I think that Andrew (or rewboss by his KZbin name) is always worth watching. He's a Brit living in Germany for I don't know how many years, so he knows what he's talking about. You definitely should see the travel videos on his channel. He's been to places you rarely find in a tourist guide, and his 5-part series about Berlin showed me places I hadn't seen in the 7 years I lived there.

I think the shaking hands thing changed a little since the pandemic. In some of my social groups a tight handshake was king of a mandatory greeting ritual. But since then people have become much more reluctant to do so IMO.

Another thing is the story about to have to take off your shoes when you visit any German at their homes. This actually depends on region and family. In my entire family living in North Rhine-Westphalia nobody would ask a visitor to take off the shoes.

The first time I visited the US (California) back around 2000, the friend I was meeting took me to a pizza place for lunch ... and I asked for cutlery, because I was used to eating my pizza with a fork and knife, as you did here pretty much everywhere back then. (Also in the UK, by the way!) I was given a plastic knife and fork. Big surprise, they were no use at all for cutting up a pizza. Okay then, hands it was, by default. These days, I eat my pizza in slices (and with my hands) even at home. 🙂

If you're meeting a friend at a café and you're running late, just send them an apologetic text and let them know when exactly you'll be there. As long as it doesn't happen every time, nobody will be mad, shit happens.

As a German, I totally agree with rewboss. One clarification on Nr. 1: Most restaurants will wrap leftover food for you to take home if you ask politely, but please NEVER call it a "doggie bag" or "Hundetüte" in Germany. That term isn't commonly used here and thus the restaurant staff might understand it literal, i.e. you imply that you want to use the rest of the meal as dog food. Since pet food is usually not the same quality as food for human consumption (yet alone food prepared by a learned cook in a classy restaurant), this is actually quite insulting for the restaurant staff (especially the cook).

Ritteressen, first time I heard this expression. But some research showed that it's something like Störtebeker's Seefahrergelage which I attended twice many moons ago here at Hamburg. Kind of the North German edition of Ritteressen...

Many things that I see in the various reaction videos actually only apply to Germans. For example, being late. This will not be tolerated by a German. But with a foreigner you tolerate it because he is a foreigner.

Shaking hands is only common between friends. His opinion on this is not surprising. Was that too direct?
