I’m a year late, but one thing I definitely think contributed, as much of a cop out as this may sound like, is Hugh Jackman not returning, so I’m glad you at least brought that up at the end. As you said, we have such easily accessible and readily available info, and it’s no secret that Jackman carried these films to a degree. You have a movie like Apocalypse that lets people down, but you can still easily google “is Hugh Jackman in....?”. When the answer is no, and Wolverine is clearly the most popular X-Men for casual viewers, it makes sense that they wouldn’t care to get their asses in the seats lol. I don’t think it’s the Number 1 reason or anything, but I definitely think him not being in it killed any anticipation for casual viewers.

It's biggest failure was being in the care of Fox. As soon as they did Wolvernie origins movie the sequels never blended well because of erasing or alternating story lines. It's like fox never fully had faith in this franchise

The reason the X-men franchise has always been my favorite superhero series is because they have heart. Unlike the MCU marvel movies, I feel like X-men always dealt with more realistic themes and I always thought professor x was a great and inspiring character; apparently he sucks in this movie too. Great points, I especially like point number 2. Well said, what is this movies reason to exist?

I think the lack of Hugh Jackman was a big factor. If you look at the box office returns for all of the movies, the ones he doesn't prominently feature in (barring Deadpool) didn't tend to do as well.

Not just Hugh Jackman, but the rest of the old cast. McKellan, Stewart, Berry, and others were firmly identified in people's minds as the cinematic X-Men. A lot of people just never took to the new cast.

Thing is even though i love sophie turner they did not develop characters so people can be invested in the story and the characters. Hopefully marvel studios does the X-Men justice.

Cody you pretty much summed up why this X-Men film failed word perfect mate, you talk sense & give a clear, concise explanation & credit to you buddy your on the right path. I'll add a couple other points, one being it should have been R rated & gone batshit hardcore. If Fox knew this was to be there last X-Men movie I'd gone balls out & unleashed the Phoenix & showed some brutal R rated kills, Logan & Deadpool proved that mature ratings make there money back & Ijust found that this film played it safe & by the numbers. I also think audiences haven't endured Jean Grey as a character in a few movies, we had one film beforehand with Jean & then BOOM she's Dark Phoenix in this, there's no character arc build up so how can we invest emotionally in a character we hardly know? It's the ole Batman vs Superman Dawn Of Justice again rushed that with Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex & Doomsday & didn't build up those characters story's & look how that turned out.

A lot of blame to go around but I don't think blaming Disney is warranted. Been a diehard fan of the X-Men since the 1980's and even I was getting bored with what we've seen (outside of Logan and DP). FOX began squandering the franchise long before the House of Mouse bought them. I agree with your other points though.

Well the main reason is that MCU is so so big, that people right now don't care for anything comics related that is not in the MCU. Also I think the feeling for Apocalypse that was not a exciting X-Men movie was a big part. The only reason we went to watch X-Men: Dark Phoenix is for 2 reasons, 1.- We are huge X-Men fans since the first movie and the 2.- We like Sophie Turner because is pretty for us. That is all. I think this was a bad end to end. But the adventures is concluded. Just visit your favorite X-Men movie, like for me the first one, enjoy it and that is all.

Just watched it and yeah,it was one of the laziest scripts. The rehashed cut in half jokes,the slow mo again, the dull villan, I'd seen it before and for my money, the first one worked because the slapdash aspects were still linked to the origin story and the love story between Wade and Vanessa.I liked XForce and the action but it didn't work for me much.

Yes, I agree with you that the Disney purchase of Fox was a big reason why this movie failed. Once the purchase was done, all I saw on social media were threads and posts on how Kevin Feige can make the X-Men better, especially after Apocalypse failed to draw in the money. I believe that they rushed this production instead of taking their time. It would have been better to tell this story in 2 movies instead of one.

It’s not as bad as the critics and some people are making it out to be and it’s not the worst x-men film... HOWEVER, it’s still disappointing, mediocre, incomplete, and should of been better like most of these X-Men films with the exception of a few. Despite being disappointed, I’m not mad or feel ripped off for seeing it in the theater because I was there in 2000 seeing the first movie and 19 years later I felt obligated to see the final movie of the franchise in the theater since I’ve stuck with this Fox series since the beginning. It’s crazy to think that I was 8 years old when I saw the original in the theater and now I’m 27 seeing Dark Phoenix. Didn’t see all the movies in the theater, but I’m extremely grateful I saw the original trilogy and the perfect ones like X2 and Logan. Once again I didn’t hate it, but I can understand if people do like the die hard X-Men fans who grew up with the comics. I’m not a die hard. I only grew up with the animated series. Sometimes I feel I should hate it because X-Men is my third favorite superhero/comic book franchise and I do have my problems with these movies, but I don’t lol. 😅 It’s really the end of an era. Let’s see what Marvel/Disney does...

we reviewed this on Sunday, and i was pretty disappointed. I'm a big fan of Jean Grey and was super excited when they said they were doing dark phoenix. I was extremely disappointed mainly on how they failed to use Jean Grey in this film the way they could have. She had an insane amount of power and i feel like they barely showed it. this being said it isn't an awful film, it had its moments.

Honestly? Dark Phoenix wasn't the best. Not by far. You know what didn't help? Captain Marvel and Endgame. It's like last year: Ant-man and the Wasp was a damn good movie, but after having Black Panther and Infinity War earlier in the year, it felt a little... less. At the same time, Ant-man and the Wasp was still easily the #3 superhero movie of the year... I didn't see Venom and Aquaman until a few weeks ago. Now obviously, Far From Home is gonna top Dark Phoenix, but it hasn't yet.

I don't pay that much attention to reviews because most of the time they are just opinions and in some cases biased opinions. The movie flopped (like so many others) because of high expectations and accumulated hype. Nowadays people have a lot of information about movies that it creates a lot of the high expectations and the hype. Just like you mentioned, back in 70's, 80's and 90's we didn't have that, we would get a poster, a small trailer and a little bit of information about the plot and that was it. Also another thing, the actors, people get so crazy about them, oh this actor is going to be in the movies, oh it's going to be great, oh it's going to s**k, oh I don't like him/her, oh i love him/her, it's bothersome! Apocalypse was good and so is this one, they were fun and entertaining movies. Maybe it's just me, but I just sit down with a soda and some popcorn and enjoy the movie, if it's bad or good, well, is my time and money!

Hey Cody I kinda disagree with number 1. I think the biggest reason it bombed was because it wasn't enough Recognizable actors in it. Don't get me wrong Sophie Turner and J Law have a pretty decent fan base but they took a bit hit to their fame from recent actions. Jlaw took a big dip in her fame due to her comments about beating up a drunk guy and her ambitious movie choices that casual fans likely wouldn't understand like Red Sparrow or Mother. Sophie Turner also took a big hot to her fanbase due to how poor everyone pervieved the final season of game of thrones. If this movie had more recognizable actors like a Hugh Jackman or even a Halle Berry...alot of casual fans wouldn't have cared. Just went anyway. Think about it. Resident Evil profits in box office almost every time it comes in box office despite being blasted by critics but why does it make so much money? Milla Jovovich. Same deal with Fast and the Furious.

Either Days of Future Past or Logan should have been the end of the Fox X-Men film series ending with either the extinction of mutant kind being stopped through Mystique not killing Trask which causes Trask to be imprisoned for his crimes, the government shutting down the Sentinels and with Trask not being killed by Mystique like in the previous timeline the Sentinels don't take over and drive mutants to extinction like they do in the future. Or Logan where Wolverine and Xavier die but Laura and the other mutant kids get to safety and despite Dr Rice trying to wipe mutants out he failed and Laura and the other kids become the next generation of mutants.

Well, that movie's money went down the toilet after looking at the opening box office. Good luck Disney, to answer your question at the end of your review of this movie about if they should bring X-Men or X-Unit or whatever the hell Disney PR is going to call it (just call it X-Men Disney and stop talking about how hard it is to market the name) to the MCU and my answer to that is no. Because it would be hard to juggle two groups (The Avengers and X-Men) in the MCU so they should keep them apart.

Yes, bad story telling and we've seen it all before, but more importantly people are getting burned out on these super hero movies. The special effects are starting to lose their wow factor. Also, obvious feminism and SJW bullshit is being forced down people's throats... people are getting turned off by this stuff. I will not be seeing this movie. Also, many people I know are changing their minds about Avengers EndGame... it wasn't really that good. You have all these YT fan boys/girls out there falling all over themselves saying it was the best MCU movie ever... most have ulterior motives, an axe to grind and/or sponsors to please. Winter Soldier was the best MCU movie.
