Availability is BS. Rolex made close to a million watches annually. I would guess that 3/4 of it is sitting on the grey dealer shelves, sold to them by the courtesy of the ADs
@loltanios3 жыл бұрын
You don't think demand for Rolex exceeds a million watches annually? I don't know if Rolex purposefully makes fewer than demand but this is the only reason for availability issues.
@djjr98033 жыл бұрын
The reasons is demand. Rolex manufactures in a few sites in Switzerland. Their footprint cannot keep up with worldwide demand. 10-15 years ago China wasn't a market for luxury watches. Now it is a huge market and Rolex never expanded their production accordingly. So while they make a million (all models, by the way) you are looking at potential buyers a factor of 10 more than their production. That's why prices have been skyrocketing.

I feel like the thing that annoys most people is the situation surrounding Rolex watches (both at ADs and secondary market). As products their watches aren’t bad at all and they’re quite sturdy, but having to “convince” your AD that you’re worthy of a Rolex is just wrong and drives people towards grey market and potentially fake watches. The sad thing is that other brands, notably AP and Richard Mille, are starting to use their “hot models” as bargaining chips to sell you a Code 11.59, etc.

Thanks for another enjoyable review. I have become a real Omega fan over the last few years. Aside from design, movement and quality, the boutique treats me nicely and watches are available, sometimes after a wait for special editions. I prefer the gold dial version with black sub dials as it’s more legible and more striking. My favourite is the 50th anniversary with its red bezel and special caseback details. I agree about the risk of being robbed. Rolex has lost its way. It was an aspirational luxury item once. To many it remains so. I know it is popular to hate on Rolex, but being honest almost everything about the Rolex is superior to the Omega ( I own a 3861 but ss sapphire sandwich ) Omega bracelet not as structurally integral + no quick adjustment. The links are also rounded so the watch doesn’t freely slide on your wrist like the Rolex’s flat inner links. The dimensions - The Daytona is over 1mm thiner despite being automatic and with a column wheel and a vertical clutch to boot. Actuating the Chronograph is night and day with the Daytona Water resistance - The omega has half the water resistance at just 50M and the brand themselves don’t even recommend bringing the watch for surface swimming. Accuracy - The 3861 ( at least mine) , runs at about + 5 compared to most Rolex’s now staying at +-2 The bezel - There is no reason to have an aluminum bezel on any speedmaster besides maybe the hesalite for full originality. Residual value - I don’t even need to go there. The Omega is wonderful and I wish it was better than Rolex, but for now it sure as hell isn’t Update: The 3861 speedmasters now all have quick adjustment.

@GreaterBayArea Hero - Unfortunately, I don’t believe the Omegas would be more desirable than Rolex with extra features. Omega already makes better watches than Rolex for the most part imo so it has little to do with that for a lot of buyers. It is surely more about ignorance and “image” for the overwhelming majority of Rolex buyers. Most people in the market for a luxury watch at that price point know little if anything about watches and in many cases aren’t interested to know. All they want is to buy a watch to flex, they have heard about Rolex (who hasn’t?), wrongly think it is the best and then buy the things like kids in a sweet shop. With so much skin in the game or having saved all those pennies to buy a watch they cannot really afford they then spend time on the internet trying to validate their ignorant decisions. Want a beautiful watch with an almost unmatchable history/pedigree get an Omega, want an “image” (for better or worse) get a Rolex.

I think a good example of people blithely following Rolex and their motivational cognition in relation thereto is the GS spring drive. Tell me with a straight face that those would not be sold out now if they had Rolex on the dial and would not be hailed as the greatest development in watchmaking period?? Fanboys of the brand get excited over a 1mm case increment or a bezel colour change which is quite sad really, particularly when these same people dismiss or deride superior achievements/offerings from alternative brands with more impressive history and greater historical contributions in the field..

Price: Daytona MUCH more valuable 4. Movement: Horses for courses, but let's be honest, Rolex also make robust workhorses. 5. Danger: Daytona MUCH more recognized (that's part of the appeal - let's not lie), and more VALUABLE. I'll add one more... 6. Investment: I would be much more comfortable joining a waitlist for the Daytona, knowing that when it is allocated ...my money is SAFE. Too impatient? Buy the Daytona on secondary market while you wait for your allocation - then sell the first, and you will likely get all your money back. Objectively, the Sedna is the Daytona's bitch. On a more serious note, you forgot to address the size. The Daytona is SMALL if you have a 7+inch wrist. In fact, it's become something of a unisex watch. Too small for me, with my 8 inch wrist.

Also for me there is only one way to go with gold and thats polished. Gold is for showing not for hiding it under a brushed finished.

Found this comment really insightful. I prefer Omega over Rolex personally. That said, Mechanical watches aren't for everyone. Automatic is alot more practical for everyday use.

@@JonathanMartinez-gs7prThe only thing is it abstracts the view of the movement, which doesn't matter for Daytona as it's solid case back.

I own Sedna Gold Moonwatch and it is an amazing watch, but you are so biased and so wrong about Rolex. I love Omega and I don't have to hate on Rolex, I love them both. Daytona has its perks, especially the caliber 4130, which is the best automatic chronograph in the world. The reason why Rolex is not available is because the demand for Rolex is probably 20 times higher than for Omega. Today even platinum Day-Dates are selling for premium and just 2 years ago pre-owned platinum Day-Dates were selling for less than of half retail. Omega is available because the demands is not there, which I think is a good thing, because I just walked into the boutique and bought my new Speedy Sedna gold and I even got a very decent discount. Jaquet Droz is also available in watch stores, it means only one thing, no demand... Now as the owner of Sedna gold Moonwatch, I love the watch, but I don't understand Omega. Why didn't they make a simple 1-2mm quick adjustment on the bracelet? Why is the bezel not from ceramic like on the Moonshine anniversary piece? Why is the watch delivered without a wallet for the warranty cards? All these things are peanuts in costs, but completely terrible for the premium buying experience. Omega unfortunately has a terrible network of ADs, it is so bad it's not even worth mentioning....I think Omega can really become a real competition to Rolex, but they need to stop employing people who lick their balls and get people who give them sold and hard critiques so they can improve. Your bias review didn't do any favour to Omega. BTW, Rose Gold Daytona 116505 looks best with baguettes dial and now with the new meteorite dial and I think very soon Rolex will bring ceramic bezel to the remaining Daytona line-up (116505, 508, 509 and 523)... The fact that sundials are not aligned is a tiny tiny issue, Patek has the same "issue" with much higher complications like 5270, but this is due to the design of the caliber and the size of the dial. If Rolex would move up Daytona to 41mm those subdials would be be aligned (maybe that's what will happen), but in 2025 for the 60 anniversary.

I find a comparison between these two models ridiculous. They represent something completely different. But if you've already started, here's my antithesis. What speaks against the Speedmaster: consistent model policy of the Daytona. The more attractive movement, 44 jewels against 27 jewels. Flatter design. Better workmanship. Higher value retention. No matter where in the world, in an emergency can be sold faster without major losses. No shareholders in the background diluting the brand. cooler image. Nevertheless, I really like the Speedmaster and I will buy the new model soon. Cheers
@robert-janbroer89362 жыл бұрын
A better workmanship of what? Not sure I agree. Also, more jewels doesn’t equal a better movement. It can also be a construction issue, that it simply requires more jewels. To each his or her own. Resale retention is only important if you can’t afford such a watch ;-)

I am sorry, guys, but these reasons are fake reasons. You cannot tell me that you are going to pay the same amount or more for a gold speedmaster. You have both in your hands and you must admit that the sheer physical dominance and presence of the Daytona and Rolex version of rosegold trumps the Omega by far.

Hmmm, no it doesn't. And we own a few gold Speedmasters here.

@@FratelloMagazine RJ, Karina, the 40mm size and 12mm or so height of the Daytona are timeless measurements for a dress(ier) watch in full gold. I bet you that the Daytona would even fit Karina while the Speedmaster would simply be too big. With these timeless measurements plus an Oysterbracelet that is neither too sporty nor too dressy Rolex is able to create a sportier stainless steel version of the Daytona as well as dressier watch versions in white, yellow and everose gold. On top of that you get a variety of dial versions on the full gold Daytonas that caters to every possible taste a watch collector and wearer may have when looking for a dressier watch in precious metals. What do you get from Omega ? 1 full gold version (I am ignoring the Canopa gold version because it is even 10k more expensive) with the same basic setup as the stainless steel Speedmaster but a significantly less eligible dial. It is basically a beefed up sports watch at too big dimensions trying to be dressier by using precious metal. It just doesn't work and fit together. And I simply cannot believe that a watch fan that has 40k Euro to spend would prefer a full gold Speedmaster over a Daytona. No way (of course, there are exceptions but I am sure they are very rare).

Availability doesn't make it a better watch, more people love the Daytona, the proportions and wear WR area better in every way. Price of the Omega being low also taking 40 percent hit soon as you wear it, not a pro either. Also people wear Fake Rolex, who cares I don't buy my Rolex watches to care who is looking at my wrist or what on other peoples wrist.

Both are beautiful and great watches, tecnically Moonwatch can't be better than a Daytona for 3 reasons... 1) The Daytona it's a much more robust watch 2)It's waterproof 10bar (so i can have a shower, swim with it, and wash it...so i can have a real normal life with it) 3) It's Automatic. Cheers from Italy
