Something important to note here; this excercice shows you the 5-stroke roll but ON the beat! Try practicing the same but OFF the beat ;)

Hey what do you mean by playing it to off the beat? I'm unfamiliar with that.. would that be starting with a single hit and then doing a double stroke L-RR-LL instead of the normal LL-RR-L. I totally understand playing on beat like in the video but I can't comprehend playing off beat with this pattern without some type of example lol

I practice it like 2-3 months and my speed is like at 0.46-0.48 sec. I cant do it at higher than 110-120bpm. Is it that hard that I need to develop it 6 months or so? Or am I doing it in a wrong way?

Hey Leyen, To answer that question, we need to know more. What else are you practicing? What's your goal with rudiments? For example, marching band, rock band, jazz band, just fun practice pad etc. It would also be really helpful to see what's happening with your hands and to know how rudiments are fitting in context with your goals and current practice routine.

Niels Myrner thaks for getting back to me, Niels, didnt expect, honestly. Well, my only goal with rudiments is to learn double stroke roll. Actually, I do them because, you know, if you learn drums, you must learn rudiments. I did Stick Control for one month, every day 40-60 min and got to buzz rolls. Then I decided to focus more on rudiments because there more different combinations and this looks more versatile. I do them following "as alan dawson taught..." book. Three rudiments per week, 5 min per rudiment every day. But beside that, double stroke roll almost every day. Heres how my practicing look like: every day 30-40 min on rudiments, then 60 min with Alfred's drum set method book (one day grooves, next day fills, every friday music play along), then, at night, 60 mins with Alfreds snare drum method book (this is more for notation, counting and and rhythm). Im happy with those books and I fill I grow day by day, slowly though. But not with rolls and double strokes. And these are I always wanted to learn the most. And I do not have any certain goals. Im 37 and I just want to play drums for myself, for fun. It was a dream of my childhood :) Ok, I feel like this is more than just a side question on youtube, so Im happy to pay for a consultation, Niels.

Wow Leyen, that’s great! It sounds like you’ve got a balanced routine. Two things-1. A teacher needs to see what’s happening with your hands to help at that level. Maybe you have someone in town where you live? If not, I teach on Skype/Google Hangouts. If lessons are not in the budget, consider filming your hands (just a quick cell phone video nothing fancy) and send me a link. I’ll be able to help more. Contact is in my site nkmdrums.com 2. Double stroke rolls can take a very very long time to learn smoothly. Many drummers never really get them. So keep in mind you’re tackling one of the hardest possible technical challenges!

is that some silencer pad on top of the snare? how you get that?
@nielsmyrner

hey neil, very nice video, but I have one question-- is rebound from the snare drum important? because you have there really fast hands.. or that speed in hands really comes naturally with practicing ?
@nielsmyrner
@nielsmyrner 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Rebound from the snare drum is important but you also have elasticity in your muscles and ligaments. You can play a double stroke roll in the air by exploiting this elasticity, but rebound from the snare and from the wooden drum stick help. The key is to practice in a relaxed way with technique that allows all elements to work together fluidly.

uuhm.. I practice this routine every day and really gets better but I noticed that my left hand is much tenser and slower than my right hand and that bothers me the most, probably because I am a right-hander ?
@nielsmyrner
@nielsmyrner 10 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for asking. Yes, definitely because you are used to using your right hand for everything, it is much more developed. The simple answer to building your left hand is to use it more. Try switching your mouse to left handed, your silverware, everything. Use all of the opportunities in life to develop your coordination. Beyond that, when practicing, you will likely need to spend some extra time on your left hand. The good news is, your right hand already knows how to do it, so you can try to match your left to your right. I hope that is helpful. I had to actually switch my whole drum set to a left handed setup for a few years to bring develop any coordination with my left side... I'm still working on it!
