driver's door through the window slot. After he was drafted in 1942, grandma sold the car without his knowledge. My favorite treasure was the one found by that Australian guy... and promptly taken from him by the Australian Government. You just can't quite leave behind that criminal past, can ya Australia? -_-

I would love to see that 17 billion dollar treasure spread around to all the countries museums that have a claim to it, so everyone can see some of the parts of this treasure.

>Why was the jug burried. This was like around the late bronze age collapse. Shit was utter chaos during that time constant war/attacks. Throwing coins in a jug and digging a shallow hideyhole hastily makes perfect sense.

To think that there's over $17B worth of gold treasure on a ship back in the day, you could literally be a billionaire pirate by today's standards...despite not being called that...and put that into context, a pirate can actually buy an island officially and legally from any country and build Treasure Island!

If I was Spain I would have just sat down and kept quiet. That'd be like if something went missing from the British Museum and England said they want their stuff back 😅

Nit: Colonial country rarely literally steal things. It is usually a combination of robbery, plunder, scam, unequal trade and spoil of war. And depending on the exact nature, that might affect how they should be treated. For starters, let's consider scam and unequal trade. The difference here, IMO, is whether or not the terms of an exchange is carried out. If it isn't, it's a scam. If it is, then it's unequal trade. Here I mean stuff like shiny glass for gold. IMO, scam should be treated the same as "stolen" and profit reverted. But unequal trade, by our standard, is still fair trade in the eye of the supposed victim. As such, I do believe "unequal trade" should be upheld, as they are only unequal in our eyes. Robbery and plunder should also be reverted like "stolen." This then leads to the question of, what is the difference between plunder versus spoil of war? For the most part, I'd say by how the battle, if any, started and how it progressed. For the most extreme examples, attack on a pure civilian settlement for no cause is simple plunder. On the other end, if the natives attacked first and the colonials won, counter attacked and won again, that is most likely spoil of war. The stuff in the middle would be more murky. Things would be simpler if there were formal declaration of war but as the colonials rarely thought the natives as actual nations, that's rarely if ever done. So it will probably go roughly by the degree of military involvement. And with that, we come to the most difficult part of this, what do we do with spoil of war. A lot of people advocate for those too to be reverted as that would be the "right" thing to do, and intuitively, this is how I *feel* as well. But this does not pass intellectual validation in terms of standardization of practice. There are a lot of things that were the spoil of war, including many nations and domain thereof. We aren't seeking for all of those to be returned, so why these specifically? It feels like the decision is more based on whether it is easy and feels right than whether it is right. And... I can't agree with such hypocritical practices. Besides that, the modern view on spoil of war is very... modern. For the longest time, it is was accepted as a normal course of action. In fact, in many ways it is still practiced as such. It's just that today, instead of direct plunder of valuables, it is often more in the form of political influence. Now, in the event of high profile artifact where we know which form of "transaction" took place, we can act accordingly. But barring that, given all of the above, I would only advocate for return of about 70% of the item, favoring those with higher culture value over monetary value. So statues, tablets and other artifacts etc over simple gold.
