*Please read* !! The video omits a key step -- before you begin anything, TURN OFF THE WATER to your house/apartment first, and drain the faucets before proceeding! This may be obvious for those who are not beginners, but anyone can potentially forget. I've heard stories of people who created geysers of water and experienced geysers of embarrassment after forgetting to do this! Another tip before you begin is to cover your drain -- you are dealing with small objects that can slip away forever and bring your work to a screeching halt! If this comment helps even one person, it will be so worth it!

Thank you! This was exactly my question - don't you need to shut off the water to do this?
@cemnei4 жыл бұрын
Spot on! Only thing I would add is to take note of the position of the cartridge when you pull it out from the base. I didn't. When I reinstalled, I had it flipped 180 degrees, resulting in the water being hot first and then cold when turned on. I had to take it all apart and flip it for the hot to be all the way to the left again. No big deal, as this was perhaps the easiest, cheapest home repair I have EVER done! So thankful to have found this video!!
@gregsimpson6216 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent video for various reasons. First, you said buy local. That's so true as my folks owned a department store for 25 years. My Dad kept it open 5 years longer than his CPA accountant recommended and lost money each of those last 5 years. But he kept it open as a community service for the small town/community I grew up in. Secondly, if you go to a local store, you can tell them the problem and they quite often can tell you the solution. I had to repair a dryer 2 times and both times he told me what I needed and how to do it. First time he had the part on inventory and second time he ordered the part for me. Even if it costs slightly more, you still save money versus having a professional make a house call which typically runs you $100 just to walk in the door. Thirdly, I'm working, as we speak, on an older Peerless shower/tub handle which is similar to your Delta and made by Delta. I saw that cartridge at Lowe's too for almost $40! That blew me away because right beside it was a complete replacement for this Delta which also includes 2 handles, 1 like yours & 1 round one so you can choose either type that matches your current bathroom setup, along with face plate, cartridge, seals, etc. And it comes in the finish you have or chrome for $39.97! So one could replace everything for the same price as 1 cartridge! It too was made by Danco. Finally, this is the second day I've been working on. It's older and uses a "ball stem" setup, which goes up and down. According to Delta, one is suppose to remove the white adjustment piece in front before unscrewing a similar piece like you did right at first. But it won't budge. There are 2 types of ball stem replacement parts but I don't know which one it is. So I bought a Danco "repair kit for Delta & Peerless", item #88103, which I believe is designed more for regular faucets but it has that little silver wrench I need to hopefully untighten the white ring. I believe it's the temperature regulator. The ball stem may be okay; who knows. It does have various seals along with 2 springs and 2 little seals like you used so I may luck out. I don't think the ball stem types even have a cartridge but have read they are connected to 3 brass pipes. So one has to be careful not to break the pipes, creating a huge behind the wall repair! Ironically, they say not to use a pipe wrench as it could break those pipes. And the wrench you used I just happened to see also and wish now I had purchased it. Oh; my Danco at Lowe's (9:30 at night) cost me $7.96 while the Delta brand wanted $19.99! I might also mention that little leak doesn't look like much. But I've used both a 1 gallon and 5 gallon bucket to collect the water while using a main drain opener which recommends not using any water for 24 hours for it to work. Well, I was collecting 1 gallon of water every 20 minutes! Didn't think it would be so much. That's 3 gallons of water every hour, times 24 = 72 gallons a day! Times 30 = 2,160 gallons a month!!!! That increases my water bill by 35%....35% more water usage charge, 35% more sewer usage charge, and 35% more taxes/fees so it's costing one more than they might realize, month after month, year after year. Sorry so long but thanks for an informative video. Hopefully my comments can also assist someone.

Never had any trouble from Delta sending me a free cartridge ... took about a week but didn't pay a dime. Also sometimes just taking the handle off and putting a flyers inside the plastic stopper and turning to the right will close it off and stop leaking. You can turn the handle to off BUT if it's not centered, you might thing its off when it still needs to be seated to the right more. Saves you from taking everything off. This is especially true after putting in a new set and it still leaks.
@TXSuburbanHomestead Жыл бұрын
I have had lots of trouble with Delta. You have to buy the cartridge at an approved store. I found this out when I purchased from Amazon. I had the receipt and a photo of the original part in the packaging with the receipt and they wouldn't honor their warranty because of where I purchased it.

Well done. Unfortunately, the springs and seats didn't do the job for us. We had to get a whole new cartridge to stop the drips. Instead of waiting for the seats and springs being sent by Delta, we picked up a Danco kit at Lowe's. After installing them, the shower still dripped, although not as badly. Delta claims their brand-name seats and springs would have worked, but there's no way we are going to remove the new cartridge and put in the old one to find out. Delta fought reimbursing us for the cartridge (the shower is only 11 months old), but it looks like they might after all.

Hey guys, I have the same Delta cartridge (Blue/White). I tried putting new Danco seats & springs in. Still leaks. I am waiting on a new cartridge to arrive in the mail. I only hand tightened the bonnet cap, as I have seen several warnings not to over tighten the bonnet with a wrench, although it seems tightening the bonnet more would make for a tighter seal on the new seats, which is how the new springs/seats stop the leak. If the new cartridge does not stop the dripping, I'll try tightening the bonnet with a wrench, and see what happens, and post it here...

Don't overlook the fact your water pressure regulator for your house may be defective and causing higher than normal pressure. When a second faucet in the house started to leak, I bought a water pressure gauge and checked the pressure at a outdoor hose valve. It was 90 psi. it should be 50 psi. I replaced the pressure regulator returning the pressure to 50 psi and the leak stopped.

Thanks for this video. I’m having this leaking problem just a few weeks ago. And I said to myself, this is a waste of water. We just had our bathroom renovated last February 2020. Instead of me fixing myself this leak, I just texted the contractor who did it and also told them that once you turn the water it runs hot water without going all the way to the left. I thought they did this in purpose so that way the water is hot right away 😁....then I read some comments and found out that it is possible they installed it incorrectly. I also thought it’s a good thing and convenient to have hot water right away 😂. Thank you again for this video.

Thank you for posting this! I've swapped a lot of those cartridges out, and now I learned I may not have to go that far! The challenge I run into most often is removing the handle without snapping the brass stem off. Would that silicone grease help keep it from binding, or is it not recommended to use it there? Also, that's probably the happiest background music I've heard in a DIY video.

Hard water here and have already stripped the set screw trying to remove to get at the cartridge. I'm going to fix it this time around. Hoping I can avoid breaking the cartridge where it meets the handle, so I can just replace springs/seats. Great video. Heads up though for people who think this will be this simple...my cartridge got stuck and broke off. It had to be drilled out and ripped out in pieces. There is a tool that can be used to lock into that cartridge to assist in pulling it out. May be easier than what was done on my end. If you're familiar with projects like this, i guess none of that would be a surprise. If this is the first time you attempted something like this, be prepared it may not be as simple as it looks.

For a stripped screw, I'd recommend calling a plumber. The fix isn't simple and takes some tools/skill.

Thanks for the video. I did this but it didn’t fix the faucet. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest replacing the whole cartridge next. It may be that there is something clogging it not letting the seals close. The last thing I would suggest before you call an actual plumber is the most the most dramatic. I had a home builder friend of mine no mine tell me to take everything out open the valve and let water just blow out for a minute or 2. He said sometimes if you have an older home with older pipes there there are things in the pipe that clog the cartridge. I have to do that in my house about once every 6 to 8 months.

How would you get the handle to be unstuck? After I took the screw off. Handle doesn’t wanna come off
@TXSuburbanHomestead6 жыл бұрын
You have to be very careful because the cartridge is 2 pieces and if you force it off, it'll snap at the juncture. I always have to wiggle mine in multiple directions to loosen it up before I pull straight off.

Wiggle gently as you pull out straight. Sometimes it will take a lot of pulling. Maybe take the set screw all the way out to make sure it's out of the way (cover the drain as it will fall in if dropped).

Maybe a little bit of that plumbers grease on the part of the handle that inserts into the cartridge so not so tough to take off next time? Same goes for the set screw. Mine is now stripped and I'll likely have to drill it out and/or break the cartridge to get the handle off. Bad design, especially for hard water systems where it gets calcified/corroded.

Do I have to turn off the whole supply to do this job? Thanks
@TXSuburbanHomestead Жыл бұрын
You need to turn off the water somewhere. It may be that your house has a valve on your shower supply. Mine didn't, so I had to turn it off at the street. Hope this helps.

Do I need to shut water off before doing this repair? Thanks!
@TXSuburbanHomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes, most definitely. I don't know what your setup is like, but I had to turn my water off at the main down by the street. You may have it that you can turn it off at a valve in your bathroom somewhere

Thanks for your great video. How do you find the model number for the faucet? I've been leaving in my cookie cutter home for the past 17 years now and I have no idea how to find the part number.
@TXSuburbanHomestead6 жыл бұрын
First off, thanks for watching & I'm glad it was of some help. On the model number, good luck... There really isn't much of a way to find it on the actual faucet itself, but Delta has a pretty good online tool that can help you narrow it down. It's the link below. However, I found that if I just took mine apart & took it to a local plumbing supply store, the were able to help me even without the model number. www.deltafaucet.com/service-parts
