Speyburn 18 is my favourite. Tastes like a cigar humidor filled with chocolate, nuts and baking spices. Unreal 🥃

Oooo...Stranahan's. Always intriguing. I bought a bottle of their Colorado single malt and loved it. I went back for their Blue Peak and was a mite disappointed. I will return to their Colorado (yellow label), so I could be enticed to try their other offerings. If you like this, watch out for Westland Peated American Single Malt Whiskey out of Seattle. I hear that Freeland Bourbon, out of here in Portland, Oregon, is quite good. I just stumbled across Glenmorangie's Nectar d'Or and was pleasantly surprised with a new whisky experience.

Thanks for the info. Will definitely try and look out for them. Glenmorangie Nectar D'or is a great dram!

I have a bottle of Speyburn 25 yrs old that is absolutely delicious. I really like the JD BiB and quite a steal for $33.

@@MaltActivist Thanks for the video, based on your recommendation I picked up a bottle of the Speyburn 18 for a very reasonable price of $99. I plan to open it in 3 weeks at a party we are hosting

Great video! If you're interested in bold Bourbon flavours I would highly recommend Balcones Brimstone or Stagg Jrif you haven't tried already. I'll think you'll like it 🥃

See if you can get the Longrow Red 11 Tawny Port Cask Matured. It tastes like smoked and salted milk chocolate. Also... I recently bought the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Pittyviach. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one. Love the videos bro.

Thank you Pill Cozby!!! I'll definitely try that.

Wolfburn makes some good honest young whisky. Need to try Speyburn myself. Its one of those whiskies I overlook, when I have tried just about all its neighbours. This year I am going to try and get my hands on a Daftmill. Had a chance of one a couple of years back but having just bought a few whiskies at the time I decided it was one for another time
@MaltActivist Жыл бұрын
Daftmill is on my radar too!

There are 4 grains that are used in various amounts in bourbons: corn, barley, rye, and wheat. Typically a bourbon has 3 of those ingredients, with most of them doing corn/rye/barley. "Wheated Bourbons" use wheat in their mash bill instead of the rye. A "Four Grain" bourbon has all 4. Makers Mark is a good baseline as a wheated bourbon.
@MaltActivist Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rory! I really appreciate that bit of knowledge. I think I'm going to look for a Four Grain bourbon now.

Lots of variability on the larceny barrel proofs. But the last batch from 2022 was fantastic. Not a typical fan of larceny products but woah the barrel proof was special, It was like having a caramel melt on your tongue. With a lot of heat behind it but not overwhelming. And not crazy expensive even when difficult to find. It got back back to exploring my bourbons after switching almost exclusively to scotches for a few months
@MaltActivist Жыл бұрын
That sounds delicious!

Nice picks for the new year. Wheated bourbons use wheat as the secondary grain in the mash versus rye. As for Speyburn, I've begun my Speyburn journey with a couple local store picks. Great so far.

JD Bonded is an average bottle at best. If you can find, try John J Bowman - Single Barrel instead. One of the best Bourbons I have ever tested.

Excellent! Will look out for that.

Just so you aren’t too disappointed: Jack Daniels Bonded is just okay. If you can get the Single Barrel Barrel proof..

JD bonded has paid from some awards... not clear that it has won any. It is a fine, middle of the road bourbon/Ten. Whiskey.

@@MaltActivist yup. It’s sitting on my shelf right now. I think the barrel proof and barrel select are better. Although I have yet to try the JD triple mash that came out along side the bonded one.

The only knock on wheated bourbon, in my opinion, is the lack of spice. They can come across as fairly mundane UNLESS it has two things: Barrel strength (adding much needed oomph) or extreme age (10 years plus) to add more underlying oak flavors. The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection William Larue Weller has both attributes. And is amazing. But hard to find here in the US, I can imagine even worse in your neck of the woods.
@MaltActivist Жыл бұрын
I have a few bottles of the BTAC WLW in my bar thankfully. Yeah very hard to come by in my neck of the woods.

The thing that I took away from this is that it's eclectic and waaay into the weeds of whiskydom. Well known distilleries, sure. But not well promoted or known, or just limited bottlings.

Bro, I LOVE Redbreast and, obviously, could not resist buying the Kentucky Oak edition, especially after how good the PX edition was. Don't waste your time and money, it's bad. Tastes like a freshly cut tree. It's BAD.
