In the early days of Pink Floyd, I never really took to them. When David Gilmour joined and took them in a different direction, together with Roger Water's poetic genius, culminating in Dark Side of the Moon, I was hooked, and have been ever since. Davids guitar style is unique, he makes every note count. My all time favourite band.

True. But give Rick Wright some credit for unusual keyboard sounds & a voice that blended well with Dave's.

Syd was the main writer, singer and lead guitarist. Gilmour's arrival changed the dynamics of the group.

What about Neil Peart taking over for John Rutsey with RUSH?
@paulmadrygaКүн бұрын
That's the first one I thought of. Rutsey was an excellent drummer in a talented Zeppelin-esque 3-piece band - that band became a completely different group with Peart at the kit.

Indeed… rather ignorant of the poster to leave off the best example.

Long time Genesis fan here. OG fans need to finally accept that Peter was done with prog rock, done with being confined to a group. He had his own vision, his own ambitions of what he wanted to do artistically. Even though his first marriage ended in divorce, his first wife and child almost died in childbirth around the time of him leaving Genesis. There was drama coming from all sides. Everything worked out in the end. Both Peter and Genesis are considered legends. Can't take that away from them.

Better for Genesis. Peter Gabriel is better as a solo artist then the band he left.

I think people need to be more open minded when it comes to replacement players, especially when they are stepping in for someone who has passed away. In most cases, they are exceptional musicians who are probably just as big a fan of the person they are replacing as you are and are absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to step in and play with the band they love.

Bon Scott passes & Brian Johnson too over & AC/DC became huge as Back in Black is a masterpiece. 🎸😎
@pathfinder127314 сағат бұрын
Yes, their music improved but Bon was a way better vocalist and front man.

@ I agree. Johnson's voice was not great but it fit.

The ignorance of the know-nothings not to have even have a picture of Rush, of Peart vs Rutsey. And Andy Summers changed The Police completely. You can hear on early recordings that Henri Padovani was a great if primitive player, but Summers added artistry and fluidity. Who else could have made "Message In A Bottle" sound live waves crashing on a shore?

One of the best, but not the greatest. What really stands out for me is that he would be as identifiable and sound as good if he were playing a $50 pawnshop guitar as any high end Strat.

I never got Genesis. They always seemed so pretentious to me. Three different times I gave their entire catalogue a listen and it was just uninspiring and tiresome. Brian Jones was a visionary geinus, Mick Taylor was a great guitar player: only one of them was there for Paint It, Black. Ian Gillan... what can one say?
