7:40 Invitation in Germany means that the inviter treats the invitees. When you throw a birthday party and invite guests, you entertain them with food. At work you invite them also -- and you don't have to invite them to your home -- for your party (at work, that is) and everybody is happy with a piece of cake. When your colleagues really like you, they may give you a birthday present, but they will not invite you. Invitation, by the way, is a word that US Americans seem to not understand. They might invite you for dinner and go to a restaurant and expect that you pay your own food... 😕 If a German invites you, the German pays.
@franhunne8929
@franhunne8929 20 күн бұрын
I wonder if you might be the one who did not understand. Americans do not make you pay for your own meal - the whole of the bill plus obligatory tip is divided evenly between the participants. Unless someone says it is their treat (which then means they treat you, not you have to cover them). You do not pay just for yourself, letting the bill be split up by the waiter so that everybody pays for their own dish and drinks is too time consuming. And that means, it takes longer to get the next paying customer to a table, and the turnover is very important to American restaurants.

3:25 It might surprise you that opening "all" windows (or at least two to produce an airstream) for a few seconds is actually the most energy efficient/saving method to air the room - in contrast to open up one window just a little bit but for a longer amount of time. You want the CO2 go away and O2 go in without cooling the house (i.e. the walls etc.) down. As long as the walls keep warm, that tiny bit of energy that was actually in the air is neglectible.

They are wrong about Mahlzeit only being used in the Office. In the early 90s there was this Movie "kleines Arschloch" the Protagonist always entered a room saying Mahlzeit! Church, school, doctors Office. It popularized it as a General greeting. So yes, German can greet everyone every where like that. It's Just not as common as saying it during meal Times. Also i like how in Germany you have to bake cake for your birthday. It means you're getting cake for everyone elses birthday instead of being expected to bring it.

I think ventilation is a must in Germany because, firstly, our houses are extremely well insulated and the windows and doors close really tightly. Secondly, we don't have AC to ensure air exchange. So if you don't ventilate, the oxygen in the house is used up quite quickly. In addition, moisture starts to condense on windows and walls and then mold forms. That's why it's a must in many rental contracts. I personally have to either close the door and open the window to sleep or, if it's very hot or very cold outside, the other way round, close the window and open the door to the rest of the house because otherwise I feel like I'm suffocating in my sleep. That's probably nonsense, but that's the way it is

At home, there is not a problem with "Lüften" for me, but at work it is. I work as portier at a big, old place in Vienna. Everyone wants to open the windows in the seminar rooms - but unless they have a professor with them, they always forget to close the outer windows (there are inner and outer windows). Then comes some rain and a storm and many windows are destroyed. Old windows, very expennsive to replace. It drives me nuts, because it is a part of my job to watch out for this.

Impact air makes especially in winter time sense. You open the windows for about 5-10 minutes and replace the old air with fresh air. And then you close the windows again. This way you loose way less heat in your home as if you open just one window just a bit. But you also have to take in consideration that nearly all homes in Germany are especially isolated and build out of stone and concrete. Modern homes are nearly airtight so they often have(need) an electronic ventilation system. These electronic ventilation systems have also integrated air change and heat recovery systems. The old air is pumped through some kind of radiator to recycle the heat and use it again to heat the house.
@eisikater1584
@eisikater1584 21 күн бұрын
What's more, cold air is dryer than warm air, because there's not much water vapor in it, so by that air exchange in winter, you also reduce moisture and thus prevent mold from growing on your walls. That's especially important in older buildings. I have no experience with these modern homes and all their sophisticated ventilation systems, but I think I wouldn't like one because these sure need regular expensive inspection and maintenance, which a window definitely doesn't.

You can also ventilate in winter because cold air heats up faster than warm air cools down. This is due to the density; cold air has a higher density and can therefore absorb heat more quickly.
@Sgt__Hawk
@Sgt__Hawk 17 күн бұрын
You might want to check that statement. Even if there was a significant difference between the amount of energy needed for heating up vs. the amount of energy freed by cooling down (spoiler: There is not. The specific heat capacity is the same in both directions and the slight difference in mass is negligible) it would work the other way around. Since cold air is more dense and therefore has (insignificantly) more mass per volume, you would need more energy to heat it, than to cool the same volume of air.

1:55 Stosslüften - I'd say, it's related to our climate and the way we're building houses. See... Germany has usually moderate temperatures and rather moist weather. But, there can be times with very cold or hot weather over a couple of weeks in a row. So, all germans aim to have a home as insulated as possible!!! (helps saving money for heating too). In short: our walls, doors and windows, all of our buildings, they just can't breath. These are perfect conditions for getting mold into the buildings. So, if you wanna prevent your home or office from getting very unhealthy in the long term, you have to do something! The easiest way to prevent molding is the unpleasent "Stosslüften". 7:32 Birthday cakes in the office - The roots of it go back to having a birthday party. If you're inviting to a party the usual deal is: you're providing the food (cake), they bring the presents, right? The office is kinda special... Your colleagues see themselves like kinda part time friends(?), so they expect you to invite them and bring a cake. If you, by any chance, happen to work in a true friends envirionment, they WILL bring you a present! But, let's be honest... They are cormorants!!! They just see the opportunity to grab some free cake! ;o) Let's face it: you don't mess with a huge crowd of vultures, do you? Just bring in the cake and hope, they don't eat you alive!!! :o) :o) :o) 8:50 and 11:25 Noise and rules - Germany has arguably the densest population of Europe. So, to have a smooth daily life, you have to stick to the rules. If you're making trouble, you don't just annoy ONE neighbour, you're gonna annoy dozens of them at once. But, it doesn't stop there - having a dense population also means, we have a lot more of troubleshooters to deal with than evrybody else. That's, why we make sure, you'll stick to the rules!!! ;o) I'd say, it isn't a german thing... if you look at verry high populated countries all over the world, you'll see the same. Just grab some examples from south east asia and compare them with us. I'll give you that: You wouldn't need these rules, if you literaly have to grab your phone to yell at the far, far away next neighbour in the first place. 12:30 Bottle opening - See, I'm a german, I don't even use the word opener, I just don't need to! I say opening. :o) Don't make a video trying to open beers without an opener in a lot of different ways. There're already videos of germans that took the challenge before. You just can't win anymore. :-P

At 10:00 they're showing something typical German without even mentioning it: Those glass bowls! Every German household has them. Nobody bought them (ever!), they are just there... I don't even know where to buy them, never seen them in a shop... They are not meant to be bought or sold, those bowls are some kind of cosmic entity. And even if you break them (if that's even possible, I never tryed), they just somehow reappear. If some German would be mad enough to weaponize those bowls, every enemy would get shred by broken glass and we would NEVER run out of ammo. Fortunately we didn't have (or at least didn't use) them "back then". Imagine a Tiger II with a 360mm glass bowl cannon. I tell you: Those bowls...they are everywhere. And they are forever. Take em, smash em, grab a new one, repeat. And mankind will drown in a flood of shards...

Shock ventilation is not carried out throughout the house, but only where there is either high humidity (bathroom) or where there may be a lack of oxygen, i.e. where people spend long periods of time. Shock ventilation should be brief (like a shock) so that the room does not cool down too much.

When it's someone's birthday, there are the following options: 1. Office jobs = The "birthday child" brings cake. Reason: most people rarely invite their colleagues home for a party. 2. Skilled trades: There are two options here: 1. The birthday child buys breakfast for the colleagues, then everyone eats breakfast together. 2. The birthday child brings a case of beer. Most people don't care if there's a colleague there who doesn't drink beer. If you're lucky, you'll be asked if you'd like to drink something else. In many industries, it's also common to do the same when you go on vacation.

The reason for the Lüften is very easy to explain. Our modern Low Energy Houses are so dense, that there is No airflow between inside and Outside. So you have to "Lüften", otherwise the old CO2 high and humidity Air will stay in the House. Humidity in particular can then lead to mold. Therefore many contracts have special parts for the "Lüften". Because mold is one of the biggest problems in the new dense Low Energy Houses. Of cause a britain does not know it. Their Houses are so dense like a barn from early years of 1300.

The crucial thing is that if colleagues bring something to work, it would have to be agreed each time who brings what. This is somewhat problematic from an organisational point of view, depending on the number of colleagues, holiday times, etc. Lists would be constantly circulating and someone would have to keep a constant eye on when the next colleague's birthday is and whether they might have taken holiday on their birthday. And it would (presumably) often be the same people who bring (or don't bring) something. What's more, the same dishes could often be served on birthdays. The German version ensures that it will be something different every time and it is much easier to organise, it can't be forgotten, nobody has to keep lists. It's also more in the spirit of "It's my party day, I'm spending one!"

Mahlzeit is a very blue collar job thing or a thing with crafts and construction.Said to a person who is obviously working in a white collar job it can even be meant as an insult, depending on the area and situation.Generally speaking: The longer you spent at university, the less likely is a Mahlzeit from you or your colleagues.

The funny thing is, Germans know how to fold a piece of paper in order to be able to open a bottle with it. But if you want to experience something truly German, try "Manata Teller"! It's Currywurst Special with fries and onions. It is a sausage seasoned with curry and Katch up and served with fries, onions and mayonnaise. The funny thing is, it was named after the Opel Manat car whose drivers are so stereotypically German that their favorite dish gets a name for a meal.

I guess you mean Opel "Manta" 😂. Theres also a famous movie called Manta Manta. But I never heard Manta Currywurst in my live 😅, might be a northern thing. Haven't seen a real Manta in ages, so they are not that common anymore, because Opel stopped production August 1988. The funniest thing about cliché Manta drivers was the real foxtails they often had as keychain or hanging on the mirror. 😂😂😂😂
@worm5797
@worm5797 17 күн бұрын
@@SoneaT Sorry for the spelling, of course I meant the Opel Manta. The Manta plate or Manta Dish comes from the North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) "Ruhr area". (Ruhrgebiet) The Manta Drivers have of course also shaped the Jokes and Subculture such as the Movies "Manta Manta" or "Manta der Film". But it all still so deep in the Memories of the youth of the 80s, that when you order a Manta plate, you still get a currywurst with fries plus mayo and Katch up. At that time it was quite modern to send signals with a CB radio to play a fox, which the rest of the group would then locate with their CB radios based on the S value of the transmitter signal, this was then called fox hunting. The radio antenna was also a popular place for the foxtail.

@@SoneaT If the waitress is younger than 30, try just "Currywurst with Red and White Fries. All Border Barriers in Germany at that Time were Red and White, so "Pommes Schranke" is known as Fries with Mayonaise and Katch up. If you order "Pommes Schranke Special", chopped Onions are included. Iff you need the Currywurst and Fries +, just call a "Manta Platte Spezial".

All of the airing out never gets realy explained. First you air out the rooms, when it's hot inside, because most of Germans don't have aircon. Second... our houses are isolated ( to stay warm in cold winters and cold in summer, hence no aircon needed) , very good isolated and if you don't want to get mildew, you need to regularly air. But almost nobody does it 4 times a day 😂😂 And to open all of them is pretty dumb, all you need is 2 windows and we don't cool the room down, then it was open to long 😂. If they do it by work, it's to renew the air. I hate rooms where it stinks because of the used up air. We never bring a salad like this to a party 😢😢😮😮😮. Either you make one with mayo yourself (sometimes even the mayo) or other salads, cakes, cookies or other requested sweets. But they are always self made and requested from the inviting person.
