My parosmia right after COVID recovery lasted 2-3 weeks only. I’m sending everyone who’s dealing with this positive and radiant energy🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I remained positive and told my self that my scent was coming back soon and so it did. Don’t drown in negative emotions. I know it can be hard but you can do this ❤️🙏🏼

As a Parosmia sufferer for some 4 years, this is useful, common sense advice, and it should be added that one needs to look after one's well-being as the condition is often spectacularly debilitating and produces serious despair at times! Sadly, I have to dispel the myth - the condition does NOT often improve - especially if it strikes when one is older!! Smell and taste disorders are as disabling as speech and hearing disorders but get NO credence or funding for research in comparative terms - it is as if (as most Doctors don't know or care about it) it isn't "as serious or important" a condition!! One can only 'soldier on' - in the fce of such serious disruption to one's life - as there is no cure, no respite and no hope......at least so far!

Hey Mike, Thank you for commenting and we really appreciate your feedback. As you have mentioned, for many people parosmia does not improve over time. Lina was describing how understanding ways to live with parosmia can improve well-being over time rather than the parosmia improving itself. Apologies for the confusion and that maybe should have been more clear. Kind regards, Dan

Late to this discussion, but I have been dealing with this for about 5-6 years. I have had to just adapt. I try things that were horrendous at first and find that it is tolerable for some things and others are still a no go. For example, I cannot stand the smell of coffee now, but if I stick to a flavored and mild roast and put lots of cream I can drink it. I used to love mint anything, but now the taste is not always pleasant so I steer away in general now. Depends on the day. So I will say it does not get better as in meaning it does not go away, but like anything else in life you adapt when you have to in order to survive. Since mine was way pre- covid and not age related I don't think there is anything that can be done. Doctors in my neck of the woods just dismissed it once they couldn't get rid of it. Good luck to you all and maybe the medical community will figure it out one day.

FINALLY! The actual term for what I have! I've had issues with nearly anything sweet- the taste goes foul in my mouth. In the beginning so foul I could gag (and I did several times). Up to today I've had a couple of days that seemed slightly better, but it also seems like my body is learning to live with it. Water tastes like metal when I drink it out of my Yeti cup, corn dogs were a random one that didn't taste good at all. And it took until watching videos on this tonight and reading comments that I now finally understand why I'm the only one who can smell dog poop smell at times. Or like a whiff of decay smell, which gives me anxiety. Nice to actually find people who can relate, though wouldn't wish this on anyone!

I first got covid over Christmas 2021, complete loss of taste and smell which slowly returned over a few weeks. No issues with Parosmia after round 1. Parosmia started with just onions perhaps 2 months ago where onions were so foul to me I could detect their presence in a room or even residual on a cutting board, if they were in food I could not eat the dish. Now I'm slowly recovering from Covid round 2, and last week I've added coffee, avocado. This week, as im recovering from my bout of covid it has extended to beef and now bourbon. Pretty much everything is tasting like chemicals now, it seems to be getting worse daily. I also swore for months i was smelling gas... I would think it was coming in my car from outside so i wrote off as someone with bad exhaust until reading many others with parosmia have the same problem. I'm praying this will stop.

Never had covid-19 but i got hit so hard by sinusitis in the early Sept 2021. I couldn't taste nor smell anything (which is called as anosmia). After been struggling with it for 2 weeks, my taste and smell got back. And then, life just got turned 180. 2 days ago, either my sense of taste or smell literally changed. Until now, i can't eat nor drink things that i want. And yeah.. struggling again with this new type of sickness. Kinda depressing tho. But i know that i am not alone. Thankfully i've found communities that support people with this issue. Still new at this and trying to blend in with the situation. I hope that we can get better soon.

I started experiencing parosmia on thanksgiving day 2021, about 3 months after an asymptomatic bout of the coof. for reference, I am 49 yo male. i rarely get sick, often going numerous years without any bouts of flu, common cold, and such. I am a smoker. my gf got the full blown version with a 5 day stint in the hospital. we both lost smell and taste. hers returned to normal within a week or two. mine...well, did not. I would like to dig a little deeper, and maybe bring up some things I find so perplexing. this first is, there is no (except for two or three things) reference in memory to the smells and tastes I experience. I lack the language to accurately describe the sensations because, I do not know anything to reference them to. secondly, the sensations are ALL offensive. I think that just being different is, not the issue. the smells and tastes are just awful. next, is the brief interludes (5 seconds max) I get of normalcy. it has not been consistent, nor has frequency increased. however, there have been brief instances of "i know that smell!!!" . i start sniffing like a dang bloodhound, and the mind starts going " could it be gone??!!! ". then as quickly as it came, it leaves and the bad comes right back. lastly, there have been instances of things starting out smelling or tasting ok, and then going bad. a few foods this happened with (further limiting food choices), and some smells too. one smell was a deodorant, that smelled normal for one day. the next, the smell had gone bad. so, this thing is active, and evolving. to be open and honest...at this point, I wish for a safe way to just shut off my sense of taste and smell. I know this line of thinking is not ideal, or necessarily healthy. but, it is where I am at. there are a number of other areas of life (over this last year) that have contributed to where I am mentally. I have been in survival mode since late November last year. I basically strive to mitigate stress where I can. most of the things in life that, I used to derive pleasure from. have either changed, or are not available to me any more. for me, this has been a large part of the struggle. I don't mean to be a downer here. I just don't think there is much value in this moment in putting on the brave face, in this setting. there is only one study of two individuals, thus far. the medical profession is baffled by this thing and have little to nothing to offer. so we, are the study. comments on videos like this, forums and the like contain more information than the few articles out there. trying to find the right words to describe what each of us experiences is wanting at best. I don't know that, there is much value in spending so much time trying to describe it others. I get it we are trying to help others relate and understand. for our benefit and theirs. however, it would seem we all experience this differently. At this time I think the best we can do is just to be as open and honest as we can be. this is afterall, a search for knowledge and understanding. sorry for the tldr, and thank you to anyone who may take the time to read my ramblings. to everyone else suffering from parosmia, I wish for you the best, and I wish it would go away. I would not wish this upon anyone.

So I’ve had it for about 6 weeks and at first cooked meat, garlic, onions, and fried food all tasted odd. I don’t have it as bad as some people because the smell I get is just really odd. Not pleasant but not nauseating. Recently I’ve been noticing I don’t get that smell on certain things like onion and fried foods aren’t as bad. I know you said it changes and can different one day to the next. But the smells don’t come as often for anything. Some things taste different but it isn’t as strong as it once was. Does that mean I’m starting to recover or does it get worse before it gets better??

We eat alot of spaghetti, minus the hamburger! He says hey we save $9 not putting beef in it! But I worry about him not getting enough protein! Christmas, how horrible to have it at Christmas;(

Hello, thanks for sharing. I have parosmia (recovered anosmia) since 2009. It’s been so long that I learned to live with it and adapted to my new tastes over time. Most of the foods I eat don’t bring much of a sensation but I built my own ways for cooking and making things “taste” nice to me. Interestingly, if I can’t imagine how a dish looks like I don’t seem to have much interest in it. It is tricky. However the long term impact of having parosmia has not been on my diet but on behavioral and emotional aspects of my life. Being alerted, worried and anxious. Difficulty focussing and relating to new people. Have you noticed anything similar on that side? thanks

My parosmia just began a few weeks ago I had covid quite badly exactly a year ago and suffered long covid (not as bad as some but pretty hard on my lungs and legs. I lost my appetite some but never lost my sense of smell only things changed at first I used to like bananas even when they start to turn brown or at least spotty and soft but then they began to smell not so nice and I couldn't stand them unless they where just losing the green starting to yellow but now I just gave them up. that was in the beginning a year ago so things smell wise was not so bad but recently I got food poisoning or something else and a week before that I was peeing blood quite heavy with clots for 24 hrs I took antibiotics the night it started from an emergency chemist/pharmacy that stays open late so that cleared up thankfully without needing uritha scope or endo and such the Dr said I looked peaky and I got my bloods checked for kidney or prostate problems but they seemed ok so since the diharea from the food poison that didnt smell like diharea t was something not normal and I still have that oder when I visit or pass wind and its the smell I get when I get near bananas or coffee and other stuff everywhere not just at home

@@charlottebirgittethomsen4273Hi, I haven't thought about it. I hear some people are seeing improvement after 2yrs without treatment. For the first yr my husband cooked outside on the bbq, even in the winter because the smells was terrible. This winter I let him cook inside with the stove fan on high and if it's something too awful I go in my bedroom and close the door until he airs out the house. Febreeze air freshener laundry scent has helped. I can't smell the febreeze but it takes away the bad smells. This winter I tolerate odours better, they're still awful but I guess I'm learning to adapt. Mentally and physically I have good days and bad days. I keep telling myself it could've been worse, that I'm one of the lucky covid long haulers because I was never seriously ill. Also I'm fortunate to have a supportive family that tries to adapt whenever possible. Hang in there, try to stay positive, keep living life the best you can. Try cooking outside, changing cleaning and hygene products. I hope you see improvement soon!

@@charlottebirgittethomsen4273 try eatting things that are white, sounds odd I know. That's how I started eatting and I'm now at 24 items(I can't taste them all and some don't taste like they should but I can tolerate them) and not all are white. It's bland but better than nothing. I started with plain basmatti rice, potatoes, cheese, yogurt, vanilla ice cream, cheese gnocchi, bread with no crust (for some reason, the more things are roasted or fried it makes the smell and taste really bad). Absolutely no spices or sauces😒 Have you tried drinking the Ensure or Boost meal replacement type drinks? That's what my Dr recommended but I don't like the texture and find it too sweet. Another recommendation was a nose clip but I couldn't do that either. Also if I don't eat something for a few days it can change taste usually for the worse. So if you can eat something tried to not go too long before eatting it again. I hope my suggestions can help.🤞
